Laughter is a Celebration

Day 126: May 6
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Education
In The Month of: Celebration

World Laughter Day LabyrinthThe day after World Labyrinth Day is World Laughter Day. This international day has been around longer than World Labyrinth Day, originating in 1998 and in this year celebrates its 20th Anniversary, always annually on the first Sunday of May.  For years I held events on both Saturday and Sunday for World Labyrinth Day and World Laughter Day and often used the labyrinth for both days as having a focus on the labyrinth is what brought a focus for the last decade of laughter as well.

Spending ten days in Chartres, France in 2006 on study and retreat, there was always laughter around our group and it grew each day spilling out into the Chartres cathedral during one quiet walk. It began among two of us and quickly infected everyone else. It brought a real focus that perhaps as facilitators, we all might be taking our level of reverence and respect a little too seriously.  From that day forth the labyrinth held a sense of humanity, reality and freedom to be more honest with myself and offer up its wonders with reality.

On this day, laughter creates a celebration for the voice. When we breathe in and laugh out we can improve our ability to extend exhalation and release much of what is built up inside. The more we laugh, the better it feels and the more socially connected we can become with others. Each year I have created and posted a design for Google’s doodles (at the top of the labyrinth in the picture) since 2008 in the hopes that one year they would use it for World Laughter  Day. Imagine the world waking up, opening their browsers and on display is the Google logo dressed up as giggle, the likelihood of a laugh is sure to induce a smile or a moment of mirth. In that moment, we can appreciate the world in a happier place…. when you’re glad you can’t be sad or mad… laughter is a simple method for World Peace.

On this 125th day…
Breathe in as you walk your steps on the labyrinth today and as you traverse the length of pathway in between turns, release your breath with a laugh. As you turn inhale and repeat and by the time you find the center, you will find your center and reason for celebration.

The Month of Celebration, Appreciation and Realization
May’s Focus: Celebration

Life is a celebration to explore in the next 31 days. With the idea of walking the labyrinth and its tri-focus on releasing, receiving and reflecting, let’s shift the perspective to one that walks in with appreciation, finds the honest realization from each day and walks out in celebration.  Observe what 31 days of this focus might reflect and how it elevates our life condition.

Four focus points to expand your celebration of this month’s experience:

  1. Share your ideas, in your personal experiences, how you share the labyrinth with others, art, design or method of construction or in other ways that it may be utilized. Let others know about this daily experience and opportunity by sharing it. Find us on this blog and on the Labyrinth Societies Facebook page
  2. Join our Mid Month Dialogues on May 15th at 2pm CST for a lively look at what you have created and will create in the idea of celebration. This month’s theme was a direct result of our last month’s Mid Month Dialogue!
  3. Participate in the daily opportunity of this educational focus of  your personal journey, how you lead, teach or share with others, and what you create for contribution or purpose with this theme.
  4. Remember that our theme is about finding our greater capacities, abilities and true realities in being honest with our potential. We focus on what we can do as it is inherently more useful and productive.

Walk a Smile in Your Mile

Day 94: April 4
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Education
In The Month of: Amusement

Walk a Smile

This was a labyrinth created for a conference in 2008, ten years ago this month.  It made everyone feel happier. We shared a discourse on happiness, joy and positive experiences and what made them so.

With a few exercises and activities to help individuals tap into the differences between knowing what each was cognitively and experiencing them with sensory and emotion, the overall walk allowed for moments of reality expression that was healthy for each participant and definitely happier for everyone.

Each left with a smile on their face and in our workshop helping to accomplish our goal and elevate the mood of the whole conference.

On this 94th day…
Breathe in and exhale into a smile as you walk each length of path today, as you turn, repeat until you reach the center. Reflect and repeat as you return.

April's Banner Year of Living Honestly 2018April’s Focus

Let this month unfurl your creativity, spontaneity and jocularity. It feels good to feel good and while we have been conditioned to shush our good times, let the labyrinth be our own private creation station of amusement, enjoyment and playful experiments. This month educate with amusement and see how much farther you get. Have fun and be creative.  We have three opportunities to education your potential with amusement this month that involves either your personal walk, your ability to design and how much you can learn by sharing. On your Mark, Get Set…Go!

