Refuge with Reality

Day 234  August 22
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Application
In The Month of: States of Being United

Holden Village labyrinth at night with light image

Of the great 48 states that are united contiguously, the anchoring land mass of the northwest corner that borders Canada is the state of Washington. Known for its timber landscape, it offers a remoteness with nature and an urbanness within its major cities of Seattle and Spokane. North and east of Seattle, the small town of Chelan is situated on the banks of the Chelan river that flows north to a national recreation area towards the Canadian border.  About a half day’s journey up the river and a hike to the west, one can find the refuge that is Holden Village.

As a spiritual community of faith and education, its remoteness is purposeful putting one on a path of pilgrimage to discover it. There nature provides an environment for learning a more natural style and the open arena to explore. It is a natural setting for a labyrinth to bring the inner soul in connection with a larger truth. Where this remoteness might seem to deter a population’s existence in mass, Holden Village appears to defy this logic as it offers many programs and hosts many groups, even opportunities to provide religious and spiritual education, volunteer or associate.

Image of the State of Washington as a labyrinthThe labyrinth is entwined in the programs and is simply available for the times in between for a commune with what is natural. With a Glacial Peak as a backdrop, the labyrinth rests at the edge of a clearing, perhaps as the entryway to an adventure into the forest of trees that create a natural border of distinction.

The seasons provide a way to unite the soul with celebration of what has been lived and what is yet to live. Using the environment creatively, as pictured above, may spark a little wonder in the walk and serve as a greater reminder of the wonder that is truly all around us. Sometimes we just have to step back a little farther to see it.

Opportunities for August

As we traveled the globe in search of exploration and returned with an abundance of realizing the consecutive connectives of the world in June and July, we touched the mere surface of our planet through the eyes of the labyrinth.  In the month of August, we continue the explorative nature looking for what insight brings us to unite. It can be a  discovery of the united purpose that we connect with others, or in the way we bring who we are with what we can and want to do.  What August brings is a focus of how the labyrinth brings state of being united, within ourselves within the United States. Send along the labyrinths, programs, art, and offerings within the United States that you feel best represents this for daily postings.

  1. What Unites
Reach out and share the unique labyrinths in this month within the United States that serve to unite. We look for the unique design, interesting purpose, connected message, in the labyrinth or in the ways we share with others in message or program, art, design and education applied. Share your ideas, programs, purpose images and experiences at the 365 Experience on the TLS website providing some detail of why you design, share, create, build or simply walk, who benefits and how it helps us unite. Personal insight or National perspectives are welcome.
  2. What brings Insight
As we take each day of the 31 available in August exploring what brings us insight with our selves or as a nation through the paths of the Labyrinth.  This quarter focuses on the ways we apply the insight we gain and as we are united with our own insights, may we use them as well in a way that unites us personally and also purposefully with others as a nation united.
  3. Join the online  Mid Month Dialogues Call on Friday August 15th at NOON PST
Be curious, research and share what you know of unique United States labyrinths, the people, the programs, the designs, the resources or simply the desires in the first half of the month and apply something that you find unique to your own life walk. Join us on the Mid Month Dialogues to share what you discovered, ask questions and hear from others about what they explored and discovered. Be inspired with a greater appreciation of what unites us with more impactful insight that brings our labyrinth connection in line with greater perspective in our year of living honestly.   Call connection Information

Curiosity Champions Celebration

Day 143: May 23
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Education
In The Month of: Celebration

The labyrinth at Boulder CitySometimes the celebrations come in the change of expectations. Where too much expectation leaves us hoping, wanting and generally unfulfilled, having little seems to provide happy surprises. General curiosity appears to be a nice alternative to expectation as when we earnestly want to know, there is a humility present instead of an entitlement. Today was such a day of curiosity. Finding there was a known labyrinth only 20 minutes away from a present appointment and the time being available for such an exploration, taking the journey was an easy decision. Even after having designed hundreds of labyrinths, created programs and facilitations in the hundreds and traveled nationally and internationally with great perspective; there was something important about being so close and taking the opportunity

From pictures and images previously shared, it didn’t appear that it would be anything much different, however in an area where labyrinths aren’t as prevalent as other more populated locations, it may have been what made the draw so inviting. Fortunately, the drive only found a few detours along the way and in the variety of turns to arrive, a labyrinth formed in the destination’s journey.

