Meaning Assigned

Day 14: January 14
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Awareness
In The Month of: Definition

Sometimes the labyrinth I choose defines the walk and sometimes the walk defines the labyrinth. Years ago when I made a point to travel the expansiveness of the entire state and get to know the labyrinths that were present, I learned the stories of the labyrinth from walking them. What spoke to me emerged from where they were located, the design used, the materials applied and the way it was cared for. I found I could tell a lot about the labyrinth just by walking it. There were rarely any indications as to the intent of any individual labyrinth, only the standard suggestions that most left in signage or pamphlet.

Getting to know the labyrinth we tread upon and the intimacy of time together, comes purely in the moments of created time and observation. It may not seem important to many, though in this walk, however brief, an honest relationship is born and an experience realized. There is much to take in of our surrounding, intent and activity and when we drop into this, it is authenticity defined.  In speaking to people that either provided the care or were responsible for their creation, information that was shared supported the story I felt in walking.

In today’s walk I am reminded of a labyrinth that kept defining itself with deeper and deeper meaning in each path and circuit that appeared. There was no information and no one to speak with; it was simply found in the woods in an area no one seemed to frequent. Further research provided no leads. It became the consequential essential labyrinth; existing for whatever meaning we might wish to give it and for whatever reason we might wish to walk it. Metaphorically; alone in the woods, a truth lies waiting.

TLS 365 Experience 2018: The Year of Living Honestly
Whether it’s a daily walk, teaching others, sharing an experience, expressions of art, building or design, we explore the questions of what brings us to honesty in our use of the labyrinth.

In a world of emerging truth, the labyrinth is a great experience to discover more of what is right and true about ourselves and humanity. Join us in sharing the honest moments it reveals.

Daily unfolding the process:
So far we have a daily blog and an unscheduled mid month podcast to explore the monthly focus. Share this week at: 365Experience@labyrinthsociety.org

Something Felt

TLS 365 Experience #159
Aug. 6, 2017

We had an article to write and had written many before, though today all were very stumped. Suggesting a walk on the labyrinth nearby, most decided to go and as it was a group project, it would have been nice to have all join us, though we were content with letting all have their say and find their way. Those that joined were glad to be outdoors and felt a sense of resilience in being in step with both nature and themselves.

As we began we were feeling a little free and a little goofy, though the awkwardness of the intimacy we were creating soon relaxed as everyone found their individuality and set aside any thoughts of what the other might think. We settled into our own experience and our own relationship with the slump in the collective creativity that was typically available with this group. For myself, I relaxed and stopped asking why. Instead any thoughts of force fell away and surrendered to curiosity.

What I came to consider dropped off and my focus became of my feet, my steps and the outside air. As I walked I grew in a confident knowing way to simply appreciate many things. That we took the moment to consider the group’s need, the purpose of our prose, the point of our group and the individuality and characteristics of those who came together to accomplish something similar.

The walk became about so many singular pieces that what was numb became alive and each piece seemed to find its importance in the whole. It was a walk of unification and our collective knowing seemed to show up again in everyone as we found ourselves much more communicative and creative in discussion afterwards. Accomplishment wasn’t just something we did, it was something we felt.
