In The Quarter of: Education
In The Month of: Exploration

As we complete the month of our explorations in June we find ourselves in the country of Austria at the Sharing Heritage Exhibition in Schwarzenbergplatz that has operated from April through June of 2018. The European Cultural Heritage Year is celebrating the labyrinths of Europe. The main outdoor exhibit features over 400 different ornamental plants and trees in the circular shape of the labyrinth spread out in circumference to just under a quarter of a mile wide.  In its center a Nut sculpture reminds us of what grows with the seed effect and surrounding it are images of 40 European labyrinths featured from mosaic to contemporary designs and artwork.

It is auspicious and synchronous timing to be completing our sharing journeys on the same day with a focus on Austria as a central point. When we examine the labyrinth structure developed in our journey of the month we have moved from Portland, Oregon to the south of Africa and Australia into China and the Lapland’s. Bringing our central focus to the sharing of Austria feels like a complete way to close the month and the first part of our world labyrinth exploration. It also lends itself to complete the experience with a return walk in July.

On a side note, these explorations have been a daily adventure so it wasn’t until a few days ago that any research pointed the way to Austria and the connection of being connecting to the labyrinth by cultural appreciation. It may well show that we are walking a similar path and when we begin to explore, we begin to discover the evidence of those similarities more readily. Look for our return walk of the world in July…

On this 181st day…
Review your discoveries of this month of exploration and with what you may have discovered of the world, what did you discover of yourself?

Interactive Map Progress
A great Interactive experience this month will include a google map to track where we have been and what labyrinths you submit. The Reflection from Within

Day 180:  June 29
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Education
In The Month of: Exploration

The Sunwheel Labyrinth in Innsbruck, Austria by Gernard Candolini

The Sunwheel Labyrinth in Innusbruck, Austria. Credits: Gernot Candolini

This classical design has a reflective piece in the center amidst the bright yellow flowers. The orange flowers on the edge reflect a natural radiance of the sun’s edges and this peaceful structure sits in a park in Innsbruck, Austria. Gernot Candolini shares his fascination with the labyrinth in design and form having created numerous labyrinth designs and published several books. He is a symbol for exploration as when he learned the differences between maze and labyrinth, he began his own journey of sharing the designs in his homeland of Austria, and in the world beyond.

In our journey of exploration, it is Gernot’s story that many can relate to in finding a connection and pursuing it to learn more. Those who share, learn the most. As it is when we put ourselves “out there” that we take a risk in exploring the world outside allowing what is inside to travel and grow. As we begin to close our month, it is a time of reflection to consider the ways in which the explorations of the external world have impacted the internal and vice versa.

On this 180th day…
Explore the way you become more in your walk of this day. Celebrate the ways you can or do share yourself with the world.

Expand to Understand

Day 179:  June 28
In The Year of Living Honestly

In The Month of: Exploration

The labyrinth hedge design in the shape of a hand with a heart at the center of the palm in Austria

In the land of glittering things we are invited to the garden of Swarovski Crystals of Austria. Where a mirror pool glistens illuminated by a series of crystal clouds that add musical orientation to the experience. There are displays of art, expression and statement in the larger than life sized representation that inhabit this garden of expansiveness. Situated near the sculpted children’s play area is the design by André Heller of a labyrinth of great size in hedge foliage that depicts the hand. At its center is a heart that one spirals into in the walk.

The gardens are full of artistic statements and sometimes when we want to get a point across, the best thing to do is to exaggerate to inspire action.  This labyrinth design gives us great entertainment as well and opens a broader perspective of what we hold in the palm of our hand and how we might hold it.

Note: The original schematic of this design indicated a labyrinth heart at its center, though this design, while quite interesting is more maze than labyrinth even though Austria calls it a labyrinth.

On this 179th day…
Explore what you hold in the palm of your hand and how you hold it today in your walk.

