Ancient

Day 285  October 12
In The Year of Honest Living
In The Quarter of: Contribution
In The Month of: Message, Metaphor and Magic

partial image of red dirt and stone labyrinth and metaphor of wizened ways
Topic: Ancient

Wizened ways of wondering footsteps on an ancient trail that talks as we walk.

The  Message:

We look back to the far past in our history to reference the times that have shaped civilization. From our view of the present, the path leaves a trail, as it is easier to see what we’ve done than what we will do. Where history is an academic past of documentation, ancient implies an origin of imagination of our beginnings as sources for accuracy were few. Ancient ways are filled with unique wisdom, as if the slate were clear of innovation or any need to improve. At a time when we have so much, our ancient roots originated concepts, and seemed a much wiser time, with less.

The Magic:

Each labyrinth walk can be a new beginning with lineage to an ancient walk. Moving in step with the years of other footsteps who have traveled this way before, we are but innovators of a wizened time. We move, listen and respond to the soul of ancestral roots and the unrealized future. Remembering in the walk of this day, that this path of simple complexity yields a message to relate a time of before to present moment, and regard a new beginning from an ancient past. With magical reverence we may unlock the awe.

Daily Insights : On this 285th day…
The ancient conjures a natural curiosity, walk with it.

Thresholds

Day 115: April 25
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Education
In The Month of: Amusement

The labyrinth of doorwaysWaiting brought attention to the environs of the room in which participants acted as waitees, each with a unique way to pass the time. It seems when we wait we forget the opportunity to simply communicate. We have the commonality of why we are waiting and what we are waiting for, though engaging people into simple conversation can sometimes seem a challenge. Finding no need to push beyond the boundaries of receptivity, the mind can be entertained with an engaging experience of imagination in the use of what surrounds us that we don’t often see. What became present was the doorway.  59 rings displayed the natural origin of the wood in age of the hallowed tree that it was produced from and amused by the circular nature of the rings, the design of the doorway became a new threshold experience for the labyrinth.

Passing time with amusing pursuits invited the creativity to see beyond mere rings and into the wisdom of this doorway. It brought opportunities to discover more beyond its stationary position in the wall and left to imagination and inspiration of what possibilities might lay just beyond the door frame. Always inspired by doorways and the invitation to live on the other side differently, each doorway holds that opportunity. Yet, why wait to go through with waiting being the operative word for the day; seize the potential of play and beyond the mind of design and like this new doorway, waiting can be a productive and potential building bit of amusing insight. The labyrinth can be a doorway to unlimited possibilities.

On this 115th day…
Step over the threshold into the labyrinth today and notice what is opened, how wide its opened and what is welcomed. Notice the doorways of your day afterwards for an insightful day of possibility

April's Banner Year of Living Honestly 2018April’s Focus

Let this month unfurl your creativity, spontaneity and jocularity. It feels good to feel good and while we have been conditioned to shush our good times, let the labyrinth be our own private creation station of amusement, enjoyment and playful experiments. This month educate with amusement and see how much farther you get. Have fun and be creative.  We have three opportunities to education your potential with amusement this month that involves either your personal walk, your ability to design and how much you can learn by sharing. On your Mark, Get Set…Go!

  1. Innovate – Walk Amused
In the 30 days that grace this month, play with the way you personally experience the labyrinth. Let this season of education be one of personal bests and enjoy finding a new way to be innovative, creative, inspired and amused in your personal experiences. I’d love to see what you come up with!
    Please share your wonderful experiences!

2. Create – Design Inspired
To date I have created 95 different labyrinth creations and designs since the beginning of the year, let that inspire you to create something new this month that is inspiring and firing for your imagination. Einstein said that playing with ideas was the highest form of research and this is an education for all of us.  As you walk in new ways, share your designs as I have done with mine last year and this. Perfection isn’t what we are after, amusement is! I look forward to seeing what you come up with! I will toss out lots of inspiring ideas… stay tuned daily.
Share away and become a glad designer instead of a mad one!

3. Relate – Share with Care
One of the best ways to learn anything is having to teach or explain it to someone else. Whether you facilitate others, teach or simply share with a few, spend the month discovering amusing new ways to help others get more out of their walk with a lighter attitude and a more earnest enjoyment in what you share. Anything you want to know more about, share and this month share with a fun flair and notice how much more you actually begin to understand. You just might find a side of yourself forgotten. To receive all that, be a great giver.
Share what you discover!