A line of Poplar trees welcomed for a stretch of a quarter mile brought a delightful smile as a first impression that foretold of what lay ahead. The labyrinth was part of a peace garden and the sheer size of the cacti and plant formations displayed visual clues of the garden’s age . Where the images shared previously were true to form of the labyrinth’s basic formation, they did not depict the serene setting, the open surroundings or the subtle energies present. Curiosity it seemed, had won out.  There was a magical walk in the twilight waiting here and in the solo splendor of being alone, the grace of this space was rich in simplicity and compassionate wisdom of those who had walked this path and left their wishes behind. Cause for quiet celebration.

On this 143rd day…
Take a walk with expectation and then take one with curiosity. Observe the differences and which brings you truth.

The Month of Celebration, Appreciation and Realization

May’s Focus: Celebration

Life is a celebration to explore in the next 31 days. With the idea of walking the labyrinth and its tri-focus on releasing, receiving and reflecting, let’s shift the perspective to one that walks in with appreciation, finds the honest realization from each day and walks out in celebration.  Observe what 31 days of this focus might reflect and how it elevates our life condition.

Four focus points to expand your celebration of this month’s experience:

  1. Share your ideas, in your personal experiences, how you share the labyrinth with others, art, design or method of construction or in other ways that it may be utilized. Let others know about this daily experience and opportunity by sharing it. Find us on this blog and on the Labyrinth Societies Facebook page
  2. Join our Mid Month Dialogues on May 15th at 2pm CST for a lively look at what you have created and will create in the idea of celebration. This month’s theme was a direct result of our last month’s Mid Month Dialogue!
  3. Participate in the daily opportunity of this educational focus of  your personal journey, how you lead, teach or share with others, and what you create for contribution or purpose with this theme.
  4. Remember that our theme is about finding our greater capacities, abilities and true realities in being honest with our potential. We focus on what we can do as it is inherently more useful and productive.

What is next... in the second half labyrinth

One might think that in the second half of a celebration there is clean up; however in our quest there is a wonderful opportunity to review what happened in the first half of the month and now use it more efficiently, effectively and perhaps excitedly in the second half. How might you complete the second half of this labyrinth and how might it be in step with the balance of your steps into the rest of May?

Your knowing, understanding and realizations that have occurred in the elements of celebration, appreciation and realization are the capabilities expanding, evolving and elevating for our walking, waking and working consciousness.

Do enjoy your next steps, next creations, next facilitations, next nexts! The land of next can be full of anticipation, dreams and inspirations.

On this 136th day…
In the Second Half of Celebration, appreciate your step into what it is that comes next today.

Mid Month Calendar Labyrinth

Tis the Ides of the month in the middle of May and a time to mark your calendars as having reached the 135th day of the year marking that we are more than a third of the way through the year at 37%.  On this day we join in dialogue and celebrate what we have found significant in the first half of the month, how it has helped us to realize more of who we are and what we are capable of and how we might have appreciated our journey of discovery so far this month.

The second half of our month offers a chance with realization to celebrate and appreciate in a different way, the things that come across our path, make our trails or migrations that we intentionally design.

Find your significant places on the labyrinth this month, one for each celebration you have created. Rejoice, appreciate and look forward to adding markers of celebration to the second half of your month.

On this 135th day…
In your walk of this day, celebrate what you have realized and appreciated in the month this far.

Walking as One

Day 125: May 5
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Education
In The Month of: Celebration

World Labyrinth Day Image from 2009Nine years ago the concept of World Labyrinth Day was recreated. Originally it had been instituted almost ten years prior, though served for only a few years. A committee was established by Stephanie Blackton to bring about a unique day to celebrate the labyrinth and heighten its significance and purpose in the world. Having sat on that committee, it was decided to be celebrated on the first Saturday in May as there was to be a great display of the labyrinth on the National Mall in Washington DC that year and since 2009 there have been annual celebrations to commemorate the date all over the world.

