Curiosity Champions Celebration

Day 143: May 23
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Education
In The Month of: Celebration

The labyrinth at Boulder CitySometimes the celebrations come in the change of expectations. Where too much expectation leaves us hoping, wanting and generally unfulfilled, having little seems to provide happy surprises. General curiosity appears to be a nice alternative to expectation as when we earnestly want to know, there is a humility present instead of an entitlement. Today was such a day of curiosity. Finding there was a known labyrinth only 20 minutes away from a present appointment and the time being available for such an exploration, taking the journey was an easy decision. Even after having designed hundreds of labyrinths, created programs and facilitations in the hundreds and traveled nationally and internationally with great perspective; there was something important about being so close and taking the opportunity

From pictures and images previously shared, it didn’t appear that it would be anything much different, however in an area where labyrinths aren’t as prevalent as other more populated locations, it may have been what made the draw so inviting. Fortunately, the drive only found a few detours along the way and in the variety of turns to arrive, a labyrinth formed in the destination’s journey.

A line of Poplar trees welcomed for a stretch of a quarter mile brought a delightful smile as a first impression that foretold of what lay ahead. The labyrinth was part of a peace garden and the sheer size of the cacti and plant formations displayed visual clues of the garden’s age . Where the images shared previously were true to form of the labyrinth’s basic formation, they did not depict the serene setting, the open surroundings or the subtle energies present. Curiosity it seemed, had won out.  There was a magical walk in the twilight waiting here and in the solo splendor of being alone, the grace of this space was rich in simplicity and compassionate wisdom of those who had walked this path and left their wishes behind. Cause for quiet celebration.

On this 143rd day…
Take a walk with expectation and then take one with curiosity. Observe the differences and which brings you truth.

The Month of Celebration, Appreciation and Realization

May’s Focus: Celebration

Life is a celebration to explore in the next 31 days. With the idea of walking the labyrinth and its tri-focus on releasing, receiving and reflecting, let’s shift the perspective to one that walks in with appreciation, finds the honest realization from each day and walks out in celebration.  Observe what 31 days of this focus might reflect and how it elevates our life condition.

Four focus points to expand your celebration of this month’s experience:

  1. Share your ideas, in your personal experiences, how you share the labyrinth with others, art, design or method of construction or in other ways that it may be utilized. Let others know about this daily experience and opportunity by sharing it. Find us on this blog and on the Labyrinth Societies Facebook page
  2. Join our Mid Month Dialogues on May 15th at 2pm CST for a lively look at what you have created and will create in the idea of celebration. This month’s theme was a direct result of our last month’s Mid Month Dialogue!
  3. Participate in the daily opportunity of this educational focus of  your personal journey, how you lead, teach or share with others, and what you create for contribution or purpose with this theme.
  4. Remember that our theme is about finding our greater capacities, abilities and true realities in being honest with our potential. We focus on what we can do as it is inherently more useful and productive.

April Showers

Day 119: April 29
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Education
In The Month of: Amusement

April Showers LabyrinthApril showers brought a season of reminders in this month of the fullness of a year. Having traveled in different states this month, the different states of event and experience were realized in most amusing ways. The unusual snows that appeared overnight in Chicago, not once but four times during my stay reminded of the heartiness of the Midwest character as a result of experiencing and adapting to change.

It was as if April had become a perpetual April Fool’s Day joke and as it is National Humor Month, the steps taken in becoming more amused with whatever befalls, became a rich opportunity to enjoy and to listen, learn and laugh with the multitude of overly serious attitudes that perpetuate the circumstances we find ourselves in.  When we are more ready to listen, we hear more. When we are open to curiosity, we learn more and when we laugh more, we create a dynamic introspective of perspective.

The showers of April brought forth a more amusing and appreciative side of ourselves and in the spirit of the season, we encompassed winter, spring, summer and construction season activities all in the interesting span of living a year’s worth of weather in 30 days. With April showers we nourish what we seed and plant, so in this time of seasonable shifts, allow the reflective walk today to harvest what you have sown.

On this 119th day…
Step into your favorite season and notice what occurs in your walk today. Step into each season and observe your responses.

