The Labyrinth in the Maze

Day 172:  June 21
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Education
In The Month of: Exploration

In the Yanquan Province there is a labyrinth that extends throughout the Philosophers Garden at the foot of the Great Wall of China

The Philosophers Garden along the Great Wall of China. Photo Credits: Marguerite Carstairs

The Great Wall of China is a world wonder that is approximately 2300 years old and extends just over 13,000 miles through nine provinces. In the Northern section lays the Yangquan Shanxi Province that includes the Niangzi Pass also known as the Ladies Pass to honor the garrison that hosted an army of women led by the daughter of the first Emperor of Tang Dynasty. There is much that honors the feminine contribution in protection of its people in this area of the Great Wall. This might make it not so surprising to discover a labyrinth that is called a maze yet is a labyrinth at the ground level near the Ecological Gardens. It is called the Philosophers Maze and where it creates a labyrinth in one area, it extends to traverse through the entire garden structure. Golden statures of soldiers remind of defense, while a gallery of Calligraphy balances with the wisdom of expression that enhances the ambience of the environs. It is said that the philosophers walked the labyrinth with an idea and by the time they came to the end, they had manifested their calligraphic story.

The exploration and discovery of this labyrinth was a journey of search and research as its subtle existence was present, though where it could have led to dead ends and confusion, it turned into a labyrinth with an open mind to discover what else might be significant and related. Each clue led to another and soon the labyrinth revealed itself. The difference in all was the ability to look for possibility and be open to explore and discover with clear intent. Turning a maze mind into a labyrinth is to look past what appears to be a dead end by appreciating and turning into a new beginning.

On this 170th day…
Explore your relationship with labyrinth and maze today, do we turn one into the other for a useful outcome?

The Intersection of Truth

Day 171:  June 20
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Education
In The Month of: Exploration

colorful swastika labyrinth quadrants

The Swastika (interesection of truths) Labyrinth at the Haeinsa Temple in South Korea.             Photo credits Andrew Cheng

It may be of interest to note that the name Swastika comes from the ancient Sanskrit language. It’s geometrical shape that forms equalized quadrants of right angles is an icon for prosperity and luck in ancient religions of the Indian subcontinent and in the East and Southern Asian regions. Though in the last century, it became more notable as a negative stigma for Nazi Influence, even though it was adopted as and intentional symbol for National Pride. From the Greco-Roman to the Aztec, the swastika has been a positive symbol for well being and fortune.

The Design of the Swastika labyrinth at the Haeinsa Temple, which lies within the National Park of Mount Gayasan in South Korea and is used ceremonially with much color annually to honor the Tripitaka Koreana, the complete Buddhist scripture transcribed in 81,300 wooden blocks. The cross at the center of the labyrinth is called the intersection of truths and while it may look like a Roman Labyrinth, it is has a different direction and flow pattern though is similar in the quadrant focus.

The idea of intersections of truth is both daring and bold, though it is not much different than our focus on developing what it is that you might like to share. In our walks of this year, the honesty is often found at these intersection points.

Enjoy a Walk of the Swastika Labyrinth and the point of interesting truth in this video of the Haeinsa labyrinth

On this 171st day…

Explore in your walk of today, the place you call the intersection of truth.

The Art of Simplicity

Day 170:  June 19
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Education
In The Month of: Exploration

the spiral labyrinth of Muro Art Forest

The Undulating Spiral labyrinth of the Muro Art Forest. Photo and design by Dani Karavan

In the Southern area of Japan lays a remote landscape of artistry known as the Murou Art Forest in the countryside region of Nara in the village of Muro. It is the work of Israeli designer Dani Karavan who creates life-size monuments and tributes. He is known for creating monumental pieces and installing them in significant places of the world. The landscape of this forest park brings translates the natural world with artistic expression. In this park Karavan uses the idea of the spiral triumphantly with a Bamboo forest spiral that opens into a spiraled canal. The pattern continues into a simple labyrinth of a spiral that follows the stream in undulating curvature.

When one thing leads to another, we evolve and idea, concept or in the case of the Muro Art Forest, a design. The labyrinth here seems to bring a natural ending or start a natural beginning. Walking all three sections and returning gives us a full labyrinthic journey into art, expression and nature. Walking the spiral to and from can give us the simplicity that is nature in purest form. In the many complex designs and concepts available, the simple clean lines of opportunity can be impressive.

On this 170th day…
Explore in your walk of this day the natural way that one thing leads to another and how it comes to an expression for you.

While there are many hedge mazes and labyrinths, this labyrinth is made of sunflowers. In the Philippines there are a number of larger fields that grow sunflowers as their bright and sunny display brighten up communities and campuses.

In Pangasinan the grove of festive flowers has turned into the Tayug Eco Park, bringing the benefits of the sunflower to light along with other harvested flowers. To add to the benefit of the park, the flowers have been turned into a labyrinth and tourists flock from many areas to frequent the fun of the walk among the flowers.

There are a number of other parks that have sprung up creating mazes out of their sunflowers, so the idea has grown  in different areas of the Philippines.  As a result of all this interest there is now a Sunflower festival that takes place and includes the labyrinth of sunflowers.

On this 168th day…
Explore the ways you brighten up your own walk and community with a walk on the labyrinth.

