Teach and Learn

TLS 365 Experience #121
June 29, 2017

I wonder how many stop to consider the many experiences and ways they have shared and educated with the labyrinth. It is a moment of appreciation for all we actually have learned by what we share.

Aside from personal development I continually appreciate the many ways the  labyrinth becomes teacher. I have coached others with the labyrinth in group and individual session and experience. There are great meaningful messages in our walk and our talk that ease individuals into new perspectives and a sense of appreciation for each to realize their own discoveries. It is like a path of permission where we both teach and learn.

Creating a Foot Bit

TLS 365 Experience #120
June 28, 2017

A Foot Bit Labyrinth Step DeviceI do not have a Fit Bit device. I am not tracking my steps and while it helps many to create a helpful fitness routine, a woman on the labyrinth who kept looking at hers,  made me think of another way to use it for a mindful experience.

When I have designed labyrinths in the past, I want to know for my own description, how many steps there might be in its design.  Just an interesting piece of trivia that I have enjoyed knowing in all the designs I have created. To figure this out I have had to take many trips to finally arrive at the number; as when I walked I tended to fall into the relaxed mind and lost my track in counting. It was amusing to see how many times I might have to walk the labyrinth to figure out its step count. It created a new awareness of my own ability and an appreciation for a new idea for mindfulness awareness.

I used a reverse process of counting to move into the meditative quality. By asking how many steps I might take before I lose count, I worked towards the message of the labyrinth instead of against it. When I used this technique more in my labyrinth walk,  I find it takes less steps before I drop into the experience than before, so it’s become my own “foot-bit” of mindful fitness.

Walking With Mom

TLS 365 Experience #119
June 27, 2017

I like the idea of a birthday labyrinth. Today is my Mom’s birthday and so I walked with her in mind. She has a walker and getting around these days is hard for her so I brought her to the labyrinth and there was a seat with a finger labyrinth attached to a stand that she could walk.

We had a talk before I walked and as she proceeded to finger walk the labyrinth, I walked the structured design. I thought of my wishes for her well being and some of the things that would be a blessing for her and walked with those in mind. She finished the finger labyrinth before I did and when we sat on the bench quietly, she leaned over, put her hand on mine and said I wished for your well being and all the things that would be a blessing for you.

Slowing Down

TLS 365 Experience #118
June 26, 2017

The labyrinth is where I learn all about how to slow down and appreciate. I keep finding myself hurried and busy and it seems to really be increasing as there is so much busy and hurry in the activity around me.  It often feels like a feeding frenzy of unnecessary activity.

I am happy to have a place to go that lets me take the slow meander and relax as I move. On the labyrinth I walk intentionally slower, though am seeming to move so fast; until my mind catches up with the pace my body is moving. Instead of my mind telling my body how to react, I reverse the process and now just taking a walk has a whole new meaning.

Where Does It Go?

TLS 365 Experience #117
June 25, 2017

I’ve learned to say thank you before and after my walk, and I have to think so many do this as well, as the gifts that come in the occupation are a blessing. I say thanks as well as I have to wonder where all that is left behind from a walk goes? People walk and release and what they each hold and let go becomes part of the labyrinth, maybe even for the next individual or group to experience.

With all those personal experiences filling the labyrinth, that is a lot to hold and quite a vessel to absorb. Maybe it’s like a black hole, fixed in time and space adding layers of experiences. Not so very unlike humans in this circle of giving and receiving it seems.

A Trip of Self Education

TLS 365 Experience #116
June 24, 2017

I educate myself with the labyrinth every time I use it. Whether I am walking on a designed path, drawing it out, using the finger labyrinth or doodling designs, I learn something.

It can be just the changing of direction that makes me stop and think. It can be in reaching a final point only to realize the destination is in returning to the next beginning. It can also be from the whole experience of it.

I see myself in a whole new way after a trip through the labyrinth.

Labyrinth in Chalk

TLS 365 Experience #115
June 23, 2017

I think of the labyrinth as my chalkboard.

Labyrinth in ChalkBefore my students arrived for the day, I would draw a design in the corner of the chalkboard and periodically during the day I might need to stop and review; so that I might be more present for my students. I would sit back and let my eyes do the walking, follow the path and just in that few moments, I found myself transported.

I used to come in and draw it in the center of the board and finger walk the outline of my day or set up intentions for it. Though I discovered it useful when I put it in the corner with the daily assignments and notes. I later alerted my inquiring students as to what it was so they could take a moment when they needed and do the same. Now it is just a fixture and expected part  of our day.

With a switch to whiteboards, I find the white chalk appeared to have more depth and easier eye flow on the black board.

The Labyrinth Zone

TLS 365 Experience #114
June 22, 2017

The Labyrinth appears to be a tool of at least four dimensions. As we can measure the length, width and where it is not a flat, like in the outdoors, there is often some depth to the experience.

As we walk there is also a sense of energetic movement where the stillness of the labyrinth is interrupted by our movement and we stir up the depth of the labyrinth. I wonder if we measured the energy impact in walking from underneath the impact, what it might read.

When we factor in the element of time from our beginning to end and the liminal space in-between that time, we find our fourth dimension. It is here in this fourth dimension that the magic, meaning and moments of consideration seem to move time differently.

We might actually call this dimension, the Labyrinth Zone.

A Simple Check In

TLS 365 Experience #113
June 21, 2017

I used to walk the labyrinth daily, I did this for years and wasn’t at all sure of why I made a daily commitment of it.  Yet, something about taking a walk somewhere in my day gave me a  reference point for being present to what I was to experience or what I had experienced. Before I went to sleep, I would journal a bit and the experience of the labyrinth always seemed to find its way into the writing, explaining or narrating my day as if had been part of the design.

I am not sure why I stopped walking daily, though know it was a different time when I did. I realized in my regular walking,  I wasn’t able to go to sleep or feel complete in my day until I had a recap of it by walking the labyrinth. It was never an obligation, just something I looked forward to.

Now, I am not so frequent, though do realize that there are times when I just want to regroup and I find myself stopping in the midst of the day to trace a finger labyrinth in the air. Short and sweet it does the job of giving me a moment to check in.

Barefoot Bliss

TLS 365 Experience #112
June 20, 2017

This is the official 1st day of Summer so I walked the labyrinth in my altogether natural state… barefoot. Love to go barefoot, yet our Midwest weather does not always oblige. That is what makes this first day special. The shoes are off and the walk is profoundly satisfying. Each step is truly kissing the Earth in great thanks for warming and accommodating.
