TLS 365 Experience #193
September 9, 2017
Selecting a Totem animal from a card deck at a retreat offered the opportunity to experience the snake. At first apprehension was apparent. In preparing for the communion walk with others, memories of a childhood threat surfaced followed by a generational perspective. Suddenly what presented as hesitant subsided in perspective of this memory.
Others found hesitation as well about their respective Totem animal selected, yet all were willing to walk on the questions that surfaced. Coming to the labyrinth, it was interesting to discover the path was serpentine, and the irony, now began to be amusing. Remembered steps from long ago were in stride with the present and moving further in, the memory awakened and jogged along. The first image was one of a happy surprise that quickly turned ominous with realization. Like the event in the memory, the steps stopped, frozen just a few feet from the center of the labyrinth. Taking a moment to remember what created the next step, a door had opened and stepping in was welcomed.
Stepping over the threshold to the center, the door in the mind opened, remembering how someone long ago opened and welcomed the action to mobilize. In the center the fullness of the memory flooded into the light and the reminder that this was a significant message. As the walk continued, the snake’s message and symbolism revealed a walk in two worlds, transformation and the mothers and grandmothers who had taken the same journey. The snake revealed the useful symbolism of heath (medical) and wealth (financial) in our society and by the completion of the walk a transformation to a much greater appreciation of the snake’s message as a Totem became clear.
