Shaping your Path

Day 141: May 21
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Education
In The Month of: Celebration

Three shapes of one pathIn a group of women yesterday, the dialogue following the walk included many of the trials and lessons that individuals were currently in process with. There was a sense of needing to fix the situation, as if the place they were in had no value. Between the over analysis and the curious expectancy of the group, I gave each a piece of paper and asked them to draw a shape that represented their circumstance and then asked them to walk again taking in consideration the shape they had chosen. After the walk, interesting dialogue came about in the way of what was balanced, what cycled and found its end a new beginning and taking notice of different angles and perspectives. Focusing on the shapes seemed to bring out the characteristics of their situation and an interesting matching characteristic of the shapes. This awareness provided an opportunity to see differently and discover that the blessing of the problem with a greater focus on solution.

For a change of perspective to what works, what’s good and what is right; celebrating the walk with acceptance of the shape you are in can make a difference in your steps and in your outcome. This design came to mind afterwards illustrating that point and remind us in our walk that moving through what we think is a problem can often show us the answer. The shapes are different colors to highlight their features and in walking through, it might at first seem confusing to step over into another shape or color, though staying on the one path will take you past confusion and into clarity.

On this 141st day…
Choose a shape to go along with a question and discover what shape you are in by following your path to conclusion and focusing on the characteristics of what you can appreciate.

The Month of Celebration, Appreciation and Realization

May’s Focus: Celebration

Life is a celebration to explore in the next 31 days. With the idea of walking the labyrinth and its tri-focus on releasing, receiving and reflecting, let’s shift the perspective to one that walks in with appreciation, finds the honest realization from each day and walks out in celebration.  Observe what 31 days of this focus might reflect and how it elevates our life condition.

Four focus points to expand your celebration of this month’s experience:

  1. Share your ideas, in your personal experiences, how you share the labyrinth with others, art, design or method of construction or in other ways that it may be utilized. Let others know about this daily experience and opportunity by sharing it. Find us on this blog and on the Labyrinth Societies Facebook page
  2. Join our Mid Month Dialogues on May 15th at 2pm CST for a lively look at what you have created and will create in the idea of celebration. This month’s theme was a direct result of our last month’s Mid Month Dialogue!
  3. Participate in the daily opportunity of this educational focus of  your personal journey, how you lead, teach or share with others, and what you create for contribution or purpose with this theme.
  4. Remember that our theme is about finding our greater capacities, abilities and true realities in being honest with our potential. We focus on what we can do as it is inherently more useful and productive.

Season of Construction

Day 97: April 7
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Education
In The Month of: Amusement

Labyrinth for a Construction SeasonOne could be confounded by the sudden flip of a switch that seemed to take place a few days ago when the Winter season moved into construction season.  What were open roadways now became littered with traffic cones and barrels, barricades and an assortment of ominous looking machines designed to alter the normal routines of our day. After developing an intimate relationship with the striped barrels each day that routinely began to divert my path leading to detours to the left and right that circled back to find the main road in a circuitous manner that could only be described as labyrinthic; it dawned that each day’s travels had been following a path that redirected thought, emotion and physical direction.

This labyrinth under construction brings us through the barricades and beyond where we are redirected not to go, only to find that going there might reveal the secrets under the symbolic manhole cover. Turning mystery into mirth this design brings together the elements of amusement, simplicity and new perspective for a more interesting outcome that inspires creativity with a little cheek!

Follow the lighter gray path from thick to thin and back again.

On this 97th day…
In your walk or work of this day, can you define a way to create something more out of what you are given?

April's Banner Year of Living Honestly 2018April’s Focus

Let this month unfurl your creativity, spontaneity and jocularity. It feels good to feel good and while we have been conditioned to shush our good times, let the labyrinth be our own private creation station of amusement, enjoyment and playful experiments. This month educate with amusement and see how much farther you get. Have fun and be creative.  We have three opportunities to education your potential with amusement this month that involves either your personal walk, your ability to design and how much you can learn by sharing. On your Mark, Get Set…Go!