This is the image I created nine years ago when I developed the slogan “Walk the world as one” and explained to the committee that by designating the hour of 1pm as a time everyone could appreciate in whatever time zone they happen to be in, we would all be walking as one at 1pm in every time zone throughout the day. It seemed a great way to unite our purpose and our people in the enthusiasm and appreciation that the labyrinth brings all day long world wide.  Tickle me pink, nine years later and the same slogan is still used to bring together facilitators, builders, educators, artists, designers and enthusiasts in unique ways that join with one common focus; celebration of the labyrinth.

Helpful Links for World Labyrinth Day

Here is a link to the TLS 365 Experience resource page where a finger labyrinth can be downloaded if you are without a nearby group or labyrinth to walk or an online virtual walk.

If you would like to locate a labyrinth to walk, here’s a link to the World Wide Labyrinth Locator.

If you want to know of walks happening in your area, the Labyrinth Society posts events submitted.

On this 125th day…
Appreciate the Oneness focus of this day and as you walk, realize how the world walks with you in celebration.

Welcome May

Day 121: May 1
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Education
In The Month of: Celebration

Celebration confetti and balloons rising from the labyrinthIn this year of living honestly we look at the ways we can evolve our understanding of ourselves, our purpose with the labyrinth and our connection to others in the way we share it or comprehend larger meanings. We focus on quarterly concepts such as the awareness we’ve appreciated in the first and the concept of education for ourselves and the way we use the labyrinth with others in these three months. Our focus changes to add ways to appreciate that education differently and while we used the power of amusement to widen our focus, this month’s exploration focuses on the idea of celebration.

Life is a gift to celebrate daily. Life also offers us adversity and many of our former lessons have focused on overcoming and surviving that time for appreciating the celebrations becomes the thing we do for special occasions. Living the idea of celebration through appreciation and realization is an opportunity in the next 30 days to walk differently, share differently and care differently in the month of  May. Look forward to sharing innovations and creations, sharing in our mid month dialogues and taking steps to create a celebratory experience in this month.

Levity on the Labyrinth

TLS 365 Experience #187
September 3, 2017

Levity on the LabyrinthThe labyrinth provides us with many uses and a variety of ways to share it. I have walked the solemn and quiet path in search of discovery or peaceful transitions, though I also find a sense of celebration of life on it as well. It is many things to many people and fitting in that way, as a wondeful acceptance and appreciation of our differences.

Leading a group in a reflective walk, there was a sense of cheer in the group that formed from new perspectives learned in our time together. For some it was pure jubilation and there was a joyful attitude that was quite infectious in the group. As we shared revelations in our discussions, several wanted to walk again and in doing so there was a dance in the step and a playful skipping that seemed a very fitting expression of the body. In the end a few posed in the center with an uplifting statement of “TA-DA”.

With such lightness, it left all in an appreciated state and a satisfied sense of being in the world.  The world could do with a bit more levity to remind us of our passion and purpose more often.

Independence

fireworks over desert labyrinth

Celebrations and Silence, fireworks in the desert

As the Nation of America celebrates it’s historic independence, there is an exploration of the word in a deeper sense for labyrinth walkers. Together we celebrate what’s right about our nation, we let go of all the divisions and we come together in groups to commune. Even though many will not be in agreement about how we celebrate the day’s purpose, we will all find small cause for celebration. Perhaps we are off work, maybe we get connected with loved ones or even get to be part of something bigger such as participation in a parade.

We will find our causes and as a nation we will lift ourselves maybe just for the day. For those who walk, it may be our independent journey, though as we move we are also joined by the essence of celebration that emanates from the nation around us. For those in other nations, we are but neighbors who’s party spills over. Join in and find your own connection to it while maintaining your independence from it.

Somehow it is that blissful place about being on the edge of both worlds…should we choose to see it that way.
