Beneath the Surface

Day 113: April 23
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Education
In The Month of: Amusement

The Floor Tile direction that created a labyrinth of design Just as the amusement can be found in your day when you are of mind to look for it, the labyrinth can be discovered in the most interesting places too; often that can be an equally amusing encounter to appreciate as well.  In today’s adventure both amusement came and insight in discovering first the four way pattern in the flooring of an apartment. The landlord shared that it had radiant heat flooring so the floor would always be comfortable in the winter time. At first glance the grain of which the tile moved adjacently to the next tile in a different direction brought the back and forth traversing of the labyrinth paths to mind. In viewing four of the squares, the traversing pattern changed direction and focus when moving around the four squares, similar to the concept of the Roman Labyrinth with each square completing before moving on to the next.

This design moves back and forth again in each square for a forward and seemingly backward motion that propelled a forward motion. The traversing is not unlike the radiant coils that lay beneath the surface of flooring and only after completing the design did the illustration of the flooring arrive to demonstrate a similar pattern. When we follow a feeling and flow with it, we can often learn how on track with a certain path we are. In those moments, we become most honest with ourselves in what we are capable of and often humbled by the synchronous factors that come together to remember to trust ourselves more. On this particular day, the intuitive met the creative and together the radiant experience brought a new warmth to the path laying under our feet without our having realized its value. How amusing to focus and discover how much is truly apparent about what lays just below the surface.

On this 113th day…
Discover the patterns that appear today and recall where else these similar patterns show up in other parts of life.

April's Banner Year of Living Honestly 2018April’s Focus

Let this month unfurl your creativity, spontaneity and jocularity. It feels good to feel good and while we have been conditioned to shush our good times, let the labyrinth be our own private creation station of amusement, enjoyment and playful experiments. This month educate with amusement and see how much farther you get. Have fun and be creative.  We have three opportunities to education your potential with amusement this month that involves either your personal walk, your ability to design and how much you can learn by sharing. On your Mark, Get Set…Go!

  1. Innovate – Walk Amused
In the 30 days that grace this month, play with the way you personally experience the labyrinth. Let this season of education be one of personal bests and enjoy finding a new way to be innovative, creative, inspired and amused in your personal experiences. I’d love to see what you come up with!
    Please share your wonderful experiences!

2. Create – Design Inspired
To date I have created 95 different labyrinth creations and designs since the beginning of the year, let that inspire you to create something new this month that is inspiring and firing for your imagination. Einstein said that playing with ideas was the highest form of research and this is an education for all of us.  As you walk in new ways, share your designs as I have done with mine last year and this. Perfection isn’t what we are after, amusement is! I look forward to seeing what you come up with! I will toss out lots of inspiring ideas… stay tuned daily.
Share away and become a glad designer instead of a mad one!

3. Relate – Share with Care
One of the best ways to learn anything is having to teach or explain it to someone else. Whether you facilitate others, teach or simply share with a few, spend the month discovering amusing new ways to help others get more out of their walk with a lighter attitude and a more earnest enjoyment in what you share. Anything you want to know more about, share and this month share with a fun flair and notice how much more you actually begin to understand. You just might find a side of yourself forgotten. To receive all that, be a great giver.

The Key of Flow

Day 98: April 8
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Education
In The Month of: Amusement

The Greek Key Labyrinth and the Red Eggs of Orthodox EasterThe holidays of the Christian Easter and Passover have completed and are followed by the Orthodox Christian Easter that begins today as identified by the Julian calendar that sets the date after Passover. This Easter is the result of the excommunication of the Pope of the Catholic Church and the Eastern Patriarch of the Orthodoxy back in 1054 AD where the adoption of the Gregorian calendar by Catholic and Protestant Christianity set a new date for the Easter holiday. Easter is a time of resurrection and freedom added by the newness of Spring reminding us to begin anew and rise.

The use of the Greek Key is a great appreciation for the consistent pattern that moves the tide of flow. It comes from the ancient river Meander and symbolizes the natural order of movement; and when it comes in the form of a circle, it is a reminder of how we are connected in the bonds of friendships and families. The Greek Key has been an important iconic geometric pattern that flows throughout Greek history and is a symbol of infinity. The custom of the red eggs denotes the blood of Christ and the designs can be as simple as a pure red dye or  as different and intricate with patterns depicting the cultural basis and beliefs of the different Orthodoxies.