  1. Innovate – Walk Amused
In the 30 days that grace this month, play with the way you personally experience the labyrinth. Let this season of education be one of personal bests and enjoy finding a new way to be innovative, creative, inspired and amused in your personal experiences. I’d love to see what you come up with!
    Please share your wonderful experiences!

2. Create – Design Inspired
To date I have created 95 different labyrinth creations and designs since the beginning of the year, let that inspire you to create something new this month that is inspiring and firing for your imagination. Einstein said that playing with ideas was the highest form of research and this is an education for all of us.  As you walk in new ways, share your designs as I have done with mine last year and this. Perfection isn’t what we are after, amusement is! I look forward to seeing what you come up with! I will toss out lots of inspiring ideas… stay tuned daily.
Share away and become a glad designer instead of a mad one!

3. Relate – Share with Care
One of the best ways to learn anything is having to teach or explain it to someone else. Whether you facilitate others, teach or simply share with a few, spend the month discovering amusing new ways to help others get more out of their walk with a lighter attitude and a more earnest enjoyment in what you share. Anything you want to know more about, share and this month share with a fun flair and notice how much more you actually begin to understand. You just might find a side of yourself forgotten. To receive all that, be a great giver.
Share what you discover!

Welcome April

Day 91: April 1
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Education
In The Month of: Amusement

National Humor Month Begins on the LabyrinthWe find ourselves in the second season of the Year of Living Honestly, discovering the truth about what we are capable of in our walk of focus on the labyrinth. We move from becoming aware of our capacity, to educate with it and be educated by what we chose to do with it. The next three months give us the opportunity to honestly expand turning possibilities into probabilities. Use the labyrinth to educate yourself and also to educate others, as the more you share, the more you become aware of understanding something new.

April is National Humor Month and one of the proving points for great intelligence is in the ability to use humor. It sharpens our wit, invites a greater perspective and elevates our attitude and changes the way we relate to everything. Those who find the amusement in life use more of their capacity and potential as they understand the genius of play and light hearted living. Our world is looking for answers and when we have an elevated perspective, we can access them more efficiently for more effective responses.

Today is April Fool’s Day and while a great many pranks and good natured stunts are being orchestrated, it reminds us that we all want to have reasons to smile more and feel good. Let’s find the fun in our days and ways of walking the labyrinth. Remember that ancient stories tell us of the dances that took place on the labyrinth in ritual, tradition, art and expression. Labyrinths with children and in schools remind us of how to play with it to explore what is possible, just like our year long program here. Might I say here that jokes can be subjects, though enhancing a sense of humor is brilliance in action!

Innovate, Create and Relate
You may have noticed that I have been creating daily designs, so far it just felt good to be creative and after each walk, a new idea emerged. The creativity of this year of living honestly is inspiring and I hope it is bringing more of that out in you.

See below for the details of this month’s activities with three fun fabulous options to expand the truth about what more you can discover about yourself when focusing on amusement… just watch your abilities awaken.

A suggestion to walk with:

On this 91st day…
Celebrate your humor being. Walk and remember how good it feels to feel good, increasing the feeling by being honest about what really feels good.

The Uncommon Three

Day 77: March 18
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Awareness
In The Month of: Discover

Day77_TheUncommonThree_TheAmusedMuseIn the aftermath of the great greening of clover comes the triple spiral of uncommon commonality. Where the three clovers of yesterday remind us of how much more common place they are, the triple spiral has a way of bringing the powerful concept of three together in its winding opportunity. Where one spiral astounds us in the mathematical ratios, three offers us a repeat and a threepeat of the experience to spiral us to where our truth lies. In Pythagorean understanding the number three is the first true number as its the first number that provides us with a geometrical figure, the triangle. It is a divine number as it gives us beginning, middle and ending. It also offers us past, present and future, birth life and death, and is found as a number of significance for the balance, harmony and support it creates to expand ourselves in cultures, traditions, symbolism and science universally.

