Greater than Grief

Day 10

January 10, 2019
Month of Beginnings
Quarter of Consciousness
Let’s Walk the World, a focus of contribution

  1. For Today’s Walk:
Do you have an individual, group or community in mind as you begin a labyrinth? How do they benefit from your experience?
  2. For Today’s Experience:
Observe your conscious ways of sharing by thinking of others in your walk today.
  3. Share Today:   Share your message
When we collectively offer the ways to begin, someone sees a new idea, thought or experience to enjoy. Today, share images, art, ideas, designs, tips, facilitations, building strategies, ideas from your book, poems, teachings, etc.

Today’s Experience:

Grief Labyrinth Design by E. ChaseI have always been drawn to labyrinth but when i lost my husband of 36 years to Esophageal cancer only 6 weeks from diagnosis I was devastated. A friend invited me to a labyrinth walk at here church and I went and found peace for the first time since his loss.

I found that my walking and creating labyrinths I was able to start healing and in my healing I am able to bring labyrinths to others to help them.  I have created a 12 foot canvas labyrinth and about 15 lap labyrinths in the last year that I take different places to allow others the chance to experience the life changing powers of the labyrinth.

I have been taking my labyrinths to parks, the library and just last week to a Metaphysical shop so people can experience them.
I also will be offering Make Your own Labyrinth classes so others can have a labyrinth at home to use.

I am seeing labyrinths in so much of life now. I am learning to look at life as a metaphor and how the labyrinth mirrors that in many ways. I try to get people together at least once a month for a labyrinth walk.

Uniting in Service in the State of Evolution

Day 220  August 8
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Application
In The Month of: States of Being United

The labyrinth of today is one of service to its community. The plaque that sits at its base denotes it as the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. It is a reminder that each walk is a beginning and an end with another beginning at the ending.  The labyrinth is located at the institution of St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral in Oklahoma City in Oklahoma. It has been in service since 1904 serving it’s community well and in 1995, it became a triage site for the bombing of the Alfred Murrah building, which was only two blocks away. The blast was so powerful that it blew out portions of the church as well. In spite of all it served to bring the community back together in service of body and spirit and the inclusion of the labyrinth at this location made the service one more united in purpose.

The state of Oklahoma as a labyrinth imageDevastation and joy are two sides of the same side of life, interpreting our circumstances more fully in a wholistic way. When we walk the labyrinth we discover this more and more from the different perspectives that come together to form our thoughts and elicit our feelings. What often erupts allows for an old ideal to fall away and a new evolved one to take its place. May the journeys we travel reflect this well

Daily Insights : On this 220th day…
Explore the ways in which the things that fell apart made way for something new and improved to grow today in your walk.

Opportunities for August

As we traveled the globe in search of exploration and returned with an abundance of realizing the consecutive connectives of the world in June and July, we touched the mere surface of our planet through the eyes of the labyrinth.  In the month of August, we continue the explorative nature looking for what insight brings us to unite. It can be a  discovery of the united purpose that we connect with others, or in the way we bring who we are with what we can and want to do.  What August brings is a focus of how the labyrinth brings state of being united, within ourselves within the United States. Send along the labyrinths, programs, art, and offerings within the United States that you feel best represents this for daily postings.

  1. What Unites
Reach out and share the unique labyrinths in this month within the United States that serve to unite. We look for the unique design, interesting purpose, connected message, in the labyrinth or in the ways we share with others in message or program, art, design and education applied. Share your ideas, programs, purpose images and experiences at the 365 Experience on the TLS website providing some detail of why you design, share, create, build or simply walk, who benefits and how it helps us unite. Personal insight or National perspectives are welcome.
  2. What brings Insight
As we take each day of the 31 available in August exploring what brings us insight with our selves or as a nation through the paths of the Labyrinth.  This quarter focuses on the ways we apply the insight we gain and as we are united with our own insights, may we use them as well in a way that unites us personally and also purposefully with others as a nation united.
  3. Join the online  Mid Month Dialogues Call on Friday August 15th at NOON PST
Be curious, research and share what you know of unique United States labyrinths, the people, the programs, the designs, the resources or simply the desires in the first half of the month and apply something that you find unique to your own life walk. In Marvelous Memorial

Day 207  July 26
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Application
In The Month of: Exploration & Return

an image of the Carol Shields Memorial Labyrinth

The Carol Shields Memorial Labyrinth in Kings Park Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Photo Credits: ft3, architecture design

The Manitoba Labyrinth Network was asked to join forces to honor the legendary work of  Carol Shields. She was a power house of a woman who grew up not far from where I did in Illinois. As she grew into her destiny, Toronto and then Manitoba became destinations for her explorations of life. She found it in her writing and through novels, championing the spirit of writers as a renowned international author and Manitoba’s only Pulitzer Prize winner. She has received 16 doctoral awards, the Queen Elizabeth Golden Jubilee Award and elevated to Chancellor of the University of Winnipeg.

