A Path of Change

TLS 365 Experience #226
October 12, 2017

The leaves are changing and change is always a great topic for the labyrinth as it is something that is constant and flowing yet so hard to accept for what it brings. We offered an all campus walk and made it all about how each sees and comprehends change on the inward walk, how each invites it or resists it and the results in the center and what change each would like to make on the exit walk as a result of their experience.

We left a writing board up for people to write out their ideas and make their personal declarations for the calendar year at school. It opened up doors and avenues for our administrative boards to get behind the idea of what individuals were seeking and a place for us to engage our entire campus on one platform with individual directions. Throughout the year we will keep tabs on the progress, create events to support those ideas and keep it an open running dialogue in our classes.

Refocused Fun

TLS 365 Experience #169
Aug. 16, 2017

I love my kids and am generally a fun spirited parent, though this was one of those days when I had drawn the last of my patience and knew I was in great need of some alone time and unable to time myself out, so I took the kids to the park.

They generally want to engage me or be acknowledged as they play, though on this day I really just wanted them to play without need of my participation. I thought I would walk the labyrinth while they played on the swings and the slide next to it, though they seemed to find a sudden interest in the labyrinth and were already racing though it.

Rather than completely give into despair, I called them back and ask them to consider how many ways we could walk a labyrinth and challenged them to walk in one way and out another and then to continue with new and different ways until they could not find any more. As we all began to walk, I found my stride in a comfortable way appreciating my own walk as they sped by me with there own intentions lost in the challenge.

I began my walk and instead of the quiet reflection I thought I would focus upon, I found myself considering walking sideways, backward, singing and skipping. I walked along and more thoughts popped up in a similar pattern and as amused as I found it, my patience had shifted and my amusement grew. Watching my daughter attempt to summersault her way around the labyrinth and my son making faces throughout made me laugh and become just as inventive. Grateful for the shift and focus on fun.

The Voice of the Labyrinth

TLS 365 Experience #161
Aug. 8, 2017

I got stuck today. Ideas that normally seem to flow were not and my focus was off. I couldn’t seem to concentrate for any period of time and even my focus could not seem to be narrowed down.

I picked up the finger labyrinth and thought it might shift my focus as it often is a place where I find new direction. ¬†As my finger traced the path I began to feel a heaviness in my body and as I circled around, a sense of slowness crept in. By the time I reached the center I recognized how tired I was. The reflected return brought awareness to my breathing and as it’s slowness created a calm peaceful appreciation, a choice presented itself. In my attempts to accomplish a number of things, I had not been enjoying adequate sleep, my body was simply tired and I had not honored it’s message.

Not until the finger walk, did I stop to realize fully, the very thing that would bring back focus, function and creativity, sleep. The voice of the labyrinth is found when we engage with it.