With this opportunity to experience one spiraling walk and add another, comes the uncommonality of what is provided in the third as it brings together and expands a unique perspective of our oneness, our duality and humanity on a larger sense. In the smaller day to day existence of our passionate footsteps, it can bring the realms of purpose more practically into perspective.

A suggestion to walk with:

On this 77th day…
Walk with a tri focus to discover insightful, grander and truthful discoveries today.

————————————————————————————–

March’s Focus

As it is now the third month of the year and our last month of growing awareness before we delve into the ways of education, allow this month be one that creates both the light hearted discovery and profound realization. How can you create more awareness with the labyrinth personally or in the ways you share with others? Where do you notice a spiral effect that takes you to the point or away from it? Be on the lookout for the spiraling nature this month.

  1. Realize
In the 31 Days this month offers, become aware of the daily realizations that you create and discover. Walking daily creates compound interest in what you look forward to and discover each day. Let March become your month of expanded capacity as you walk to make each day and adventure in exploration of what more you can explore. Seek to spiral into new and inspiring realization and whether it is rich and profound or light hearted and amusing… be open, walk with intention and you are bound to come away larger.

2. Surprise
One can realize and find much in the depth of understanding that awareness offers us, though when we look forward to realization of that depth and awareness, it can inspire new ways of appreciation and discovery in both our  process and capabilities as we are constantly growing, no matter what age. Invite the element of  surprise into what you realize as it can lift what you discover into seeing a bit more than before.  Notice the spiral effect of how you move from realize to surprise and make discovery more significant and true.

Triangulated

Day 68: March 9
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Awareness
In The Month of: Discover

Finding the day busier than expected, time for reflection moved later and later into the day. Finally, a chance to stop and refresh presented itself and while waiting in between, the colorful straws on the shelf  in a glass cylinder made for a quick design with fun in mind. While many intense moments can be wonderful in the education and application of a meaningful experience, the moments to step away and rejuvenate body and mind can be profound in importance and production.  Even with wonderful intensity, moving away from the magnetizing spiral of consumption benefits more with a new perspective. As the focus this month moves us inward with a concentration of the motion and matter of the spiral; work, rest and play are a triad of balance in what we can get caught up in.

Designing, and tracing this labyrinth of triangular function while taking time out, the three important focal points of the day resurfaced in this design. Something as simple as bending straws became a pleasurable new direction of intention and non intention.  A triad seemed to want to express itself in the straws and as it did, it reinforced these three concepts with each fold and turn.  By the time I had reached my  last straw, what brought the three together became  purposefully clear and somewhat amusing in the minimal ease that occurred to provide this insight for the moment and for the larger project I had walked away from.

Not all spirals are circular and not all intensities need be difficult, hard or troublesome. This was intensely brilliant and in playing with straws, a number of messages arrived in a way more expansive processes might have missed. It evidences my belief in the value of play over and over again in its genius method of finding what is truly important. Playing with the labyrinth in walk, process or design seems to provide endless creativity that brings all points together. Today, there was a  triangulated triumph.

On this 68th day…
Today triangulate what is important and discover  three main points of focus and as you move in, center and move out, find a triad of truth in what it opens.

In the Beginning

Day 23: January 23
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Awareness
In The Month of: Definition

In the beginning, there is a point of intention, though sometimes we don’t always notice it. We want to walk, practice or just be in the experience and so we come to the walk in whatever way that serves us knowing, though not always knowing the truth that sits with us. We may ask a question and have clarity around it and walk to discover, though in that beginning moment the answer is already understood.

The walk serves to support, open and supply us with evidence that helps us to open and realize more perspective or reason beyond any doubts we might be questioning.

The walk we take helps us to believe more in our own ideas, abilities and inspirations. Each step becomes a clarity of purpose and the more we are open to it, willing and ready, the more likely what is at our beginning can be more visible to us in the ending. Our walk exercises our belief, truth and trust in what we know and in our own way, we find out the subtle honest nuances of who we are and what we are capable of in the steps we take.