In 2009 the design of the labyrinth emerged in honor of Carol Shields in Kings Park, an area of Winnipeg, Manitoba  with a memorial garden, a quote wall and a versatilely designed labyrinth. The design uses some of the shrubs from her novel, Larry’s Party,  about a protagonist who becomes a maze and labyrinth designer after visiting the English Hampton Court labyrinth. The labyrinth design is also gently sloped in the center, which is said to promote the healing effects of relaxation. It seems Carol’s spirit is within the walk, still aiding and assisting other’s as was her abundant natural gift.

There was much thought and care in designing and implementing this labyrinth that continues to give and its very existence somehow seems to emulate the giving nature of  this remarkable woman. We are fortunate to have explored the values displayed throughout in this voyage of Canada. If you didn’t know her, she lives on in hearts, memories, publications, labyrinths and in this memorial.

On this 207th day…
Explore the legacy of your steps in the labyrinth, what has it yielded and how has it inspired?

Note how these designs are  outside the box of traditional design and how they might take us outside the design we’ve been living in.  They can be quite diverse or small simple adjustments that make it different too. From Austria to Portland… the second half begins!
  2. Grow Local…. Bring the World to you
Let your walks, programs, designs, creations and simple enthusiasm be inspired by what the world offers us with fresh ways to create new experiences in the 30 days of this month. There are a small number of stone labyrinths found on the coastal areas of Estonia’s northern border that bear a similar history of purpose as the ones in Sweden, though trekking to the southern part of this country into holy ground, the labyrinth at Otepää is found at St. Mary’s Church and invites a regular walk for spiritual balance.

In the lower eastern area of Estonia is the Viia Jaani Farm that celebrates the human condition with sounds and healing offerings. It is also the host of the esoteric Labyrinth festival.

When exploring, a new find is often just around the corner and when fully invested new perspectives and dimensions can expand our understanding and evolve our education. That is what this year long experience is all about. When we grow what we know we evolve our own conditioned existence and step into something that provides us with insight, education and new ways to apply our understanding.

On this 175th day…
Explore what might be just around the corner from your discovery on the labyrinth today, what might expand what you understand?

Sacred Focus

Day 128: May 8
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Education
In The Month of: Celebration

New England Wooded Labyrinth Sharing from Karen S of New England, Certified Labyrinth Walk Facilitator:

The labyrinth keeps me centered, and at the center, I usually complete my daily Reiki practice. Even before I began working with Reiki energy, I have been drawn to completing rituals or meditations that honor the elements and/or the kingdoms of the natural world at the center.

I can feel the peaceful, accepting spirit of the space surround me as I complete those rituals. As I return to the outside world, I usually carry with me some insight about my life and the path I am meant to walk.

Each new day deserves appreciation for what it is, and that my time in the spaces I hold as sacred is finite, so I intentionally bring my full focus to the time I am spending there. When I walk with others, I can see the spark of the divine in them and feel the power of our shared presence. The power of shared labyrinth walks holds such potential for healing and I am glad that The Global Healing Response was instituted for this purpose. A celebration of the sacred walk.

On this 128th day…
Celebrate your sacred moments within and observe what it brings out today.

The Month of Celebration, Appreciation and Realization
May’s Focus: Celebration

Life is a celebration to explore in the next 31 days. With the idea of walking the labyrinth and its tri-focus on releasing, receiving and reflecting, let’s shift the perspective to one that walks in with appreciation, finds the honest realization from each day and walks out in celebration.  Observe what 31 days of this focus might reflect and how it elevates our life condition.

