Day 292  October 19
In The Year of Honest Living
In The Quarter of: Contribution
In The Month of: Message, Metaphor and Magic

Pinecone labyrinth on the river with meditative metaphor by

Topic: Meditative

Being of the moment in the moment

The  Message:

Meditation isn’t a great mystery or something that confounds. It is the simple act of being fully available to the task at hand. It is being all in and single purposed in what you are compelled to do. It isn’t sitting and chanting, but it can be. It isn’t a practice, yet it can be to develop and acquaint one’s self with one’s self more proficiently. To be meditative means to surrender anything that isn’t part of what you are doing and being entirely focused. Dancing, painting, writing, creating, and playing are simple forms of being in the meditative space. Being in love can be meditative as we give ourselves wholly into the experience. It isn’t just mindfulness, it is full beingness and when we can be present with everything, we can then begin to understand a fuller capacities.

The Magic:

Devoting a time in the day when all else goes away and the footsteps make a light sound to feel the impact of the ground… it is a moment to feel the function of the body and the release of the busy mind to appreciate the feeling and intuitive one. When one can simply fall in love with the experience, the moments become magical and appreciative.

Daily Insights : On this 292nd day…
Surrender your steps and observe what you fall into along the path way today.

A Simple Line of Significance

Day 224  August 12
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Application
In The Month of: States of Being United

The labyrinth in Lincoln’s Church, Springfield, IL   Photo Credits: Tourloukis 2007

With historical reference we unite our history with our spiritual significance. Whether we walk with a simple personal memory and reflect on how it shapes who we have become or in a larger sense, realizing how we appreciate  a national treasure for its past presence and live with its benefits better as a result today, our past paths provide presence.  Such is a case of the simple labyrinth that was added to Lincoln’s Church in Springfield, IL. Familiarly it is called Lincoln’s Church, honored by the attendance of Abraham Lincoln’s family, it is formally called the First Presbyterian Church of Springfield.

The Minister of Lincoln’s Church, and his wife, joined our Heartland Labyrinth Circle years ago, traveling three hours, to attend our monthly group activity. Befriending them both, they presented an invitation to visit their labyrinth. Joining them a few months later, a wonderful tour of the church provided a peak into the many levels this church was designed with.  On one of the lower levels was the construction of a simple labyrinth designed with a single strip of black tape.  This  simple design created in a simple way actually served this church well as it was a spiritual home for a very simple President.

State of Illinois with labyrinth designAbraham Lincoln’s simplicity was his genius as was the wisdom of the Minister in opening the smaller congregation to newer ideas. The invitations of the Minister and his wife grew interest and a congregation of families that helped to revive and restore this church that holds reverence for our history and spiritual significance.  Most of my older photos were destroyed of this simple labyrinth, so this is a minor representation of the larger understated labyrinth.

States of United August Focus Banner Image
Opportunities for August

As we traveled the globe in search of exploration and returned with an abundance of realizing the consecutive connectives of the world in June and July, we touched the mere surface of our planet through the eyes of the labyrinth.  In the month of August, we continue the explorative nature looking for what insight brings us to unite. It can be a  discovery of the united purpose that we connect with others, or in the way we bring who we are with what we can and want to do.  What August brings is a focus of how the labyrinth brings state of being united, within ourselves within the United States. Send along the labyrinths, programs, art, and offerings within the United States that you feel best represents this for daily postings.

  1. What Unites
Reach out and share the unique labyrinths in this month within the United States that serve to unite. We look for the unique design, interesting purpose, connected message, in the labyrinth or in the ways we share with others in message or program, art, design and education applied. Share your ideas, programs, purpose images and experiences at the 365 Experience on the TLS website providing some detail of why you design, share, create, build or simply walk, who benefits and how it helps us unite. Personal insight or National perspectives are welcome.
  2. What brings Insight
As we take each day of the 31 available in August exploring what brings us insight with our selves or as a nation through the paths of the Labyrinth.  This quarter focuses on the ways we apply the insight we gain and as we are united with our own insights, may we use them as well in a way that unites us personally and also purposefully with others as a nation united.
  3. Join the online  Mid Month Dialogues Call on Friday August 15th at NOON PST

Walking in Tune

Day 140: May 20
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Education
In The Month of: Celebration

Musical focus labyrinthOne thing that can make something within us move is music. Whether it is the body swaying in synchronization or just a foot tapping along, every part of our brain is activated when music is present. There is quite a lot of wonderful scientific evidence regarding the elevation that it creates and as a result the field of neuromusicology has been developed to study the variety of ways our nervous system responds to music. This of course is not new as ancient cultures revered music and for those who facilitate programs of the labyrinth, music is a natural accompaniment.

