Barefoot Surrender

Day 127: May 7
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Education
In The Month of: Celebration

The Bench in the middle of the labyrinth, New EnglandStep into a barefoot experience with Karen S. of New England:

My favorite way to walk the labyrinth is barefoot, especially when the temperature remains above 60F and there is soft moss on the ground. Our intentional co-housing community has an enchanting wooded labyrinth that can be found on the Worldwide Labyrinth Locator.

I am fortunate to live so close to it and walk the path every day when the weather is warm enough. I have built quite an intimate relationship with this space and love basking in the freshness of nature there! When the birds sing, my spirit sings, too!

When I sit on the bench at the center to meditate, I am always delighted with visits from squirrels, chipmunks and a gardener snake once in a while.

Small celebrations of the day!

On this 127th day…
Celebrate nature’s goodness with a barefoot walk, where permissible. A finger walk with total surrender can also give a tactile experience outdoors with the surround sound of nature.

The Month of Celebration, Appreciation and Realization
May’s Focus: Celebration

Life is a celebration to explore in the next 31 days. With the idea of walking the labyrinth and its tri-focus on releasing, receiving and reflecting, let’s shift the perspective to one that walks in with appreciation, finds the honest realization from each day and walks out in celebration.  Observe what 31 days of this focus might reflect and how it elevates our life condition.

Four focus points to expand your celebration of this month’s experience:

  1. Share your ideas, in your personal experiences, how you share the labyrinth with others, art, design or method of construction or in other ways that it may be utilized. Let others know about this daily experience and opportunity by sharing it. Find us on this blog and on the Labyrinth Societies Facebook page
  2. Join our Mid Month Dialogues on May 15th at 2pm CST for a lively look at what you have created and will create in the idea of celebration. This month’s theme was a direct result of our last month’s Mid Month Dialogue!
  3. Participate in the daily opportunity of this educational focus of  your personal journey, how you lead, teach or share with others, and what you create for contribution or purpose with this theme.
  4. Remember that our theme is about finding our greater capacities, abilities and true realities in being honest with our potential. We focus on what we can do as it is inherently more useful and productive.

Earth Integrity

Day 24: January 24
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Awareness
In The Month of: Definition

To hear the story of creation from Jeffrey Bale is to hear an honest man’s endeavor for truth. Sharing the story of the creation of the Islandwood Labyrinth in Washington State,  Jeffrey shared the respect for nature honoring each stone for its significance and placement in the thousands he instilled into the heartfelt crafting of his design. Honoring where each element came from and thankful for their participation in the humble beauty of his art, it gave participants a deep regard for the single placement of their feet upon the pathways.

The sheer quantity of stone and story that poured into this design will remain a historical element of unassuming  wealth borne of the artistry of one man’s relationship with the integrity of nature’s gifts. Its natural abundance comes in the humility of its design and its modest residence nestled just off the roadway trailing down a very short distance to discover a serenity in seclusion amidst the lineage of tall trees.

One does not often encounter such a deep and abiding honor of an encounter with Earth and art in this way. It’s memory will live long and its meaning will live into a higher regard in the way of development and creation for myself and most likely those fortunate enough to have experienced the venerable honesty of this artist’s message and mission.

A suggestion to walk with:

Focus upon where and how you use your Earth this day.

TLS 365 Experience 2018: The Year of Living Honestly
Whether it’s a daily walk, teaching others, sharing an experience, expressions of art, building or design, we explore the questions of what brings us to honesty in our use of the labyrinth.

In a world of emerging truth, the labyrinth is a great experience to discover more of what is right and true about ourselves and humanity. Join us in sharing the honest moments it reveals.

Labyrinths In Life

TLS 365 Experience #132
July 10, 2017

Labyrinth sewer coverWhen your focus is about the labyrinth, they seem to show up everywhere. From the simple Greek Key design to a fully walkable permanent design;  we can find them in society and nature.

The geometric shapes become more plentiful and seem to be represented in pattern and fabric and over the years I have found them in the most interesting of areas and places I wouldn’t really expect.

Meanders in nature and design, clothing and architecture are really more common than we might think. Look up, look down they are all around.

Walking With The Body

TLS 365 Experience #83
May 22, 2017

I walk a lot.
I like to walk.
When I am on a long walk in nature it is a fabulous thing to be reminded of how natural we truly are. There is a sense of naturalness that I relate to as I walk the labyrinth.

As I move inward in a spiraling way and recognize the shifts in the turn that occur on my journey inward, I recogize the natural way our body flows. The brain and the belly each wind themselves inward to a central location, though along the way there are these turns that seem to take slighly different directions, only to return again moving inward. The fingerprints navigate in the same manner as does the fine circuitry of our inner ears, though looking at the design in our outer ear makes for wonder as well.

When we look more closely at the body design, there is much to indicate that it’s natural operation is very labyrinth in nature. So when I do place my foot upon the path to begin a walk and focus on the whole of my body, I find that everything about me is alert to the steps I take in a most natural way.

The Notice of Nature

TLS 365 Experience #43
April 12, 2017

One of the joys of walking outdoor labyrinths is that some aspect of nature presents itself in such a way that your attention is captured and questions arise.

For example, a twig with two pine cones crossed my path, followed shortly thereafter with a single pine cone that was half-trampled. Metaphors bounced around in my head as I contemplated a difficult relationship that stymied me.

I carried the pinecones home as the prompt for serious soul-journeying where decisioning became clear and flowed easily. Were it not for the walk, would I have so effortlessly dissected the issues and clarified my perspective?

Also often, in the walk I am accompanied by birds, rabbits, ants, cats, hawks, ravens, etc., all of whom provide reminders to be here now and pay attention.

Absorbing the Labyrinth

Hopefully all these ways that I am finding our of value to all of you. In the spirit of moving differently we are also moved differently in cognitive and socio emotional and spiritual ways too. How we are moved in the end might have something to do with how we also moved differently. The story of Insanity is to do the same thing repetitively and expect a different outcome.

The interesting things that are found when moving in different ways are as vast and varied as our minds would care to conceive as it can be something very small and seeming insignificant, or something life changing… it is all about looking for it.

AmazeME labyrinth

The AmazeMe Labyrinth

I came across this image online where the “AmaZeME” Labyrinth was created in a New York Library. Where the term labyrinth is often used loosely in literature to describe a maze or some kind of endless loops of confusion, the truth is that on every journey there is an education and something to absorb.

Imagine the volumes of books, periodicals and media substance that went into the piles and piles of material used to create it. Then imagine being able to simply open to received the variety of materials as you made your way along the path.

The labyrinth affords us that opportunity everyday. Just being open and ready to allow the walk to upload into our existence we can be that much more aware of the very nuances of the simple acts of nature, threads of purpose or what is drawn to the path. Simply using the word “absorb” we suggest a simple idea to draw into and deepen the meaning…at least for today.

I absorbed and it was the wind that I noticed. Mostly because it was subtle and light. It was the gentle exchange between movement and non movement throughout. At one point I simply stopped and listened and in the listening I let go and allowed the wind to direct me noting where on my body it directed and the course it plotted. It meant I didn’t walk all the paths and instead charted a new one. It made all the difference in my day and was a strong message for me about something that felt forced.

A deep breath with ahhhh – ha at the end,

Lynda