Celebrating the Feminine in the Creations of Croatia

Day 178:  June 27
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Education
In The Month of: Exploration

The creation of a stone labyrinth in the forest of Croatia in the unique formation of the holy trinity

The Holy Trinity Labyrinth Creation in the Tramontana Forest of Croatia. Photo Credits: Careassktart

Honoring Vesna, the Slavic Goddess of Spring, and Isis the Mother Protector Goddess of Egypt a simple project of labyrinth design came to life deep within the Tramontana Forest on the Isle of Cres in the Kvarner Bay of Croatia. It is a unique design of stone that is designed into three divisions representing the body, mind and soul. At its center rests a triangular three sided shape of stones representing a pyramid or feminine connection. It is called the Holy Trinity Labyrinth and it is one among seven other labyrinths that are installed here.

There is a Black Madonna statue (so called for its natural darkening of pear wood) in the church and there is much reverence made to the feminine form, Mother Mary and the Goddess in the nearby town of Beli. Each of the labyrinths represent a God or Goddess including Ishtar, Osiris, Tara, Rusalka, Lady and this labyrinth sits inbetween the labyrinths for Vesna and Isis.

Discovering this independent honoring opened the door to what unassumingly sits within this quiet community deep within its forest. An appreciation of the feminine that is rising in everyone and a chance to move and improve the wholeness of who we are as individuals as a result. Each of us possess feminine wisdom and with its rising we are discovering it more.

On this 178th day…
Explore the aspects of the feminine that is waking within you and around you too.

Illuminating our Plastic Preponderance

Day 177:  June 26
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Education
In The Month of: Exploration

A public display with a statement of our plastic consumption formed in the shape of a labyrinth in Poland

The Labyrinth of Plastic in Poland.  Artist: Luzinterruptus.  Photo Credits: Public Installation Art

The Labyrinth of plastic waste is designed by Spanish activists who want to bring attention to our cultivated consumption of plastic. The installation of art and statement took four days to fashion into a labyrinth of light using 26 meters of plastic waste using over 6,000 bottles encased in plastic bags to illustrate their message.  The installation has been recreated in Katowice, Poland, Buenos Aires and has been a part of public portrayal in museum spaces and in Madrid. The artists make many statements about our plastic addiction in an artistic way. By day the clear plastic makes an impressive statement hanging from a metal frame structure, though at night it becomes magical when illumination is added.

“We are trying to prove, in a poetic way, the amount of waste plastic that is consumed every day. In addition to focus on the big business of bottling water, which leads to very serious problems in developing countries , whose citizens have seen their aquifers with impunity be privatized for the exclusive enrichment of big business and the ruling classes, without scruples, ”  Luzinterruptus

The great Leonardo Da Vinci invented plastic and like many of the inventions he created, not all had a favorable outcome for society’s growth and continuation. Like our purpose in exploring we can find the great invention and intentions, though the reflective walk that brings us back to our starting point offers a new beginning in seeing the whole picture more clearly.

On this 177th day…
Explore the ideas that you have seen the other side of in your walks to equate the value of moving into new beginnings.

Lessons from Lithuania

Day 176:  June 25
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Education
In The Month of: Exploration

Lithuania's energetic labyrinth park in Plung'e

The Park of Labyrinths and Energetic shapes in Lithuania. Photo Credits: Energetic Labyrinth Park

Exploration allows us to open our minds and to delve into the questions of life. Traveling with our explorations help us to move with what we discover and both wonder and evidence our cursory understandings. In Lithuania there is a labyrinth park with several designs. all the designs are actually mazes. In areas denoted as mazes, there are labyrinths and while a labyrinth can be a maze, a maze is not really a labyrinth.  Through the labyrinth we can discover many metaphors and meanings that keep us on our path, though as we are also exploring possibilities in this month’s experience in Lithuania, we are provided with perspective of our possibilities and opportunities to use what we find.

On the very north central edge of Lithuania, we are invited to plunge into the Energetic Labyrinth and Geometrical Figures Park. It is happily located in the town of Plungės and park’s central theme is about our inner journey. There are five different labyrinths devoted to relationships, inner balance, inner self, chakras, and the five elements and angels. There are three geometric shapes of dome, mercaba and mandala along with programs and plenty of time and space to explore the questions of life in a natural environment. It is good to have a focused connection to the labyrinth journey of ourselves as we explore the world and in this location, it follows our own exploration of possibilities well.