It was fun to create this element of time with 24 keys to walk each hour of this day in one instance to elevate the flow of possibility that exists in review of what we can make free with the honesty of this year’s program and amusing to add the design of the labyrinth to the depth of meaning that the red eggs symbolize humbly honoring what we can set free and realize within ourselves.

May the joys of connection, rising and infinite flow enhance your walk and exploration of ancient meanings for conventional times today.

On this 98th day…
Meander in the ease of natural flow in your walk and notice how much more at each your natural flow becomes.

The 69th Simplicity

Day 69: March 10
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Awareness
In The Month of: Discover

To honor and celebrate the 69th day of the year, the spiral is contained within the overlapping numbers of six and nine that create a natural central space with trailing appendages. The logarithmic spiral is also known as the equiangular or the growth spiral as it demonstrates the capacity to expand and continue infinitely. This spiral was first characterized for its cycling properties by by Rene Descartes in the mid 1600’s. The main difference between the similarly styled Archimedean Spiral and the Logarithmic Spiral is noted by the expansive pathways that grow in wider with each spiral. In the Archimedean design the path widths remain constant in size.

Noticing patterns, the six and nines become easy to transpose and design with as they are generally adjustable in usage and offer us the opportunity to be more versatile as well. In the midst of design today, the overlapping number features were an easy design and remind of the simplicity of the lines of the labyrinth. Today’s walk was of the quiet reflective nature, solo and uninterrupted. It called for simplicity and usefulness.  The past days of realizing the varying degrees of the spirals that are present and the nature of the function of the spiral in the labyrinth can be appreciative. A simple way in and out was what called for the walk today, so it was not surprising why this pattern showed up to appreciate the complex growth possible in the Logarithmic Spiral and the easy and simple nature of the number six or nine redefined and designed made sense. It was a balance of universal wonder where complexities walk alongside the powerfully simple.  Even in today’s  design, it becomes a roadwork of paths to choose the black or the white or both.

On this 69th day…
Walk with the simple graces today and appreciate how expansive they can become, yet humble in their simple design. What finds its way to your path today?

March’s Focus

As it is now the third month of the year and our last month of growing awareness before we delve into the ways of education, allow this month be one that creates both the light hearted discovery and profound realization. How can you create more awareness with the labyrinth personally or in the ways you share with others? Where do you notice a spiral effect that takes you to the point or away from it? Be on the lookout for the spiraling nature this month.

  1. Realize
In the 31 Days this month offers, become aware of the daily realizations that you create and discover. Walking daily creates compound interest in what you look forward to and discover each day. Let March become your month of expanded capacity as you walk to make each day and adventure in exploration of what more you can explore. Seek to spiral into new and inspiring realization and whether it is rich and profound or light hearted and amusing… be open, walk with intention and you are bound to come away larger.

2. Surprise
One can realize and find much in the depth of understanding that awareness offers us, though when we look forward to realization of that depth and awareness, it can inspire new ways of appreciation and discovery in both our  process and capabilities as we are constantly growing, no matter what age. Invite the element of  surprise into what you realize as it can lift what you discover into seeing a bit more than before.  Notice the spiral effect of how you move from realize to surprise and make discovery more significant and true.

Prime Walk

Day 63: March 4
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Awareness
In The Month of: Discover

In 1963 mathematician Stansilaw Ulam doodled with numbers and ended up with an ordered labyrinth called the Prime Spiral. It is so named because if you circle the prime numbers in the logical ordered sequence he prescribed, what appears are the formations of diagonal lines. Math is an infinite equation for universal discovery and Ulam was a master of finding simplicity in the complexity. Finding simplicity is a sign that we are using more of our capacity and genius, whether the complexity present is ordered or a product of our own development. Expanding our capacity is an honest effort of our ability and our larger purpose in this year.

Life is complex or as simple as we make it. Like the prime numbers in today’s design, a classroom of students today helped to complete the patterns of the spiraled square and followed with completion of  the number sequence that was added. When asked to find patterns they found several and finally one drew a line where the prime numbers lay.  Our conversation was about discovering patterns. Adding a reverse square spiral inside of the existing we shared conversation about how this made more more complexity and what we might gain in insight or intrigue from it. Some enjoyed the complexity citing advantages while others preferred the simple structure and its basic elemental offering. There was neither a right or a wrong, only the opportunity of choice and a way to recognize our relationship with both sides of complexity and simplicity.

