Thresholds

Day 115: April 25
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Education
In The Month of: Amusement

The labyrinth of doorwaysWaiting brought attention to the environs of the room in which participants acted as waitees, each with a unique way to pass the time. It seems when we wait we forget the opportunity to simply communicate. We have the commonality of why we are waiting and what we are waiting for, though engaging people into simple conversation can sometimes seem a challenge. Finding no need to push beyond the boundaries of receptivity, the mind can be entertained with an engaging experience of imagination in the use of what surrounds us that we don’t often see. What became present was the doorway.  59 rings displayed the natural origin of the wood in age of the hallowed tree that it was produced from and amused by the circular nature of the rings, the design of the doorway became a new threshold experience for the labyrinth.

Passing time with amusing pursuits invited the creativity to see beyond mere rings and into the wisdom of this doorway. It brought opportunities to discover more beyond its stationary position in the wall and left to imagination and inspiration of what possibilities might lay just beyond the door frame. Always inspired by doorways and the invitation to live on the other side differently, each doorway holds that opportunity. Yet, why wait to go through with waiting being the operative word for the day; seize the potential of play and beyond the mind of design and like this new doorway, waiting can be a productive and potential building bit of amusing insight. The labyrinth can be a doorway to unlimited possibilities.

On this 115th day…
Step over the threshold into the labyrinth today and notice what is opened, how wide its opened and what is welcomed. Notice the doorways of your day afterwards for an insightful day of possibility

April's Banner Year of Living Honestly 2018April’s Focus

Let this month unfurl your creativity, spontaneity and jocularity. It feels good to feel good and while we have been conditioned to shush our good times, let the labyrinth be our own private creation station of amusement, enjoyment and playful experiments. This month educate with amusement and see how much farther you get. Have fun and be creative.  We have three opportunities to education your potential with amusement this month that involves either your personal walk, your ability to design and how much you can learn by sharing. On your Mark, Get Set…Go!

  1. Innovate – Walk Amused
In the 30 days that grace this month, play with the way you personally experience the labyrinth. Let this season of education be one of personal bests and enjoy finding a new way to be innovative, creative, inspired and amused in your personal experiences. I’d love to see what you come up with!
    Please share your wonderful experiences!

2. Create – Design Inspired
To date I have created 95 different labyrinth creations and designs since the beginning of the year, let that inspire you to create something new this month that is inspiring and firing for your imagination. Einstein said that playing with ideas was the highest form of research and this is an education for all of us.  As you walk in new ways, share your designs as I have done with mine last year and this. Perfection isn’t what we are after, amusement is! I look forward to seeing what you come up with! I will toss out lots of inspiring ideas… stay tuned daily.
Share away and become a glad designer instead of a mad one!

3. Relate – Share with Care
One of the best ways to learn anything is having to teach or explain it to someone else. Whether you facilitate others, teach or simply share with a few, spend the month discovering amusing new ways to help others get more out of their walk with a lighter attitude and a more earnest enjoyment in what you share. Anything you want to know more about, share and this month share with a fun flair and notice how much more you actually begin to understand. You just might find a side of yourself forgotten. To receive all that, be a great giver.
Share what you discover!

Formulating Your Year

Day 108: April 18
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Education
In The Month of: Amusement

The Tax LabyrinthThe tax year officially ends as of yesterday with the due date for filing returns. In the happy aftermath of relief or returns, how many played with a few deductions, had the joy of discovering loopholes or  got excited over new exemptions?  It feels good to find new ways to have fun with your forms and make the most of what could otherwise prove to be a taxing experience.

This is a design created last year when the filing frenzy became a little too much, taking time out to play with the 1040 form, it solved a few puzzles with a finger walk and became a way to remain true to the process while developing creativity in the confines. Inspiration as well as insight showed up to make the filing experience one that was honest, satisfying and amusingly complete.

On this 108th day…
Walk in the aftermath of your taxing experience, reflect and consider what you might do to be more creative in the coming year?

The Inspired Uninspiring

Day 95: April 5
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Education
In The Month of: Amusement

The linear labyrinth of NebraskaNebraska is the gateway between two important personal destinations. Selected for its time saving feature, the duration from one point along Interstate 80 from the Colorado border to the Iowa border is a straight point from end to end. On either side of the expressway lay open fields with an ever expansive open sky that appears to make it last forever. The state of humor might well be Nebraska as the drive from west coast to the midwest encounters the uneventful nature along this route and creates cause for imagination to occupy the monotony of what seems an endless voyage. The view from the expressway appears to be a moving picture that simply does not change for just under 400 miles.

Finding the humor in this day was discovered in finding inspiration in the uninspired surroundings. Drawing a labyrinth included the straight six hour journey, though realization of the spiral occurred in the use of the off ramps that provided a circular reference for leaving the highway to refuel, spiraling back  afterwards to resume the trip. The off ramps provided opportunities for food, sanitary necessities and stretching the body and with each, what seemed dull, suddenly had lively possibilities.  The double spiral at the top suggests a centering point before returning again…. or freedom to the other worlds of Iowa, Colorado and beyond though only temporarily as there will be a return home again.  The repeating process through the double spiral and back down the straight highway of spiraling off ramp diversions awaits when ready or time permits a brand new path elsewhere.

Making inspiration out of the uninspiring has made an amusing difference in perceptions of Nebraska.

On this 95th day…
Discover an imaginative way to walk the same path differently. Be amused by your imagination and the variety of ways you find.

