Day 8: January 8
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Awareness
In The Month of: Definition
A whole new perspective was appreciated today in the walk of a labyrinth I have not visited in about a year. Being an unusually warm day, the park that is usually vacant was an eye opener to realize either a new use as a place for the homeless or one I had not known before. There were only about 20 individuals and some were clustered in groups, though each found a welcome refuge in the park. As I walked the labyrinth a few discoursed political and conspiratorial without concern of my presence, which served to remind me that I had ventured into their territory. Their plight couldn’t help become part of my walk and as I noted how the park had been updated and somewhat cared for since my last visit, it seemed only natural for those seeking a haven to perhaps feel the extra care as well.
There is an overly large center in the middle of the labyrinth, where a singular tree branches out as an expanse of shelter and coverage where in the intensity of the summer heat, it might provide some needed relief. Thoughts of this relief occurred as I arrived at the center of my walk and as I meandered around the large open space, I noticed a car that had been sitting for some time parked next to mine. A woman and man emerged with bags and set up a line of these that stretched about 20 feet and contained clothing, shoes, totes and items for warmth. Slowly the park’s population took notice and migrated over to investigate and procure what might satisfy a need. I suddenly realized I had bags of collected coats to donate in the trunk of my car that I might have driven away with and not remembered until later. An honest and grateful moment awakened me as to good intentions that were not yet carried out.
As my walk completed and I met the couple, the discovery of their project of community care fit the criteria for another project I had been involved with that made a great collaboration. When I looked back at the labyrinth, my walk must have sparked curiosity as there were now park occupants walking. It began as a simple walk and became a day of greater appreciation for the homeless community, personal realizations and new connections.

What do we do with our honest discoveries on the labyrinth?
TLS 365 Experience 2018: The Year of Living Honestly
Whether it’s a daily walk, teaching others, sharing an experience, expressions of art, building or design, we explore the questions of what brings us to honesty in our use of the labyrinth.
In a world of emerging truth, the labyrinth is a great experience to discover more of what is right and true about ourselves and humanity. Join us in sharing the honest moments it reveals.