Today’s walk in the desert was realized in the steps taken, solidified in the turns made and transitioned into a trust in reaching  the center as a place of holding space.  It deepened with perspective and materialized in the facets of realization that now sparkled with variety by the time the walk came to a close. At the end what was true in the beginning  remained and what accompanied it was an honest evaluation of its full value.

A suggestion to walk with:

How is your beginning more realized at the end?

Defining Honesty

Day 2: January 2
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Awareness
In The Month of: Definition

Let this month of January be full of definitions. As defining as our daily walk tends to be, it’s a perfect tool to use for both defining what honesty is and how we can see its point in all we do. Ask and allow, and honesty will bring forth value. I tend to think about what is right and what is working, anything else is just complication, we want to remove ourselves from that as it is mostly just not true. Keep it all simple and defining everything becomes easier.

If I had to think of a focus for the first month of living honestly, I would begin by defining what honesty really is and what it means to me. The labyrinth provides a wonderful way to have that conversation. Walking into the early morning hours today was a cool definition of the day. Not so cold as other cities, though its crisp, coolness did make for an honest snap to focus. I became aware of the sounds of the light breeze, the gravel beneath me, the scent of the dust and the poplar trees nearby and the subtle sounds of society preparing for its day. Each step became one of clear intent of carrying me forward and where the destination initially seemed to be the focus, what became definable was the present moment of each step. The future of where I was headed and the past of where I came into the walk were absent and all that was left was each moment defined by the meaning I gave to it.

Where there may be a lot of unknown still unresolved in my world, what is clear as I came to a close of the walk, was that it had been defined, clear and awakening. Defining things has a way of making us pay attention to all the details present and honesty has a way of clarifying up perspective. It removes the unnecessary from the equation in front of us and leaves us with what is purposeful and practical. I would say this was a good start to defining what honesty can do for us.

What does it mean to define honesty?

Realized Walk

TLS 365 Experience #290
December 15, 2017

This is the happy walk of realization!
When working on a project, idea or creation, walking on it over the months has produced little bits of important information. Where walking on it more has created new and different insights. Walking even more in those curiously blocked moments has developed a range of perspective not otherwise noticed. Then when all those moments, in those walks of inquiry, release and prayer have found their saturation point, there is one more walk left. It is the moment of happy realization in the completion, appreciation of the struggle and affirmation of the goal. This is the walk we wait for and when it is said and done, we look for the next idea or project to come.

Gifts of Light

TLS 365 Experience #287
December 12, 2017

Hanukkah begins tonight, and I am reminded of the messages and meanings in these eight days of light and dedication. Walking each path on the labyrinth with a small group, the labyrinth to some seemed more Christian. Explaining the ancient origins of this cretan style path, all had new perspective and as we walked in rededication, each path resembled a new light to focus upon. In later discussion, more could see how this might be considered a tool of focus and dedication and open to all. It turned the conversation to one of open and accepting. It was a new idea for most and in the end, the light of new perspective and appreciation was the gift of this day in the spirit of dedicating the oneness of humanity’s spirit.

Conflict Resolution

TLS 365 Experience #257
November 12, 2017

Conflicts indeed can be sorted out on the labyrinth, from the internal conflict we might struggle with on any given day to the difference of opinion that two people might be on either side of understanding. Though differences between groups of people and even our nation might well be served with a walk on the labyrinth.

Over the years of offering walks and talks of the labyrinth, I’ve come to learn of the many ways that indifference can become difference, which makes more matter and at least have an opinion. Difference can become appreciated for what it is and for what is not understood and causes conflict, the labyrinth walk helps perspective to grow and more to be understood and appreciated. Conflict is everywhere and found in everyday, time on the labyrinth allows for time and viewpoint to change.

When I heard the labyrinth was used instead of time out isolation at an elementary school, it brought hope for evolvement in education.  I think if we can get more of humanity to sort out life’s issues on the labyrinth more regularly, we might indeed have the peace we seek.
