The Quiet

TLS 365 Experience #153
July 31, 2017

The quietness of a labyrinth in CaliforniaToday is a quiet day and as I reach for the labyrinth, it becomes a still and quiet walk. I find when I am in this kind of quiet, everything seems slower and more profound. Whether I finger walk or utilize full body, the movements I make are very purposeful as if I can feel the tense and release of muscles. noticing how  each is applied in the momentum. My awareness becomes very exact as the quiet is applied like a blanket, and rolls out in a complete way to encompass the entire body.

The quiet is internal and isolates the outside world from the experience. Each motion is observed for what it is, without any descriptive thought or plan from the mind. It is in these moments of the walk that the action of the leg striding to make its next step is complete with the natural force of the foot bearing weight onto the pathway. In the finger walk it is the extension of the arm and the texture felt under the finger as it reaches its destination along patterns and grooves.

To apply a deep quiet creates an expansion of awareness and greater appreciation of each chosen action.

Adjustments

TLS 365 Experience #153
July 30, 2017

Experimenting with groups, I asked one who were walking the labyrinth with me on this day to really take notice of the way they walked in the labyrinth and to be keenly aware of the labyrinth, their body movement and the way they took steps inward and outward. Then we walked again and I asked each to walk differently than the last person had, to adjust or change in a natural way the way they stepped in the labyrinth.

The conversation after the walk was rich. It made them more aware at first of the way they moved in life and where many held tension, it was released and noticed. Their was a greater appreciation in just becoming mindful in the first walk. In the second it became inventive and many found that they improved their walk by adjusting their posture and noting their bodies. Others found that they extended themselves in a way that was uncomfortable and adjusted throughout and others thought it playful.

Of the many epiphanies that were shared, the ones that were most moved realized how much they move themselves and their minds to adjust to please others. It became a metaphor of how we walk in life.

Artistic Applications

TLS 365 Experience #151
July 29, 2017

Our class was experimenting with creating molding clay from a recipe. We were sampling and experimenting working with different types and I liked the recipe that had the consistency of Play doh. Because I like to make labyrinths, I rolled out a few long threads and created some simple designs with the threads of the clay-doh.

It was also interesting just to create a meander with finely rolled strips of the clay-doh by piecing them together and then letting the meander take us away. Later I experimented with imprints and could make a variety of different items from jewelry to paper weights and small finger labyrinths.

I also rolled out some of the clay-doh and traced a labyrinth on top and then cut out the borders for a frame to quickly draw a labyrinth. I am still experimenting with my clay-doh labyrinths, and suspect there are many more ways to create with clay.

Adventure

TLS 365 Experience #150
July 28, 2017

Today I am headed on a road trip.

I often drive and sometimes across the country. One of the things I like to do is find where the labyrinths are along the way. Sometimes I divert a little farther than I plan, though it is always interesting to meet new labyrinths along the way. They have a story to tell that is unique to the purpose it was built for.

I think of it as a journey and an exploration that is a trip within a trip and where I can plot out its destination on a map, once on the labyrinth… I never know where it can take me.

Common Sense

TLS 365 Experience #149
July 27, 2017

The ladies and I decided to enjoy the labyrinth after our tea service and as there was a delightful garden experience where one could meditate or meander to be reminded of the outdoors. We each walked independently feeling a warmth of the sun and a peaceful serenity as I noted each became quiet as if listening intently.

I noticed after the first turn a deepening aroma of roses that had such a wonderful effect. It seemed to lighten my mood and as I walked on, I found myself breathing different to catch that essence of rose as I walked.  As we each completed our walk, everyone felt more at ease and more mindful of breath. Each had remarked taking in the scent of floral, though what was truly interesting was that some smelled the Jasmine, another smelled the Gardenias and another appreciated the lilies.

While we all walked the same path, we each encountered a different aroma that was prevalent. What was different was the aroma and what was common was the scent, the deeper breath and the walk. It seemed a larger message for all of us, though we might take in things differently, we find we have more that we experience the same.

Growing Gratitude

TLS 365 Experience #148
July 26, 2017

I think of the labyrinth as my exercise in gratitude. Fortunate to have discovered a feeling of grace in holding a place of gratitude in my heart, the human in me forgets from time to time, though it only takes simple reminders to refill again.