In the Beginning

Day 23: January 23
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Awareness
In The Month of: Definition

In the beginning, there is a point of intention, though sometimes we don’t always notice it. We want to walk, practice or just be in the experience and so we come to the walk in whatever way that serves us knowing, though not always knowing the truth that sits with us. We may ask a question and have clarity around it and walk to discover, though in that beginning moment the answer is already understood.

The walk serves to support, open and supply us with evidence that helps us to open and realize more perspective or reason beyond any doubts we might be questioning.

The walk we take helps us to believe more in our own ideas, abilities and inspirations. Each step becomes a clarity of purpose and the more we are open to it, willing and ready, the more likely what is at our beginning can be more visible to us in the ending. Our walk exercises our belief, truth and trust in what we know and in our own way, we find out the subtle honest nuances of who we are and what we are capable of in the steps we take.

Today’s walk in the desert was realized in the steps taken, solidified in the turns made and transitioned into a trust in reaching  the center as a place of holding space.  It deepened with perspective and materialized in the facets of realization that now sparkled with variety by the time the walk came to a close. At the end what was true in the beginning  remained and what accompanied it was an honest evaluation of its full value.

A suggestion to walk with:

How is your beginning more realized at the end?

TLS 365 Experience 2018: The Year of Living Honestly
Whether it’s a daily walk, teaching others, sharing an experience, expressions of art, building or design, we explore the questions of what brings us to honesty in our use of the labyrinth.

In a world of emerging truth, the labyrinth is a great experience to discover more of what is right and true about ourselves and humanity. Join us in sharing the honest moments it reveals.

Chapters of Inspiration

TLS 365 Experience #258
November 13, 2017

We might never know who we affect when we share the stories and experiences of the labyrinth and it isn’t really important to know, more to share and grow in what we know by doing so. Sometimes, we do get a glimpse of the difference it makes when we share.

A client who was curious about the labyrinth, met me on a quiet local labyrinth and found that was where she wanted to grow in our time together, so we met regularly and used the labyrinth in our understanding as its location offered a place of refuge where we were undisturbed. Over the time together, many ideas were raised and issues resolved. I could see how the results of the walks played into our sessions regularly. As she moved successfully into her own steps in life, guided by her own resilience and understanding, I would receive messages from time to time about success moments, though not much about the labyrinth or if she still used it.

So it was both surprising and delightful to hear from her in depth, learning how she had enjoyed the labyrinth in our sessions but fallen away from regular use in her daily life. It wasn’t until she began writing and fell into a slump that she remembered one of our technique’s and by using it, found herself back out on the labyrinth. As she walked, the last three chapters for her book were revealed. Even greater,  she realized now the depth of some of our earlier work and how the labyrinth was much more than a tool for coping and has since found inspiration a way to walk.

Bonafide Fun

TLS 365 Experience #245
October 31, 2017

The Labyrinth of Chicken Bones, Cobwebs and things that Go Bump in the night... LAT2010It’s always fun to work with kids, they have wonderful imaginations and I often find their creativity inspiring as it is playful, limitless and speaks to their truth.  As Halloween approached I asked a teacher to gather chicken bones and secured more at the local butcher shop during the month. Chicken bones tend to be small so work well in the building of labyrinth in pieces. The teacher brought the kids into our nearby center for an afternoon of discovery with the idea of appreciating the imagination and inspiration and in a world that can be unnerving for kids;  finding the fun of tethering on the edge of the unknown.

On dark table tops the illuminated circles brought light to work with as the kids played a game in teams and got to pick out the bones from a bucket as they guessed correctly. We played a variety of games with the bones and part of the fun of the day was in building a labyrinth with them.taking away the myth and the monster to add magic and meaning.

The Voice of the Labyrinth

TLS 365 Experience #229
October 15, 2017

Expressions on the labyrinth, a voice for the labyrinth. LAT2012Having painted the outline of a classical design onto a canvas cloth for a walk, I had intended to add other features after the walk completed. There was much in release and discovery in this walk that was offered and participants in the walk asked if they could inscribe their thoughts on the labyrinth.

It seemed like a good idea and though not what had been planned or considered for this labyrinth, it felt right to allow. People wrote messages of hope and inspiration. There was encouragement and truth and a heart that showed up in many places. Peace was a natural expression and the messages of the journey began to be inserted around the labyrinth.

Where I had ideas of what would be added to this, walking and allowing the process to unfold is a bigger and better teacher. Since that time of inscription, others have naturally been drawn to share something on this without being directed. This labyrinth has a voice and expressive quality and it allows what first came out of the experience to continue.

Keep Walking

TLS 365 Experience #208
September 24, 2017

I walk the labyrinth for many reasons: to release the stresses of the day, to work out knotty problems, to gain insights and ideas, to relax, to share in community, to heal my heart when it is broken.

The most powerful times seem to happen when I am lost, when I feel that somehow I have lost my way or can’t find my “next step.” The labyrinth reminds me that we can’t always see very far ahead, but that is fine because we are always on the path. It tells me that sometimes we have to backtrack, that inspiration is always available, and that I can find my way.

I just have to keep walking. It reminds me that I have to listen to my heart, that it always knows. In the center, I get inspiration and new paths to explore. When I walk out, it is a new journey.

The Labyrinth Teaches

TLS 365 Experience # 33
April 2, 2017

Inspirations have usually been in the form of guidance or direction around a particular question that I’ve taken into the labyrinth – such as, should I do or not do a particular thing.

I’ve occasionally had a flash of inspiration about a smart way to do something that I might be planning, or a reminder / pointer to do something that I might forget that might otherwise not cross my mind.

Overall, these seem to relate to a state of being more fully mindful that I might usually be in my day-to-day dreamy state!