  1. Innovate – Walk Amused
In the 30 days that grace this month, play with the way you personally experience the labyrinth. Let this season of education be one of personal bests and enjoy finding a new way to be innovative, creative, inspired and amused in your personal experiences. I’d love to see what you come up with!
    Please share your wonderful experiences!

2. Create – Design Inspired
To date I have created 95 different labyrinth creations and designs since the beginning of the year, let that inspire you to create something new this month that is inspiring and firing for your imagination. Einstein said that playing with ideas was the highest form of research and this is an education for all of us.  As you walk in new ways, share your designs as I have done with mine last year and this. Perfection isn’t what we are after, amusement is! I look forward to seeing what you come up with! I will toss out lots of inspiring ideas… stay tuned daily.
Share away and become a glad designer instead of a mad one!

3. Relate – Share with Care
One of the best ways to learn anything is having to teach or explain it to someone else. Whether you facilitate others, teach or simply share with a few, spend the month discovering amusing new ways to help others get more out of their walk with a lighter attitude and a more earnest enjoyment in what you share. Anything you want to know more about, share and this month share with a fun flair and notice how much more you actually begin to understand. You just might find a side of yourself forgotten. To receive all that, be a great giver.
Share what you discover!

The Last Walk

TLS 365 Experience #306
December 31, 2017

When my children were young, we used to laugh about the last time we would be experiencing things on the last day of the year. It would begin with…”this is the last time I will…” and then we would break up in giggles. This went on all day long and it never ceased to be funny. It gave me an idea of how to lighten the year’s review with the last opportunities on the walk to be hosted on New Year’s Eve.

Explaining the concept of lasts to our participants in the candlelight walk, We walked the 12 paths with a 12 month review appreciating having had the experiences and gratitude for this last moment of thanks.  People lit their candles from others support resembling that which was present in support for the year. Each left something of the year in the center to leave behind and an engaged stone with a message to take into the new year. It was a walk full of good emotion and a few tears.  In the center we brought our candles together for a beautiful lighting and light hearted blessing for world peace, love and joy.

Wishing all of our 365 Experience Enthusiasts a year of prosperity in health, wealth and blissful new beginnings.

A Monthly Ministry of Service

TLS 365 Experience #224
October 10, 2017

My labyrinth partner and I have been giving monthly walks for many years, but my favorite thing is to create customized walks for groups.

Use of the labyrinth in ritual can bring people together for common goals and purposes, get them on the same page, resolve conflicts, enable change, open minds. Helping people plan their walk and how it might fit into a larger program can help them clarify what they really want to accomplish and put the focus on the larger purpose.

Helping to plan an event that incorporates the labyrinth is a form of ministry all its own. It has its own labyrinthine path, where we find that people come back to us again and again with changes and new ideas as they walk the path of our shared creation. It is the walk before the walk.

Nothing beats watching the joy and discovery on the faces of the people in the group as they walk out of the labyrinth at such an event, having found their inspiration and consensus, having had a profound experience and hearing about their experiences.

There Can Be Joy

TLS 365 Experience #77
May 16, 2017

One would think that an individual who promotes positivity and possibility in their work would be surrounded by it, though the truth is that those who work with this often encounter negativity regularly. It is a necessary part to explore, accept and improve our message.  We remind those who accept stress as a normalcy that there are techniques and choices to explore what we are truly capable of, should we dare to live differently.

I use the labyrinth for my personal introspection, faith and the conversation of hope for my everyday experiences. In this I am not alone and am reminded of the vitality and importance of my work. It reminds me of what I truly believe when I have doubt in the dealings of delivery to others who just need a reminder.

When I offer a walk of joy on the labyrinth, it speaks to the truth of my own doubts and reminders and offers the choice for living our birthright purposefully. It is not a straight shot, rather it is a winding, turning, spiraling that may seem confusing, though beyond that always has a path that provides a way to the center, and no matter what we want to make up about it… the center is always a center.