As I come to the labyrinth the feeling is always remembered as the first time I walked the path, something opened and what it brought forth was gratitude. It is with each walk that the feeling returns again, filling me as I come to the place of beginning. Though when I arrive at the ending, the gratitude has deepened. I wonder that it can grow, and yet it seems to constantly expand and be limitless.

My walk on the labyrinth seems to be that way too, endless, limitless and tireless. I can always find something new in each walk and always leave with something old, remembered gratitude.

A Natural Playground

TLS 365 Experience #147
July 25, 2017

children on the labyrinthThe labyrinth is a playground.

So many take its design and purpose very intently, sacredly and seriously and while each has its purpose and place, what seems forgotten is how versatile the labyrinth can be. I like that it doesn’t have to be one way or one thing, it can be many things to many people.

I use it with young children in a care giving situation. There is a labyrinth in the park nearby and when we use the park for outdoor activities, the labyrinth often becomes a place to play. Sometimes there are dancing and movement activities, at other times we use its maze like quality to race, run and unwind. We play games on the labyrinth as it is a natural place for adventure. We play and pray together.

Through we also create much in collaboration, taking turns, inclusion, communication and creativity is explored so it also becomes a tool of learning. When we leave it up to kids, the labyrinth is a just a natural tool for discovery.

Realizing Goals

TLS 365 Experience #146
July 24, 2017

Begin and achieve Goals on the LabyrinthI used the labyrinth as a concept for Goal Planning. To me each part of a goal is a step that takes us closer to a dream and as the very act of walking the labyrinth is goal oriented in moving toward the center.  I discovered however that once we have found the center, it isn’t always the complete goal. I found the steps in reflection, considerations, and perspective are equally important to the wholeness of any goal.

At first I saw the labyrinth serving as a path to an objective, then a calendar, then a time line and then check points. Then I began to see it as markers for accomplishment and necessary points of question before moving on.

Walking the goal daily on the labyrinth, kept my intention focused, alive and directed in a very full bodied way. Each day the reflection served to make known the places for adjustment and acknowledgement that came more apparent in each walk.

This was a very whole and complete way to appreciate a goal as it incorporated many aspects, all moving my intention.  Unexpected realizations came in what I walked away with each day. Where the center of the labyrinth is often called the Goal, the truth is that the whole aspect of the labyrinth is the goal.

A Decision for Indecision

TLS 365 Experience #145
July 23, 2017

It was a day of indecision where chaos lay claim. After too many coincidental experiences of inefficiency, I surrendered to the whirlwind style of the day and what it held. Where my thoughts wanted to sort it all out on the labyrinth later on, every step became a beleagured indenture.

I found it wise to stop and become still as the currents of  the day continued to carry on and in that moment I surrendered my thoughts, I surrendered any need to understand and I just began walking in the way I wanted to.

Without the cacophony, natural function and order returned, the day disappeared along with any need to know or figure it out. The only decision that worked for me in this day of indecision was to stop being a part of it, and in this my steps will always take me in the direction I want to go.

Showing Up

TLS 365 Experience #144
July 22, 2017

I recently shared the labyrinth with a family of friends I had been visiting. There happen to be one in the nearby park so we walked over and it was a first for all. They knew of it, though had not thought it more than an ornamental part of the gardens. I shared a little about it in the questions they had before we left and let them find their own way as we came to it. As I had led groups in sharing information and walks in the past, I had not realized how the personalities of people show up in their walk as clearly as I could see it with this family. The difference I realized was in how I knew this family.

As each took to their walk respectively, I could see the contemplativeness of one and the watchfulness of another. Where one had shared an indecision, the walk appeared to note the tension and release that came. Where youth were added the swirling energy of the youngest was an amusing perspective of difference and the headphoned, head down, approach of the teenager who appeared to slap the ground with his steps spoke volumes of his autonomous steps in taking ownership of his position in the world. While it was marvelous to see the personalities come alive in the walk, it is also a privacy to respect and a great insight into how we all show up in the world as we walk. Knowing this has given me a greater awareness and appreciation for the gifts of this application.
