The Wisdom of Waiting

TLS 365 Experience #237
October 23, 2017

Our message to the class today was to put something in and take something away.

We demonstrated this balanced equation on the labyrinth by walking in with a problem and returning with a solution. To prove the point we asked for it to be of a personal nature that each could find some element that was the solution or could lead them to one.

As the walk completed our discussion added the value of patience as several had been blank on finding solution, though noted the more peaceful way they felt. We offered a patience meditation and made a writing assignment for the evening.

By the next day everyone had found an answer or element that led them to look in a new direction.  When we teach we discover more than we knew before.

The Voice of the Labyrinth

TLS 365 Experience #229
October 15, 2017

Expressions on the labyrinth, a voice for the labyrinth. LAT2012Having painted the outline of a classical design onto a canvas cloth for a walk, I had intended to add other features after the walk completed. There was much in release and discovery in this walk that was offered and participants in the walk asked if they could inscribe their thoughts on the labyrinth.

It seemed like a good idea and though not what had been planned or considered for this labyrinth, it felt right to allow. People wrote messages of hope and inspiration. There was encouragement and truth and a heart that showed up in many places. Peace was a natural expression and the messages of the journey began to be inserted around the labyrinth.

Where I had ideas of what would be added to this, walking and allowing the process to unfold is a bigger and better teacher. Since that time of inscription, others have naturally been drawn to share something on this without being directed. This labyrinth has a voice and expressive quality and it allows what first came out of the experience to continue.

A Monthly Ministry of Service

TLS 365 Experience #224
October 10, 2017

My labyrinth partner and I have been giving monthly walks for many years, but my favorite thing is to create customized walks for groups.

Use of the labyrinth in ritual can bring people together for common goals and purposes, get them on the same page, resolve conflicts, enable change, open minds. Helping people plan their walk and how it might fit into a larger program can help them clarify what they really want to accomplish and put the focus on the larger purpose.

Helping to plan an event that incorporates the labyrinth is a form of ministry all its own. It has its own labyrinthine path, where we find that people come back to us again and again with changes and new ideas as they walk the path of our shared creation. It is the walk before the walk.

Nothing beats watching the joy and discovery on the faces of the people in the group as they walk out of the labyrinth at such an event, having found their inspiration and consensus, having had a profound experience and hearing about their experiences.

Affirming and Exercising

TLS 365 Experience #180
Aug. 27, 2017

Illinois Labyirnth

When life is smoothly sailing along, the walk on the labyrinth is an exercise of gratitude and a reminder of the affirmations and actions that support efforts that create appreciable moments.

When life isn’t, the labyrinth provides a sanctuary for discovery.

It is through the different directions that appreciation, curiosity or relief grows and the steps taken are the catalyst to provide it.

Tiny Steps

TLS 365 Experience #167
Aug. 14, 2017

Preschool Children on the labyrinth When it comes to children on the labyrinth, their small steps speak volumes of education and entertainment for any who are lucky enough to be in earshot. Sharing an opportunity with our preschool children one afternoon, I was curious to see where their curiosity and natural exploration would lead them.

So I lead them to the labyrinth and asked them to tell me what they saw in looking at the labyrinth. The answers were a priceless collection of ideas. Then I asked them to explore and some ran, some were tentative and still others were remarkably care free. At first they formed a line and wiggled as they walked. Then they began to play a kind of snake game trailing after each other.

The more they moved, the more they became independent and soon there was a mixture of collective movement in independent style. I marveled at watching how they interacted with the labyrinth in their own way and how these little tiny beings took steps to explore every inch and make it their playground of discovery.

A Natural Playground

TLS 365 Experience #147
July 25, 2017

children on the labyrinthThe labyrinth is a playground.

So many take its design and purpose very intently, sacredly and seriously and while each has its purpose and place, what seems forgotten is how versatile the labyrinth can be. I like that it doesn’t have to be one way or one thing, it can be many things to many people.

I use it with young children in a care giving situation. There is a labyrinth in the park nearby and when we use the park for outdoor activities, the labyrinth often becomes a place to play. Sometimes there are dancing and movement activities, at other times we use its maze like quality to race, run and unwind. We play games on the labyrinth as it is a natural place for adventure. We play and pray together.

Through we also create much in collaboration, taking turns, inclusion, communication and creativity is explored so it also becomes a tool of learning. When we leave it up to kids, the labyrinth is a just a natural tool for discovery.

The Practice of Practice

TLS 365 Experience #87
May 26, 2017

I love the spontaneous nature of life and find myself resisting the routine or scheduled more and more. It feels contrary to tie myself down to an obligation when the flow of just being with is calling.

As I find myself following the call of the labyrinth, as if it is by magic,  I discover or rather remember something as I walk through its interesting array of turns. I see both the expected that is found in routine and the unexpected spontaneous in what I call each new direction. By the time I reach the center, I begin to realize that the scheduled or practice got me here to explore the spontaneous.

As I reflect I understand in small steps that the call is my curiosity and having a value for that is what schedules the time to honor it. I realize now the practice is what allows the flow to be more fully realized, step by step.

Fun

TLS 365 Experience #84
May 23, 2017

Look at me, zipping through the paths as I do the thing I don’t normally do. I run, skip and even dance a bit today being more myself than ever.

Not realizing, not thinking, just letting my heart soar as I become a sense of frolic making my movement not a walk, but a playful adventure of discovery.

This is fun.

IF… the way is lost

IF THE WAY IS LOST

If the way is lost in you

stop breathe pay attention.

Step again onto the path of your belonging

the path that calls from the center

of who you are and who you long to be.

Claim the journey that belongs

to your song, your story, your name.

Claim this day as the next step

this day as a promise

as a small hope that wakes up

something inside you that has been sleeping.

Step to the center of that hope

and let it surround you with light.

Let go of everything that doesn’t call your name

of all the baggage that keeps you in chains.

Let go of your certainty and your doubt

of your small plans and your grand designs.

Take this step

this one in front of you.

This breath this step is the only path

that brings you alive.