Sweet Paths of Imagination

Day 106: April 16
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Education
In The Month of: Amusement

The Inner meander of Candy Land meets the labyrinthInspired by the game of Candy Land while playing games with youth, the amusement of remembering the simplicity of old fashioned board games rose. Designed in 1948 by a woman with polio, it was tested out in hospital wards with children before being introduced to the public. Having created a variety of life affirming games, some with boards and spinners, I decided to replicate the game of Candy Land after our discussion and laid out the labyrinth while participants made up the various sweet spots and ominous traps while a few others decorated the sides of a box for dice. In short order we had a make shift game using the labyrinth as the path. We altered the experience with a variety of movement techniques to find our way to the center, alternative ideas of what we might do at the sweet spots and collaborative strategies at the places where questionable conundrums came to pass. Lot of variety and much fun. It inspired a number of other activities that could be experienced with the labyrinth. The inside of this labyrinth’s center meander is a replica of the game board path of Candy Land.

Play is an essential of life and an amusing way to educate ourselves on any subject with more experiential hands on appreciation. We have more creativity and insight when we let our imagination take hold and often find much more than we bargained for. When we allow ourselves to play with life, we find an honest appreciation in our capabilities and in play we realize much more than we would were we to read, research, hear or memorize.

On this 106th day…
How might you play with the labyrinth today?

Love Review

Day 59: February 28
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Awareness
In The Month of: Love

Enjoy the last day of this short month as a Love Review. We have had four solid weeks of looking through the lens of love to explore the qualities at the heart of honesty. When we love what we do, what we have and what we are, we do more…and in better ways. That is what we are after in this quest of discovery.

This month in looking for the heart, I found it in design. Creating a number of different designs with different materials reminded me of the vivid imagination and spontaneous creativity that seems to frequent the days that hold the most fascination, feel good and inspire a natural curiosity. When in this place, it is at the heart and core of what I love to be and do. In the two points of focus for this month, this combined both in the synchronicity of mind and design in looking for the heart and feeling the essence of love.

Today’s walk was a love walk, full of gratitude and realization of what the past 28 days has offered. As you take to your path today, consider how this daily focus has opened or awaken some abilities and what type of hearts synchronistically opened or showed up for you.

—————————————————————————————

A suggestion to walk with:

On this 60th day…
Walk in review of your month’s discoveries and explorations, becoming aware of the result of the fullness of your daily experience.

————————————————————————————–

February’s Focus

As it is the second month of the year, enjoy two opportunities… discovery and realization.

  1. Discover your Love capacity:
This month’s 28 days will focus on how we are loving the moments we are creating. Learning to be “in love” with our focus, it expands who we are beyond the partnered relational aspects and into the focus of loving what we offer the world, who we are in community, relating at a higher level to everything and everyone; and most significantly,  elevating the relationship we have with ourselves. Prepare for a wonderful experience of exercising the power of love with the freedom of honesty to realize a greater look at possibilities and potential n a delightful way. Discover how capable you are!

2. Realize synchronous evidence:
Inspired by the variety of heart shaped labyrinths, this month capture your experiences with images of the heart. Be on the look out for where the synchronicity of the moments where your heart is in focus and then look around to see where you can find the shape of a heart in symbol. Your awareness will expand and you just might be surprised to find that when we look with an open heart, we can find it in reference near by. It does require a bit of imagination, though the findings are wonderfully worth it. Share all the heart shaped labyrinth images you find with images, links or comments and I will be happy to post the images and moments.

Imagination

Day 58: February 27
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Awareness
In The Month of: Love

Describing the simple nature of the labyrinth today to a few interested souls, it was a lesson in conveyance. Some had ideas of the maze, others shared they already knew as they had participated in a walk in the past, while others found this new information. It was a discussion without visual imagery available and in this, picking up on the idea of imagination became a wonderful way to open the doors a little wider with possibility. Having a number of different ways to describe its use and purpose, depending upon the audience, there is always a general communication that everyone can relate to well.

Asking them to close their eyes, an impromptu labyrinth meditation came to mind where visualizations could become volumous and what might be received in the experience could be significant to each in their own way. Using the breath as the path, the labyrinth had opportunity to enter the individual in a virtual walk of imagination. Each had a different connection and a unique response to share as we completed. It just may have been the most honest labyrinth walk ever created and one that allowed for the individual to experience as their own personal pilgrimage in a heartfelt manner.

—————————————————————————————

A suggestion to walk with:

On this 59th day…
Walk the labyrinth of your own mind tracing the steps and relating to it differently with imagination as a guide.