Vertical Victories

Day 168:  June 17
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Education
In The Month of: Exploration

The Vertical Labyrinth of Bangkok. Photo credits by Urdesign

The Vertical Labyrinth is a playground, a motivation to get physical and an artistic representation of the 100th anniversary of the Siam Cement Group, the largest producer of construction materials in Thailand. Created by the team of Supermachine Studio, this architectural design sits in a community park in Bangsaen, near the larger city of Bangkok in Thailand. It is called the 10 Cal Vertical Labyrinth and is made of steps that explore through the regions of material and explore in a very physical way.  It’s called 10 cal because if you move at moderate speed from top to bottom, you will have used 10 calories.

If we are to explore and we have the chance to play, we are more likely to discover more than expected. The ingenuity and design is a masterful concept of great artistry and engineering for great purpose.

On this 168th day…
Explore how you play with your explorations and what you discover when you do.

A Heart Worthy Purpose with Practice

Day 167:  June 16
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Education
In The Month of: Exploration

the heart shaped labyrinth is full of the students of it from the Myanmar Center

The Labyrinth of the Interfaith Ministries of the Myanmar Center. Development and photo Credits: Jill Geoffrion

The designs are varied and inspiring  of the labyrinths in the world of exploration, though along the way we often find the stories of what created them, how they evolved and why they inspired individuals enough to create and share with the world. Many times it is art inspired, other instances stem from a way to bring awareness and still others bring with them a sense of learning, faith and the inspiration of the soul’s speaking.  In the many ways that labyrinths come to be around the world, the story of their creators is sometimes not available or lost and it very often has a very significant footnote in the origination and purpose.

Jill Geoffrion has made it a mission to share an education of the labyrinth within her ministries of sharing bringing people to own their experience by creating, building and developing from the inspired messages they can find when they know where to look. Inspired from the heart the labyrinths of Myanmar are a project of the Myanmar Insititute of Theology and what is inspiring is that their is an opportunity to grow from what is built. As part of the Master Level course a labyrinth is supposed to be built as well as a program developed around using and understanding it, ourselves and the largeness of theology.  It is a purpose with a practice and that can only lead to an evolution.

On this 167th day…
Explore your purposes and the practices around them that support the growth, direction and evolution.

Ancient Adaptabilities

Day 166:  June 15
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Education
In The Month of: Exploration

The 2,500 year old labyrinth of Horus in the Krishnagiri District of Southern India. Photo Credits: Times of India

Estimated at being 2,500 years old, the discovery of a circular labyrinth was made only a year before of an ancient labyrinth design by two researchers that was observed in our exploration for yesterday. This  design may be 500 years older and sits at approximately 700 square feet in area, making it another megalithic reward.

This labyrinth is located only two hours north of the other ancient labyrinth in the forested town of Horus in the Krishnagiri district  of Southern India. It is a place where gardens are not overrun by rabbits, but trampled annually by elephants to give some perspective of the area and Indian culture.

This circle of stones was found in a simple and obscure community used unknowingly in ceremony and ritual by its members adopting it in a prayerful way and adding it to their way of life. Its natural wonder and wisdom must have appealed to the community to simply adjust by using it and thereby gaining in understanding rather than clearing it in the name of progress. The labyrinth existed  before any of its inhabitants giving it a sense of greater appreciation and respect perhaps.

On this 166th day…
Explore what you have learned to adapt to instead of change and how it has made you more as a result.

Paths of Ancient Existence

the petroglyphs of Goa, a significant evidence for human history

The 20,000 year old petroglyphs at Goa, evidence of human development in Southern India. Photo Credits E. Simpson

A more famous labyrinth of India is an excavation of ancient history as it is a large petroglyph, thousands of years old and is accompanied by approximately 140 other glyphs that spans 30 x 60 meters on the edge of the Kushavati River bed.

At times in the year it can be under water with the monsoon effects of India, though it remains a great cultural remnant of India’s cultural heritage and a significant part of history. Dating back 20,000 to 30,000 years, these petroglyphs record evidence of early traces of human settlement in India.

Located in the small village of Pansaimol in the southern part of Goa, this labyrinth history sits close to the Arabian Sea.

This image displays a walkable design where other much smaller petroglyphs provide history perhaps of finger labyrinths:)

As we explore, we discover more of a global perspective of ourselves in the world of labyrinths, though as in this case today, we can discover the more of the labyrinth significance and how it relates to our world.

On this 165th day…
Explore the symbols, shapes and signs of your day to discover the evidence they bring forth into your life and purpose.

Megalithic Miracles

Day 164:  June 13
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Education
In The Month of: Exploration

The Megalithic Discovery of an ancient in tact labyrinth of 2,000 years in the Dharmapuri District of Southern India .         Photo credits: Medium.com

For 2,000 years this simple labyrinth has remained in quiet existence and become a part of local folklore for the people of the village of Vedharampatti. Until 2014, when by accident two researchers studying ancient cairns and structures happened upon the village and heard the stories of their special stone pathway.

This obscure small village rests in agricultural fields in the Dharmapuri district of Southern India.  It has been observed that because of its remote insignificance, the labyrinth has probably been in better care being tended by villagers instead of becoming rigid with rules and study and a tourist trap.

This rectangular design covers an area approximately 56 x 56 feet and is considered one of the largest labyrinths in the world.

On this 164th day…
Explore what you stumble upon today that you had an intention for. It is sometimes surprising to find what you were looking for.

Interactive Map Progress
A great Interactive experience this month will include a google map to track where we have been and what labyrinths you submit. Lets see if we can make a labyrinth pathway out of the month of travels based on the locations offered.  We began in Portland, Oregon…. Click here to watch the progress grow this month!
