Laughter is a Celebration

Day 126: May 6
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Education
In The Month of: Celebration

World Laughter Day LabyrinthThe day after World Labyrinth Day is World Laughter Day. This international day has been around longer than World Labyrinth Day, originating in 1998 and in this year celebrates its 20th Anniversary, always annually on the first Sunday of May.  For years I held events on both Saturday and Sunday for World Labyrinth Day and World Laughter Day and often used the labyrinth for both days as having a focus on the labyrinth is what brought a focus for the last decade of laughter as well.

Spending ten days in Chartres, France in 2006 on study and retreat, there was always laughter around our group and it grew each day spilling out into the Chartres cathedral during one quiet walk. It began among two of us and quickly infected everyone else. It brought a real focus that perhaps as facilitators, we all might be taking our level of reverence and respect a little too seriously.  From that day forth the labyrinth held a sense of humanity, reality and freedom to be more honest with myself and offer up its wonders with reality.

On this day, laughter creates a celebration for the voice. When we breathe in and laugh out we can improve our ability to extend exhalation and release much of what is built up inside. The more we laugh, the better it feels and the more socially connected we can become with others. Each year I have created and posted a design for Google’s doodles (at the top of the labyrinth in the picture) since 2008 in the hopes that one year they would use it for World Laughter  Day. Imagine the world waking up, opening their browsers and on display is the Google logo dressed up as giggle, the likelihood of a laugh is sure to induce a smile or a moment of mirth. In that moment, we can appreciate the world in a happier place…. when you’re glad you can’t be sad or mad… laughter is a simple method for World Peace.

On this 125th day…
Breathe in as you walk your steps on the labyrinth today and as you traverse the length of pathway in between turns, release your breath with a laugh. As you turn inhale and repeat and by the time you find the center, you will find your center and reason for celebration.

The Month of Celebration, Appreciation and Realization
May’s Focus: Celebration

Life is a celebration to explore in the next 31 days. With the idea of walking the labyrinth and its tri-focus on releasing, receiving and reflecting, let’s shift the perspective to one that walks in with appreciation, finds the honest realization from each day and walks out in celebration.  Observe what 31 days of this focus might reflect and how it elevates our life condition.

Four focus points to expand your celebration of this month’s experience:

  1. Share your ideas, in your personal experiences, how you share the labyrinth with others, art, design or method of construction or in other ways that it may be utilized. Let others know about this daily experience and opportunity by sharing it. Find us on this blog and on the Labyrinth Societies Facebook page
  2. Join our Mid Month Dialogues on May 15th at 2pm CST for a lively look at what you have created and will create in the idea of celebration. This month’s theme was a direct result of our last month’s Mid Month Dialogue!
  3. Participate in the daily opportunity of this educational focus of  your personal journey, how you lead, teach or share with others, and what you create for contribution or purpose with this theme.
  4. Remember that our theme is about finding our greater capacities, abilities and true realities in being honest with our potential. We focus on what we can do as it is inherently more useful and productive.

Spiro Mania

Day 89: March 30
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Awareness
In The Month of: Discover

Spiro Mania LabyrinthsThe mechanism of the spiral is a phenomenon in our lifetime, it represents who we are, how we respond and interact with our environment and the realization that we all function in the same way of spiraling in motion, even when we do not realize it. This month has given us the opportunity to realize our surroundings in nature and the environment we reside in as well as our internal physical nature. We have alluded to the spirals within our brain where it refers physical, though not the cognitive mental functionality or emotional responsiveness.

When we walk the labyrinth we are unwinding the mind in a physical way, though we are also walking with thoughts and feelings and that is what is at the heart of our discoveries of realize and surprise this month in our capacity. Our physicality does change in the stress release provided in a labyrinth walk for the better, though so does our attitude and aptitude. We can realize the spiral of thought expanding with creativity and ideas, once the direction of our spiral changes from being stressed to being impressed with a new focus. The same applies to our attitude, as it can spiral the way we feel up a helix spiral or down. When we walk the labyrinth, we pause, reflect, consider and value our time connected to something more universal.  One might imagine that anytime an individual walks a labyrinth, there is probably someone, somewhere walking one too.

Today’s design incorporated a trove of spirals that we have appreciated in this month, it is not all, though one that will keep you on a happy finger walk for a while should you wish to deeply spiral within the spirals. Move from top to bottom and use the Archimedes or Arithmetic Spiral to center as a suggestion, or be creative and spiral at your own pace and passion.

A suggestion to walk with:

On this 89th day…
Walk with the spiral of thoughts and feelings, be aware of the spiral beyond the physical sense and notice what redirects, corrects or reflects in your experience.

March’s Focus

As it is now the third month of the year and our last month of growing awareness before we delve into the ways of education, allow this month be one that creates both the light hearted discovery and profound realization. How can you create more awareness with the labyrinth personally or in the ways you share with others? Where do you notice a spiral effect that takes you to the point or away from it? Be on the lookout for the spiraling nature this month.

  1. Realize
In the 31 Days this month offers, become aware of the daily realizations that you create and discover. Walking daily creates compound interest in what you look forward to and discover each day. Let March become your month of expanded capacity as you walk to make each day and adventure in exploration of what more you can explore. Seek to spiral into new and inspiring realization and whether it is rich and profound or light hearted and amusing… be open, walk with intention and you are bound to come away larger.

2. Surprise
One can realize and find much in the depth of understanding that awareness offers us, though when we look forward to realization of that depth and awareness, it can inspire new ways of appreciation and discovery in both our  process and capabilities as we are constantly growing, no matter what age. Invite the element of  surprise into what you realize as it can lift what you discover into seeing a bit more than before.  Notice the spiral effect of how you move from realize to surprise and make discovery more significant and true.

Solution Path

TLS 365 Experience #156
Aug. 3, 2017

Getting a group on the labyrinth during a workshop was a wonderful way to get everyone connected.  I found a group that was just not connecting with each other in the material that was presented. As the material worked well with other groups, it was a question.

We had the thought to put everyone on the labyrinth and walk with a few questions. As they completed, we sat down for a discussion and found a very real cultural misunderstanding had occurred. Using the labyrinth helped everyone to understand the point, the process and the practical application as intended and also where the error in judgement had occurred without an issue.

If we had not thought to find a quick way to get everyone communicating in this way, we would have missed a valuable lesson into the cultural implication that had been misinterpreted. No one had a clue that this had not been part of our plan and without skipping a beat, we were back on the path of purpose and progress.
