Coaching the Labyrinth

TLS 365 Experience #176
Aug. 23, 2017

The labyrinth has many uses and while we may recount the blissful or meditative moments, the idea of grief and sorting through thoughts and feelings has been of enormous help to many. It takes us where we are at and can change our attitude or aptitude by the time the walk is complete with a whole new view point and perspective to consider.

As a coach, many I have worked with have used its metaphorical messages where others have used its affirming and reinforcing nature and whether finger or ground construction, the labyrinth offers a variety of ways to walk. In groups we begin to see how others walk and gain respect and acceptance for the pace and process of others. Patterns become easier to see and process becomes more practical and purposeful with the labyrinth in understanding life wisdom.

It is a tool of giving, grounding and gaining in many ways and a simple appreciation of helpful inner wisdom in others.

Labyrinth Meditation

TLS 365 Experience #175
Aug. 22, 2017

Chartres design labyrinth of raised bricks, Illinois

For those who find the stillness and the quiet of non movement a hardship in the quest of meditation, the labyrinth provides a place to understand the full nature of what meditation truly offers.

It is the place where we remove the distractions and become one in the moment of the moment. Where that can seem daunting to many, the labyrinth offers us the chance to still the busy task oriented nature of ourselves and let it fall away as we move into the walk. The secret of meditation is being all in to the moment we are in. When we release the world from our perspective and just walk, we are fully into that, just like if we danced and lost ourselves in the dance or sang and became the song.

When we move with the labyrinth and become the walk, the footstep, and the path we are the labyrinth and in meditation of it. It isn’t so much stillness that we seek, rather oneness with the experience we are in.

Candles of Commitment

TLS 365 Experience #174
Aug. 21, 2017

365 Club Annual Gathering Welcome Walk 2015 IndianaLeading the former 365 Club Welcome Walk at the Gathering one year, I asked each participant to take a candle off the table that resembled the size of their ability to commit. It allowed each to be honest with themselves and to consider a healthy perspective about what they wanted to achieve and the time they wished to devote to the daily experience they wished to keep.

It helped because it wasn’t a measurement of competition, rather a dedication to what each wanted to accomplish in being a part. Some candles were tall, others were thick and the variety helped all to find the right fit for their commitment. Like the stories that were shared when we were independently connected online and in email, lighting the candles off of each other reminded how the flame of any good intention continues and as we completed the experience, the sharing confirmed a call for what our existence was all about.

Annually we can dedicate, connect and confirm, though the message was clear, keeping the light alive was up to the sharing from one to another.

Singing the Labyrinth

TLS 365 Experience #173
Aug. 20, 2017

For years I walked the labyrinth in quiet meditation. Then one day I felt like singing and it was a wonderful comfort to be expressive with a connected feeling of my body to the earth and my song to the sky. It opened up much and I found that there are times of silence and times of singing now and the more I sing, the better I feel after a walk.

Bless and Be Blessed

TLS 365 Experience #172
Aug. 19, 2017

I had a lot on my mind as I went out for a walk, all family oriented. By the church there was a labyrinth I would pass on my walk and at times it intrigued me enough to walk and at other times I preferred to walk the terrain to where I was going and back again. In walking today, I thought I would invite the family and when I came to the where the church was in my walk, the labyrinth seemed to be my path of progression.

I recognized right away that the separate paths were walks with different family members and now understand why the labyrinth drew me in.  As I brought up the conversation of one, it led into the conversation of the next family member until I had reached a point of conclusion in the center. There I noticed what was similar in all and how everyone of them could benefit by my blessing and not my confusion.

As I walked back out, each path was a family member’s blessing and when I came to the end, just being in the blessing mode made me feel the blessings too. Grateful for this walk.

Weed Walking

TLS 365 Experience #171
Aug. 18, 2017

The labyrinth near me is not old, but older. It has weeds now that the warmer weather has come and there are a few rocks missing. Often there is something kicked out of place, so I know it is used, though not as well cared for. I never thought much about its condition, just that it was older, though now that the weeds have sprung up it appears there is no regular maintenance as I haven’t seen anyone in months.

I decided to simply care for it a little more each day when I came to walk, so began with the outer circle weeding half of it walking in and half walking out. The next time I worked on the next circle inward and the following week the next. By the time I had weeded to the center, still no one had come and some of the outer areas were beginning to grow back. I realized that this might be my simple ministry of weeding and walking and with regularity it could serve others as it served me to bring up ideas that I would like to release.

As the thought occurred, it seemed the whole nature of the walk was to become weedless, releasing any thought or distraction that occurred in my experience and just be with the experience.

Refocused Fun

TLS 365 Experience #169
Aug. 16, 2017

I love my kids and am generally a fun spirited parent, though this was one of those days when I had drawn the last of my patience and knew I was in great need of some alone time and unable to time myself out, so I took the kids to the park.

They generally want to engage me or be acknowledged as they play, though on this day I really just wanted them to play without need of my participation. I thought I would walk the labyrinth while they played on the swings and the slide next to it, though they seemed to find a sudden interest in the labyrinth and were already racing though it.

Rather than completely give into despair, I called them back and ask them to consider how many ways we could walk a labyrinth and challenged them to walk in one way and out another and then to continue with new and different ways until they could not find any more. As we all began to walk, I found my stride in a comfortable way appreciating my own walk as they sped by me with there own intentions lost in the challenge.

I began my walk and instead of the quiet reflection I thought I would focus upon, I found myself considering walking sideways, backward, singing and skipping. I walked along and more thoughts popped up in a similar pattern and as amused as I found it, my patience had shifted and my amusement grew. Watching my daughter attempt to summersault her way around the labyrinth and my son making faces throughout made me laugh and become just as inventive. Grateful for the shift and focus on fun.

Beach Designs

TLS 365 Experience #168
Aug. 15, 2017

The beach is always a favorite place to draw and experiment with new designs. The sand in the morning is moist enough to use a simple stick and draw a design large enough to walk or small enough to follow with your eyes. I experiment and wipe away what I don’t like and add something new as I develop an idea or image. I’ve also just like to leave behind designs and wonder what becomes of them between the tides and the others who come along to discover this interesting design left behind.

Tiny Steps

TLS 365 Experience #167
Aug. 14, 2017

Preschool Children on the labyrinth When it comes to children on the labyrinth, their small steps speak volumes of education and entertainment for any who are lucky enough to be in earshot. Sharing an opportunity with our preschool children one afternoon, I was curious to see where their curiosity and natural exploration would lead them.

So I lead them to the labyrinth and asked them to tell me what they saw in looking at the labyrinth. The answers were a priceless collection of ideas. Then I asked them to explore and some ran, some were tentative and still others were remarkably care free. At first they formed a line and wiggled as they walked. Then they began to play a kind of snake game trailing after each other.

The more they moved, the more they became independent and soon there was a mixture of collective movement in independent style. I marveled at watching how they interacted with the labyrinth in their own way and how these little tiny beings took steps to explore every inch and make it their playground of discovery.
