Hope, Remembrance and Growth

TLS 365 Experience #195
September 11, 2017

On the tenth anniversary of the attack of September 11th, there was a Hope Fest in our town. It was  a way to emerge our growth through the largeness of a positive and lifting experience that we were finding a readiness for as a nation.  Asked to offer a program with the labyrinth, it seemed a good way to appreciate how the concept of hope had actually been present in each of the past years.

We had a beautiful tall glass urn in the center of the room that held a candle and encircled by 11 small candles that sat in between the two labyrinths I had brought. One would symbolize then, and the other now. We sat in silent reflection for 11 minutes hearing the clear ring of the tinghshaw instrument resounding a vibrant chord that broke the stillness. This was followed with a few softly spoken sentences that reminded of where hope had actually been present in the way that people gathered, remembered, cared and shared.

After each reading a smaller of candle would be lit and we sat in silent reflection of the moment and message before the tingshaw cleared the air for a graduate message of hope throughout.   As we reached the 11th minute to signal the coming year of Hope, all were invited to sing out a tonal articulation that was choir like to hear.

As the final message was read and the last candle lit,  the instructions were to move to either the labyrinth of then or now when they were ready. Each might walk with their own appreciation, understanding or experience of hope. It was a powerful and moving experience and the shares were rich and defined with what hope stood for in the ideals of a nation growing through its pain.

Today on this 16th Anniversary, there is a small walk planned. Like every walk I have done since the 10th anniversary, blessings for hope, rememberance and growth are always a part of the walk, though this tenth anniversary will always be remembered for its powerful lifting message.