April's Banner Year of Living Honestly 2018April’s Focus

Let this month unfurl your creativity, spontaneity and jocularity. It feels good to feel good and while we have been conditioned to shush our good times, let the labyrinth be our own private creation station of amusement, enjoyment and playful experiments. This month educate with amusement and see how much farther you get. Have fun and be creative.  We have three opportunities to education your potential with amusement this month that involves either your personal walk, your ability to design and how much you can learn by sharing. On your Mark, Get Set…Go!

  1. Innovate – Walk Amused
In the 30 days that grace this month, play with the way you personally experience the labyrinth. Let this season of education be one of personal bests and enjoy finding a new way to be innovative, creative, inspired and amused in your personal experiences. I’d love to see what you come up with!
    Please share your wonderful experiences!

2. Create – Design Inspired
To date I have created 95 different labyrinth creations and designs since the beginning of the year, let that inspire you to create something new this month that is inspiring and firing for your imagination. Einstein said that playing with ideas was the highest form of research and this is an education for all of us.  As you walk in new ways, share your designs as I have done with mine last year and this. Perfection isn’t what we are after, amusement is! I look forward to seeing what you come up with! I will toss out lots of inspiring ideas… stay tuned daily.
Share away and become a glad designer instead of a mad one!

3. Relate – Share with Care
One of the best ways to learn anything is having to teach or explain it to someone else. Whether you facilitate others, teach or simply share with a few, spend the month discovering amusing new ways to help others get more out of their walk with a lighter attitude and a more earnest enjoyment in what you share. Anything you want to know more about, share and this month share with a fun flair and notice how much more you actually begin to understand. You just might find a side of yourself forgotten. To receive all that, be a great giver.
Share what you discover!

Galactic Steps

Day 62: March 3
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Awareness
In The Month of: Discover

The most ancient spiral in our universe is being discovered and researched at the Australian National University and known simply as Galaxy A1689B11. It appears to be 11 billion years old and is considered to be very rare, as spirals are not often found in the early stages of Universal origins.

The importance of this ancient spiral holds a key to unlocking the sequencing of galaxies in their formation and expansion as expressed by noted astronomer Edwin Hubble in 1925. In a spiral galaxy the arms that extend and wrap around  the center are categorized by their tight circular formation or by its looseness. Stars are formed in the arms and the center is known as the great bulge. It is where old stars are located and black holes exist.  One can perhaps better understand the nature of labyrinth design in this tight or loosely structured circular circumference and relate to the black holes with infinite curiosity of what seems to be similarily in the center of the labyrinth; perhaps as a vortex of possibility.

Taking in the vastness of this ancient universe and our spiral shaped Milky Way galaxy, steps on the path today were more infinitely more expansive in consideration. While the majority of galaxies are spiral, there are also elliptical and irregular varieties; each circular in nature. It makes the labyrinth’s similar qualities more interesting and curiously significant. Walking into the labyrinth offers a universe of possibilities and finding a black hole of infinite wonder in its center can become a repository for release or an endless supply of imagination. To walk larger and become more than we currently know is the ultimate in honest realization and whether it is a small realization or a large one, the surprises of discovery always make it more delightful and insightful.

A suggestion to walk with:

On this 63rd day…
Walk each step larger than the step before in infinite wonder and expansion relating to a larger universal design.

March’s Focus

As it is now the third month of the year and our last month of growing awareness before we delve into the ways of education, allow this month be one that creates both the light hearted discovery and profound realization. How can you create more awareness with the labyrinth personally or in the ways you share with others? Where do you notice a spiral effect that takes you to the point or away from it? Be on the lookout for the spiraling nature this month.

  1. Realize
In the 31 Days this month offers, become aware of the daily realizations that you create and discover. Walking daily creates compound interest in what you look forward to and discover each day. Let March become your month of expanded capacity as you walk to make each day and adventure in exploration of what more you can explore. Seek to spiral into new and inspiring realization and whether it is rich and profound or light hearted and amusing… be open, walk with intention and you are bound to come away larger.

2. Surprise
One can realize and find much in the depth of understanding that awareness offers us, though when we look forward to realization of that depth and awareness, it can inspire new ways of appreciation and discovery in both our  process and capabilities as we are constantly growing, no matter what age. Invite the element of  surprise into what you realize as it can lift what you discover into seeing a bit more than before.  Notice the spiral effect of how you move from realize to surprise and make discovery more significant and true.