A suggestion to walk with:

On this 64th day…
Observe the complex areas of your walk that can be simpler and the simple that might grow different with complexity.

Idle Insights

Day 11: January 11
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Awareness
In The Month of: Definition

The idle moments can provide a useful reflection of what we do in the waiting periods of our lives. Today was met with doctor calls and hospital visits. Lots of time in between and no labyrinth to walk in the waiting, though there is always a way when we get clear about our intentions. Labyrinths in hospitals provide a benefit to waiting family members, patients, staff and community in a variety of ways. On the other side of town, there is a labyrinth at one of the hospitals so the pattern has been established and the labyrinth made on paper today might well become the labyrinth of this hospital in the future.

The test of time and patience walked in my fingers today and with the reflection in being honest with myself about expectation and defining the results, the clarity of the walk wasn’t about whether I would find function with my time or more patience, it was about how much I would create with the time in between. Once the question of being honest with the circumstance and myself was on the table, there wasn’t a need to search; leaving only wide open wonder to explore with what was available.

A suggestion to walk with:

Between drama or dreams, which is honest?

TLS 365 Experience 2018: The Year of Living Honestly
Whether it’s a daily walk, teaching others, sharing an experience, expressions of art, building or design, we explore the questions of what brings us to honesty in our use of the labyrinth.

In a world of emerging truth, the labyrinth is a great experience to discover more of what is right and true about ourselves and humanity. Join us in sharing the honest moments it reveals.

Daily unfolding the process:
So far we have a daily blog and an unscheduled mid month podcast to explore the monthly focus. Share this week at: 365Experience@labyrinthsociety.org

Planting Seeds of Creativity

TLS 365 Experience #231
October 17 2017

Greek Key and Labyrinth The experience of sharing the seed patterns with a group of students had them doodling and designing all afternoon. In fact the next time I visited the class, new designs and ideas germinated from these seed patterns and many had been able to share where they had seen the pattern show up in design, advertising and in items found around the house.

What began as a simple idea to show the formation and foundation of the design, had blossomed into a greater understanding and application for life.

Body Paths

TLS 365 Experience #139
July 17, 2017

Finger Print LabyrinthIn class we were investigating finger prints. In identifying the different types of basic prints and the line definitions that are unique to each, the idea of the lines of the labyrinth came up.

Sharing the labyrinth, we decided to create our own identity labyrinths based on finger prints. Knowing that many of our body lines also are distinct, we further investigated the lines in the elbows, ears, feet, patterns in the tongue, freckles and what ever visible defining lines we might discover and found our own patterns and labyrinths developing.

In many ways we are a walking labyrinth and when we walk the labyrinth we discover more about what our lines, pathways and borders reveal.

Labyrinths In Life

TLS 365 Experience #132
July 10, 2017

Labyrinth sewer coverWhen your focus is about the labyrinth, they seem to show up everywhere. From the simple Greek Key design to a fully walkable permanent design;  we can find them in society and nature.

The geometric shapes become more plentiful and seem to be represented in pattern and fabric and over the years I have found them in the most interesting of areas and places I wouldn’t really expect.

Meanders in nature and design, clothing and architecture are really more common than we might think. Look up, look down they are all around.

Natural Sole

TLS 365 Experience #130
July 8, 2017

Walking naturally and with sole appreciationI enjoy feeling connected to the labyrinth in my walk.

I really appreciate the times when a natural meeting of my barefoot being integrates with the path of purpose for the moment. It brings a sense of organic freedom and I notice I move differently than when I walk in shoes.

I seem to feel each step more intimately and integrate the experience with a greater sensory perception. I feel the coolness of the stone and notice the unevenness of the pattern. I become aware of the leaves, twigs and seeds that have become windswept onto the path now with touch, sound and visual encounter.

As I complete my experience, I am reminded of how much more I absorbed, as I attempt to brush away the sand, leaves and particles tucked into the crevices of the labyrinth that have imprinted new patterned indents into my sole.  I can reflect perhaps a little more expansively on the patterns and impressions that have been left upon my soul when I walk in this natural way.