In making the Roman Labyrinth round in design with a minor adjustment to the ancient design, what is found at the center, is a musical note. In many ways we walk the labyrinth to attune ourselves to a message, metaphor or meaning. At other times we walk to simply tune in to what is present around us or to a particular question. We are also fine tuning definitions, understandings and ideas and as we find the center, we can find our center and where we might be in tune or out in someway. Our year long message is to discover the chords that make our tune ring true. Enjoy your day with musical accompaniment and observe the simple appreciations and celebrations that occur.

On this 140th day…
Walk with music today so that it is a different walk than you’ve experienced before. Use different music and observe what comes out in steps.

The Month of Celebration, Appreciation and Realization

May’s Focus: Celebration

Life is a celebration to explore in the next 31 days. With the idea of walking the labyrinth and its tri-focus on releasing, receiving and reflecting, let’s shift the perspective to one that walks in with appreciation, finds the honest realization from each day and walks out in celebration.  Observe what 31 days of this focus might reflect and how it elevates our life condition.

Four focus points to expand your celebration of this month’s experience:

  1. Share your ideas, in your personal experiences, how you share the labyrinth with others, art, design or method of construction or in other ways that it may be utilized. Let others know about this daily experience and opportunity by sharing it. Find us on this blog and on the Labyrinth Societies Facebook page
  2. Join our Mid Month Dialogues on May 15th at 2pm CST for a lively look at what you have created and will create in the idea of celebration. This month’s theme was a direct result of our last month’s Mid Month Dialogue!
  3. Participate in the daily opportunity of this educational focus of  your personal journey, how you lead, teach or share with others, and what you create for contribution or purpose with this theme.
  4. Remember that our theme is about finding our greater capacities, abilities and true realities in being honest with our potential. We focus on what we can do as it is inherently more useful and productive.

Moving Expansion

Day 80: March 21
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Awareness
In The Month of: Discover

Triskelion Labyrinth and Peace Symbol entwined @TheAmusedMuse.comOn this new day of spring, the rotational symmetry of the Triskelion design is found in the three spirals that form a triple spiraled labyrinth. It is considered Pre-Celtic as it’s symbol has been found in Malta between 4400-3600 BC. It was found carved in the stones at New Grange, Mycenaean vessels, Lycian coins, and throughout ancient Greece, Italy, Japan, Korea and Tibet. Today we can find its symbolism on areas of motion such as the air corps, the US Department of Transportation fitting it’s name in the origins of the Ancient Greek, Triskeles, which means three legged.  It has been a symbol of both forward motion for understanding and competition. It is also a symbol for greater insight from the present existence to the spiritual and the celestial.

From this perspective we may take this interesting trifecta of spirals and consider the movement of our walk to appreciate the forward understandings that have brought us to this day in time, yet also consider the triple significance of greater existence or like our year of greater realization of potential, a consideration for our present circumstances in our walk with spiritual considerations and the largeness of the celestial existence. It can help us to feel the expansiveness of any current predicament or wonder.

In creating this design of the Triskelion today the three double spirals laid over a peace symbol for its similar triple appeal were separated in color and as a result demonstrated four parts to this tri-named symbol. Three simple Euclidean spirals form the outer experience, yet it is the true center Triskelion symbol that centers it all and adds a greater depth to the spiral of this day and the movement it creates.

A suggestion to walk with:

On this 80th day…
Move in gradual stillness and expansion noticing how graceful both become in you.