On this 176th day…
Explore the areas of life that call your attention and observe the geometrical shapes that you are drawn to.

Labyrinths of the Scandinavian persuasion seem to be a natural part of the culture. Exploring this region one can find labyrinths are natural connections as they have been found in tribal communities and burial grounds indicating the familiarity and use over the ages. It is not uncommon to discover a labyrinth that’s been around for centuries, some dating back to 500 AD.  In Sweden alone at least 300 labyrinths are known to exist, and In the Lapland, the arctic compilation of Sweden, Finland and Norway there are a few areas along the peninsula and in the archipelago of many islands that are known for a number of stone labyrinths, much like the ones found on Bolshoi Zaratsky Island in Russia.

This labyrinth pictured above is part of a fishing village and as lore and legend are a part of the labyrinth, it is said that the labyrinths bring fisherman good luck. Exploring what is common place to natives often requires a little ingenuity to find unique features. Though with centuries of stories behind each labyrinth here, that alone may be the unique fascination.

Neolithic Translations of the Known and Unknown

One of the 14 stone labyrinths of the Solovetsky Islands in northernmost Russia

The Bolshoi Zayatsky Islands of Russia. Photo Credits News LM

On the westernmost tip of the edge of Russia in the northern area that extends to the White Sea, lays the Onega Bay tucked into a pocket of Russia’s expansive land mass. At the bay’s most northern point the archipelago of the six Solovetsky Islands can be found. The largest of these is the Bolshoi Zayatsky Island which measures approximately 95 square miles. The serenity of its remoteness and its rock formations seem to use it as an instrument for the sun’s focus might make it significant, though its history as a prison camp now occupied by a great monastery may be lend a more transformative perspective. What makes it interesting for our explorations is the 14 neolithic labyrinths that are found. From 6 to 25 meters, they are believed to be around 2,500 years in age without much in history available to tell their story, their stone structures are remarkably well preserved.

In 1992 Unesco declared the monastery to become a world heritage site and data suggests there has been habitation on this island since the 5th Century BC, though up until 1960’s the public was not allowed. It has been the seat of Monastic activity since the 15th century, so the origins may well be a reflective of this northernmost natural environment and sacred institutionalism.  There are also references that almost 30 labyrinths exist on this island as well. It is in all the unknown that much speculation arises and with intentional exploration and open mindedness, how we appreciably use what we do gather and share can make all the difference in what we learn about ourselves in making the unknown known.

On this 173rd day…

Explore your unknowns today. Those items that you might like to know more about or the ones that have been shunned. What known facts can surface in your walk of this day?

The Labyrinth in the Maze

Day 172:  June 21
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Education
In The Month of: Exploration

In the Yanquan Province there is a labyrinth that extends throughout the Philosophers Garden at the foot of the Great Wall of China

The Great Wall of China is a world wonder that is approximately 2300 years old and extends just over 13,000 miles through nine provinces. In the Northern section lays the Yangquan Shanxi Province that includes the Niangzi Pass also known as the Ladies Pass to honor the garrison that hosted an army of women led by the daughter of the first Emperor of Tang Dynasty. There is much that honors the feminine contribution in protection of its people in this area of the Great Wall. This might make it not so surprising to discover a labyrinth that is called a maze yet is a labyrinth at the ground level near the Ecological Gardens. It is called the Philosophers Maze and where it creates a labyrinth in one area, it extends to traverse through the entire garden structure. Golden statures of soldiers remind of defense, while a gallery of Calligraphy balances with the wisdom of expression that enhances the ambience of the environs. It is said that the philosophers walked the labyrinth with an idea and by the time they came to the end, they had manifested their calligraphic story.

The exploration and discovery of this labyrinth was a journey of search and research as its subtle existence was present, though where it could have led to dead ends and confusion, it turned into a labyrinth with an open mind to discover what else might be significant and related. Each clue led to another and soon the labyrinth revealed itself. The difference in all was the ability to look for possibility and be open to explore and discover with clear intent. Turning a maze mind into a labyrinth is to look past what appears to be a dead end by appreciating and turning into a new beginning.

On this 170th day…
Explore your relationship with labyrinth and maze today, do we turn one into the other for a useful outcome?