Heart In Connection

Day 42: February 11
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Awareness
In The Month of: Love

Today an early morning talk with middle school aged group of students didn’t go as well as planned, not bad, just not the honest emergence of conversation that typically would reach out and connected that was more true and useful. There was a lot of unsurity as to why there was a reserve, though a knowing that sometimes the truth finds its communication in time or metaphor that will find its way out in its own time.

Having time in the day, a hike in the red rocks allowed for a view of the labyrinth from far above and looking down. Today the message of curiosity was not found in the initial physical body of walking the circles, instead from a high perch of climbing above. It allowed for the creativity of a finger walk, drawing circles in the air tracing the labyrinth below , which provided a more elevated perspective. The personal message was to walk on and discover something new.

In sync with a different project,  new pathways made sense. Walking the Earth brought answers that connected and expressed themselves in a natural way that the earlier morning talk had not. Points of clarity and a formation of a systematic approach came to mind and in short order a more direct, honest and useful dialogue found its way from heart to head beneficially. Next week’s talk will benefit from this week’s questions, walk and natural sense of getting to the heart of the matter.

The red rocks will be left satisfied in the appreciation that rose throughout the discoveries and footsteps of connection that brought body to Earth and heart with soul. The honest voice of the heart rose in nature and as if to make its declaration, a heart drawn into the rock showed up with the reminder to put what matters into the heart for a more natural result. And so I did…

—————————————————————————————

A suggestion to walk with:

On this 42nd day…
Walk in love, walk in honesty

————————————————————————————–

February’s Focus

As it is the second month of the year, enjoy two opportunities… discovery and realization.

  1. Discover your Love capacity:
This month’s 28 days will focus on how we are loving the moments we are creating. Learning to be “in love” with our focus, it expands who we are beyond the partnered relational aspects and into the focus of loving what we offer the world, who we are in community, relating at a higher level to everything and everyone; and most significantly,  elevating the relationship we have with ourselves. Prepare for a wonderful experience of exercising the power of love with the freedom of honesty to realize a greater look at possibilities and potential n a delightful way. Discover how capable you are!

2. Realize synchronous evidence:
Inspired by the variety of heart shaped labyrinths, this month capture your experiences with images of the heart. Be on the look out for where the synchronicity of the moments where your heart is in focus and then look around to see where you can find the shape of a heart in symbol. Your awareness will expand and you just might be surprised to find that when we look with an open heart, we can find it in reference near by. It does require a bit of imagination, though the findings are wonderfully worth it. Share all the heart shaped labyrinth images you find with images, links or comments and I will be happy to post the images and moments.
Care to Share and Share to Care!

The Allure of Twilight

Day 25: January 25
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Awareness
In The Month of: Definition

This mornings definition called for barefoot in the small hours of the morning’s twilight. The gravel and dirt cold beneath my feet longed a bit for the familiar warm earth and grass mown labyrinth of my backyard in the Midwest a few summers ago.

The Chicago chill of January reminded me of the snow shuffling, so my mind sought out warmer memories.  While currently its much warmer in the desert, the morning holds a coolness to bristle the spirit and awaken the stride. Reminded of the Annual Gathering’s walk in similar hours the green of the grass was alluring to my barefooted heart and noting the illumination still glowing in the predawn shadows, I found the walk invigorating at first, but numbing by the center. Thankful for the small platform in the center, it allowed time for thawing out.

The very real wish to engage in what appeared magical gave way to the reality of the numbing effect, which was all too similar in this mornings walk in the uncomfortability of barefoot on cold stones and gravel. Sometimes the allure of a fantasy meets reality and gives into practicality and sometimes the endurance provides an introspective of ourselves that goes beyond what we may believe we are capable of when curiosity overtakes reasoning. These twilight hours can be the daring time of infinite possibilities and the honest moments where we dare to delve into dreams and desires come at a time when we are often the only ones up to witness it.

A suggestion to walk with:

Imagine your honesty at predawn, how does it call forth truth?

Just One More Step

TLS 365 Experience #275
November 30, 2017

Advice from long ago when I thought I was finished or had enough of something, was to take one more step. Thoughts of not being good enough surfaced at times and perfection at other times, though its larger message was much deeper than my small thoughts of the time.  Sorting out a problem one day, the labyrinth offered the opportunity to get up and away from the issue and clear the mind.

