Fitting In

TLS 365 Experience #214
September 30, 2017

In a hurry and having much to do, I wanted to fit in a walk in the morning. What I learned is that a walk is not fit in, it is not just another thing to do because it is on my list. All the hurry faded away and things just made sense with ample time to do all I wished. I realized after reaching the middle that I was reaching my limit and my inner wisdom spoke in remembering the labyrinth when all seemed to be over whelming.  This middle point in my being knew I was walking other peoples hurry and not necessarily my own and wisely brought up the idea of the labyrinth. The calm and gentle feeling after the walk gave me a good reminder, that walking other’s schedules made me not fit in to my own.

Flip Flop Labyrinth

TLS 365 Experience #213
September 29, 2017

A three circuit labyrinth made of flip flopsA random day to close out the summer with a group of teenagers doing what they like to do best, play! This is a replica of a quick and easy flip flop labyrinth. We walked with the idea of what summer has brought. Simple and effective teaching moments of lessons learned by those who walked and lived the summer in sandals.

Walk of Breath

TLS 365 Experience #211
September 27, 2017

Walk of Breath

Our class has been exploring different types of meditation including the labyrinth.
incorporated deeper breathing along with the walking of the labyrinth by using a suggestion from a workshop facilitator.

We began an inhale as we walked into the labyrinth and at the first turn expressed a slow exhale, learning to walk peacefully with the exhalation. At the next turn we inhaled more and soon found the belly extending naturally, the sides expanding and the rise of oxygen into the clavicular area for a fuller expansion of breath. The slow exhale at each turn truly aided us in finding a calm and peaceful reserve.

It was appreciated by all and a way to honestly find step into each facet of our breathing.

Keep Walking

TLS 365 Experience #208
September 24, 2017

I walk the labyrinth for many reasons: to release the stresses of the day, to work out knotty problems, to gain insights and ideas, to relax, to share in community, to heal my heart when it is broken.

The most powerful times seem to happen when I am lost, when I feel that somehow I have lost my way or can’t find my “next step.” The labyrinth reminds me that we can’t always see very far ahead, but that is fine because we are always on the path. It tells me that sometimes we have to backtrack, that inspiration is always available, and that I can find my way.

I just have to keep walking. It reminds me that I have to listen to my heart, that it always knows. In the center, I get inspiration and new paths to explore. When I walk out, it is a new journey.

What Patience Provides

TLS 365 Experience #205
September 23, 2017

The Labyrinth at LYU in IndiaThe ground floor of the temporary university in India was not the place to add a labyrinth, though I am conscious of the grounding principles of design. The ground floor harmonized with Indian philosophies of nature and being close to our roots in what we were learning. The only place to add a labyrinth that was open and available was on the roof.

With my Indian helpers I chalked out the design and when I asked for blue paint to implement it, they brought me green. I added a thin green border around the edge and ran out of paint, so they brought me more. It was blue. Working with what I had, it seemed the elements of Earth were showing up as I had the blue of the seas, the green of nature and on the roof it became the one place to touch the sky that everyone loved.

I had wanted to fill it in with artwork, though ran out of time and what I have heard since my return to the US was that classes that followed me added their own inscriptions and art to the design. Like any good education, the seeds are planted for students to take root…and so they have. The lesson of what patience provides has been a delight to learn.

A Window in the Clouds

TLS 365 Experience #206
September 22, 2017

finger tracing the labyrinth in the clouds.Traveling today was tiring with many delays and reschedules. On the last flight I looked out the window wishing I was aready home and watched as the clouds passed by to occupy time. Each had a different shape and structure and in watching the scenery,  my finger began tracing their shape on the window.  The pattern became that of the labyrinth as moving my finger to follow the different shades of white.

The first I realized was the classical design from a half round shaped cloud. Then a repeating Roman design in the box like cloud that appeared.  A meander followed that from the ribbons that appeared as we moved.  Finally a medieval path in a particularly complex cloud structure. Noting some clouds were fleeting, while others larger and more encompassing,  created awareness for the smaller and quick designs that can be rapidly designed,  as well as the larger that allowed for a little more adventure and time.

It appeared that every cloud might suit a different design of the labyrinth well and it became a sort of game to see how many different designs I could remember and accurately trace on the window. I am sure the cleanup crew must have wondered, though the simple tracing gave my mind something to do that was both exercising the ability to repeat all the designs from memory and activated new and creative ideas for other designs.

I Remembered

TLS 365 Experience #205
September 21, 2017

Wondering how I would be able to spend another day through the yelling and fighting that was going on around me at a relative’s house, I reached for the finger labyrinth a dear friend had made me. I had it tucked out of sight in my suitcase because I really did not want to explain it to those who really seemed not to understand anything but their own world.

As I traced the path with my finger I felt a sense of calm come over me as I remembered my own reserve and stepped away from my conditioned response with family. I had come to help complete family matters after a death and so everything was more heightened and familial habits seemed to be the status quo when entering.

Somehow in entering the labyrinth a return to what I have learned and know more fully about myself took back what had unseated and surprisingly unnerved me in returning to familiar roots. Walking the paths, breathing and moving into my own world returned me to my natural state and not the normal one I entered. After the walk, I was able to step into the family and truly place my footprint among them as the individual that I am.  I remembered.