Mistakes and Improvements

Day 19: January 19
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Awareness
In The Month of: Definition
After yesterday’s walk of imagination, I walked over to the partial labyrinth with a bit of paint and added a line to the border of what I now call the imagination labyrinth. I look forward to adding more each day that I have the opportunity for free early morning time. There’s something of a quiet satisfaction in this. Today I reflected on this and in walking home on an alternative route, took a concrete pathway that extends for two blocks between the two subdivisions of homes. This area has a winding walkway, a variety of trees landscaped and a plethora of small red stone that covers everything in between the walls that border the homes.

As I walked along, I came upon another of these large slabs of concrete sitting vacant in the expanse of the area. It was similar to the one I had just come from and it occurred that there were probably similar slabs all over the city in these walkways. What would you do with sudden blank canvas that presented itself? For me, I wondered how the city might benefit from a collaborative effort of adding designs for a variety of purposes to these slabs and how a labyrinth in so many locations might give way to increasing meditation, problem solving and connection, just to name a few of the benefits, in a subtle simple way.

I had wanted to find an honest way to connect as a transplant to this community now that I am staying, and this seems to be a worthy contribution to make it possible. Praying past the politics on the walk today, I began to outline the structure for a proposal in my mind. This is a defining moment of honest contribution from an honest mistake that is being rectified in a better way…. and it feels wonderful!

There comes the moment of honest realization that just because you can do a thing, is it necessary?

A suggestion to walk with:

Today observe what mistakes have honestly improved your circumstances.

Defining Lines of Imagination

Day 18: January 18
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Awareness
In The Month of: Definition

The call for an early morning walk brought an experience of what I would call a semi labyrinth and an opportunity. There seemed to be a directive in my steps and fond remembrance to come to this vacant area where just over a year ago I created a peace labyrinth on parachute material.

At the time a tarp was used underneath, though a surprising realization of paint where the outer edges bled through to leave left an impression of surprise to myself as well as on the concrete surface below.  I thought to repaint the surface at the time, though with predicted rains assumed it would most likely wash the traces away. The honesty defined in this moment brought forth a happy and higher regard for the durability of the paint used and simultaneously,  a responsibility of restoration to leave it a place better than when found.

Presented before me today was a walk of partiality with a charge to restore the area to its former status or to develop it in a better way.  I made the most out of the experience by deciding to walk right into the dilemma and use what was available.  It was an honest walk and a veritable look at the footprints we create. While I could walk the clear lines of the outer edges, the internal lines called for memory and imagination. What were clear were the external memories of my labors, and what was unclear was the imaginative internal structure.

As soon as I stepped into the imaginative uncharted pathways, I knew I would develop it to a more purposeful use rather than a mere resurfacing. My thoughts and actions often tend to lean toward not just making a place better for having found it, but better because of the way we experience and inhabit it. Blocks away from a school and historically vacant, a labyrinth here might be put to better use with this addition than without. I realized I could bring a little paint at a time and enjoy the unfolding process of the creation over time in it’s gradual development.

A suggestion to walk with:

Create a way to make something better today because you were there.

Applying Design

TLS 365 Experience #264
November 19, 2017

The structure and form of the labyrinth have offered an outline and shape for a program that has been matriculating over the years. In this way the program is a labyrinth that unwinds its message brings us to an evaluation and then gives the opportunity to prove its truth before it ends. The imagination is a wonderful thing to stir up on the winding journey and an evolution to discover in the spiraling of inner and outer qualities.

I took our class onto the labyrinth to discover the different relationships they might discover that are similar and the discussions yielded a marvelous awareness and realization of how many either live the labyrinth regularly or see themselves as a labyrinth of design.

The Game is On Foot

TLS 365 Experience #100
June 8, 2017

The round stones of the Theosophical Society Labyrinth

The Theosophical Society labyrinth makes me want to play.

The round stones that make up the borders bring the idea of the circle wholly into place. Though with so many laid out next to each other, I always want to hop onto the stones instead of the path. The adult in me stays on the path, though the kid in me is leaping from stone to stone playing the imaginary game that I seem to understand will take me on to an adventure and back again.

I’ve hosted a number of programs at this location, and can’t think why I haven’t yet created a game out of the experience?   I imagine it would be both educational and playful.

A Willing Walk

TLS 365 Experience #73
May 12, 2017

Years ago, I wrote an article on the value of finger walking the labyrinth.

I had been busy all week long and finding it harder to maintain a daily walk. As I sat enviously looking out the window, the labyrinth was sitting in the yard and I put my finger up to the window screen and found myself walking the labyrinth, right in the middle of my busy schedule. There is always a way it seems!

Today, a similar experience was occuring as I set up for a retreat. The labyrinth was in the distance, though when I went inside the cabin, I could view it clearly through the upper window and amusingly took the time to fingerwalk it.

There is always a way when the willingness is open.