The peace of the walk was interrupted by thoughts that took me back to earlier days and the message of taking one more step surfaced. Remembering I was on a walk of peace and clarity, I began to release thoughts from my mind in order to have the clarity to focus on the problem at hand. As thoughts continued to surface, determination became the focus to continue the walk. The more thoughts arose, the more I walked until I stopped in the center and sat down to listen. Finally achieving the quiet and calm, I relaxed and felt peaceful again and soon after rose to complete the walk in the return steps. In those steps a realization of how determination was what drove the next step. Determination was indeed the answer to the problem at hand and taking one more step had helped to understand this.

A  greater understanding revealed itself however and in taking one more step showed a perspective that would not have been seen had I not. That further step provided a wonderful moment to evaluate efforts and really understand satisfaction. It also offered a curiosity; what if when I had the problem, I just took the next step and considered what the solution might be… what might I have truly realized in the walk of solution?

Evaluating and Supporting

TLS 365 Experience #221
October 7, 2017

A friend and fellow Labyrinth Facilitator was working toward her Veriditas Facilitation requirements and asked me to evaluate one of her walks. It was a pleasure and a contribution to her education and mine as evaluator. She created a marvelous walk and full experience for individuals. As they asked many questions afterwards it was a great result of stirring curiosity and creating a desire to know and understand more.

I found in being present, assisting and evaluating, it was a contribution I received in supporting her work, just in watching how she touched others. We receive when we give and we give when we receive.

Anatomy of a Question

TLS 365 Experience #200
September 16, 2017

When I walk the labyrinth, it is often to bring up thoughts, feelings, ideas and questions that are floating around inside of me and wish an external outlet. As I take steps onto the path I am headed inward and the awareness of my body, mind and soul alignment are brought to my attention.

Sensory perception awakens constriction and location.  The more steps that traverse the path inward, the more the emergence of emotion and logic that arise, observe without intrusion. The walking body negotiates the turns and sets the pace of function and as the application of movement spirals inwards traversing the pattern of back and forth, the gentle rocking of what is unimportant loosens and releases the unnecessary in the constriction.

By the time the center has been reached in the labyrinth, the falling away of what is not relevant reveals a true question from the former constriction. The question can now more uniquely fit to evolve circumstance. Knowing a true question, makes finding the walk of the answer one of application and allowance. The walk of reverse is where the additions become the discoveries and the journey to the answer is one of purposeful and practical curiosity.

Tiny Steps

TLS 365 Experience #167
Aug. 14, 2017

Preschool Children on the labyrinth When it comes to children on the labyrinth, their small steps speak volumes of education and entertainment for any who are lucky enough to be in earshot. Sharing an opportunity with our preschool children one afternoon, I was curious to see where their curiosity and natural exploration would lead them.

So I lead them to the labyrinth and asked them to tell me what they saw in looking at the labyrinth. The answers were a priceless collection of ideas. Then I asked them to explore and some ran, some were tentative and still others were remarkably care free. At first they formed a line and wiggled as they walked. Then they began to play a kind of snake game trailing after each other.

The more they moved, the more they became independent and soon there was a mixture of collective movement in independent style. I marveled at watching how they interacted with the labyrinth in their own way and how these little tiny beings took steps to explore every inch and make it their playground of discovery.

Something Felt

TLS 365 Experience #159
Aug. 6, 2017

We had an article to write and had written many before, though today all were very stumped. Suggesting a walk on the labyrinth nearby, most decided to go and as it was a group project, it would have been nice to have all join us, though we were content with letting all have their say and find their way. Those that joined were glad to be outdoors and felt a sense of resilience in being in step with both nature and themselves.

As we began we were feeling a little free and a little goofy, though the awkwardness of the intimacy we were creating soon relaxed as everyone found their individuality and set aside any thoughts of what the other might think. We settled into our own experience and our own relationship with the slump in the collective creativity that was typically available with this group. For myself, I relaxed and stopped asking why. Instead any thoughts of force fell away and surrendered to curiosity.

What I came to consider dropped off and my focus became of my feet, my steps and the outside air. As I walked I grew in a confident knowing way to simply appreciate many things. That we took the moment to consider the group’s need, the purpose of our prose, the point of our group and the individuality and characteristics of those who came together to accomplish something similar.

The walk became about so many singular pieces that what was numb became alive and each piece seemed to find its importance in the whole. It was a walk of unification and our collective knowing seemed to show up again in everyone as we found ourselves much more communicative and creative in discussion afterwards. Accomplishment wasn’t just something we did, it was something we felt.