Four focus points to expand your celebration of this month’s experience:

  1. Share your ideas, in your personal experiences, how you share the labyrinth with others, art, design or method of construction or in other ways that it may be utilized. Let others know about this daily experience and opportunity by sharing it. Find us on this blog and on the Labyrinth Societies Facebook page
  2. Join our Mid Month Dialogues on May 15th at 2pm CST for a lively look at what you have created and will create in the idea of celebration. This month’s theme was a direct result of our last month’s Mid Month Dialogue!
  3. Participate in the daily opportunity of this educational focus of  your personal journey, how you lead, teach or share with others, and what you create for contribution or purpose with this theme.
  4. Remember that our theme is about finding our greater capacities, abilities and true realities in being honest with our potential. We focus on what we can do as it is inherently more useful and productive.

Community Love Walk

TLS 365 Experience #274
November 29, 2017

Walk of Community, Walk of love, light, healing and blessings There was such love for our friend in the community beyond family and friends that we all discovered quickly, as people began to show up at the hospital making our private family waiting room grow so much that we had to be moved to a larger space.  We waited with many emotions present as our loved one clung to life support and as it became news, more people appeared.

As there was a labyrinth outside, a few of us decided to create a walk of prayer and hope and invited those in the waiting room to join us. We asked for all to have hope, send healing wishes and blessings with light and I have to think what it did for our friend, it also did for those who walked. They had to allow and bring it up in themselves to send it on and on this very tragic and scary day, we created community for our community member.

We are so grateful for this labyrinth that brought us together in such a purposeful and special way. It gave us a place to do something with the grief and a way to turn it around into something better for everyone. I have to think that this body of love and light of hope made all the difference as our loved one found her way back to us.

Hope, Remembrance and Growth

TLS 365 Experience #195
September 11, 2017

On the tenth anniversary of the attack of September 11th, there was a Hope Fest in our town. It was  a way to emerge our growth through the largeness of a positive and lifting experience that we were finding a readiness for as a nation.  Asked to offer a program with the labyrinth, it seemed a good way to appreciate how the concept of hope had actually been present in each of the past years.

We had a beautiful tall glass urn in the center of the room that held a candle and encircled by 11 small candles that sat in between the two labyrinths I had brought. One would symbolize then, and the other now. We sat in silent reflection for 11 minutes hearing the clear ring of the tinghshaw instrument resounding a vibrant chord that broke the stillness. This was followed with a few softly spoken sentences that reminded of where hope had actually been present in the way that people gathered, remembered, cared and shared.

After each reading a smaller of candle would be lit and we sat in silent reflection of the moment and message before the tingshaw cleared the air for a graduate message of hope throughout.   As we reached the 11th minute to signal the coming year of Hope, all were invited to sing out a tonal articulation that was choir like to hear.

As the final message was read and the last candle lit,  the instructions were to move to either the labyrinth of then or now when they were ready. Each might walk with their own appreciation, understanding or experience of hope. It was a powerful and moving experience and the shares were rich and defined with what hope stood for in the ideals of a nation growing through its pain.

Today on this 16th Anniversary, there is a small walk planned. Like every walk I have done since the 10th anniversary, blessings for hope, rememberance and growth are always a part of the walk, though this tenth anniversary will always be remembered for its powerful lifting message.

Connected to Creation

TLS 365 Experience #34
April 3, 2017

At least four times a year, we set up the Peace/Shalom labyrinth in the hospital chapel for staff, patients and the community to use.

There have been numerous healing experiences shared and profound reactions for some of the patients I have worked with.

The responses are positive and for me being so connected to the creation of this labyrinth feeds my soul and guides me to keep sharing with everyone.

The Labyrinth, A Patient Provider

TLS 365 Experience  #10
March 10, 2017

A Patient Provider

When the call is clear, the labyrinth appears!

For over two weeks life has offered familial concern and life support. There exists much bliss in family gathering, though overt concern by all for the life of our young soul suddenly in a deciding transition. It’s one of those things that no one expects.

Just knowing a labyrinth was present on hospital grounds was a comforting way to reach out and imagine the path for the reassuring moments it provided when choosing not to leave the interior environs. Witnessing another walk with their own story, from a respectful distance, also reminded me I was not alone in my hope. Walking it gave my feet purpose as each circuit created new gratitude to all involved in the care and healing from the immediate to the celestial.

Inspiring in it’s many ways to walk. Knowing, yet still realizing the greatness of its provisions, ready and available in service. Remembering to walk a circuit of gratitude for its presence, and all who brought it forth.