March’s Focus

As it is now the third month of the year and our last month of growing awareness before we delve into the ways of education, allow this month be one that creates both the light hearted discovery and profound realization. How can you create more awareness with the labyrinth personally or in the ways you share with others? Where do you notice a spiral effect that takes you to the point or away from it? Be on the lookout for the spiraling nature this month.

  1. Realize
In the 31 Days this month offers, become aware of the daily realizations that you create and discover. Walking daily creates compound interest in what you look forward to and discover each day. Let March become your month of expanded capacity as you walk to make each day and adventure in exploration of what more you can explore. Seek to spiral into new and inspiring realization and whether it is rich and profound or light hearted and amusing… be open, walk with intention and you are bound to come away larger.

2. Surprise
One can realize and find much in the depth of understanding that awareness offers us, though when we look forward to realization of that depth and awareness, it can inspire new ways of appreciation and discovery in both our  process and capabilities as we are constantly growing, no matter what age. Invite the element of  surprise into what you realize as it can lift what you discover into seeing a bit more than before.  Notice the spiral effect of how you move from realize to surprise and make discovery more significant and true.

Christmas Walk of Presence

TLS 365 Experience #300
December 25, 2017

Wishes for PresenceWith Christmas Wishes with blessings we walked our local labyrinth today placing messages on Christmas Cards in the center for our guests. We used the simple concept of Christmas Past to enter, contemplating the moments of memory. Christmas Present was the center focus where indeed we thought of the presents of presence in our life now. The walk of return was for the Christmas Future.

It was a great opportunity to share in between our gathered meal and over coffee and chocolates we enjoyed wonderful reflections.  Every year we have offered this has been different and appreciative.  It never gets old!

TLS 365 Experience #82
May 21, 2017

Sometimes there is pressure and sometimes there is stress.
Sometimes I create it and sometimes I allow it.

It’s times like these that I take out that handy little labyrinth in my pocket and begin to remember what I am doing, why I am doing it and where I am going with it all.

Sometimes I want to savor it and go very slowly, I remember how precious this time is for me.
Sometimes I just want to know the answer so I speed through the experience, it is then that I get the idea that maybe I ought to slow down and review. Amazing how that makes it all clear.
Sometimes I am very present and I ask a question, and sometimes I don’t.
Sometimes I get an immediate answer and sometimes I don’t… it comes in the next metaphor.

The thing about this walk of curiosity, is that when I do it, I never know what to expect… and sometimes, the sometimes is a very telling thing indeed.

Discerning is Learning

TLS 365 Experience #79
May 18, 2017

Listening into the idea of discernment with a group, we discussed the nature of it in ways of movement, listening, globally and universally present, following a truth and understanding that we don’t have to see or know the whole as we begin, though we understand it more completely in the end.

This was merely a conversation that the labyrinth embodies. When we listen and move with presence, we grow into the global awareness that allows us to follow the path honestly. We know we will find a center with reflection.  We realize too, the whole of the experience is found in the steps we take to create it.

I find in the step by step approach on the path, learning is discerning, and discerning is learning.

Commitment’s Message

TLS 365 Experience #76
May 15, 2017

I love to walk the labyrinth and have made it might daily practice.

Over the years there have been times when I wondered why I had made such a commitment and what it was truly offering me on a daily basis. These would be normal questioning of anyone who makes a commitment to a daily practice, as I have many of them.

What I have noticed is that each practice and commitment walks with me through the living of my life. They make me consider, remind me of what is important and bring me into the moment. The more I walk in this way, the more I realize the moment is not something to come to, rather it is already present and the pause is the moment for gratitude. In the labyrinth, it might be the moment of the center or maybe the beginning or ending.

An everyday walk of the labyrinth then becomes an everyday expression of gratitude.

Perceptions of Presence

Labyrinth engraved at Cornwall UK

One would think that there wouldn’t be much we could say about presence except to simply be present. In essence that is the truth without all the decoration or confusion. Though as humans we may know what is true, though it is not always the easiest thing to accept when our values become distracted or constricted.

It does often seem that it is why we are given a lifetime as it takes that long to build up around the truth and sometimes it gets so convoluted even with the simplest of intentions that it can seem near impossible to think the truth can be found.

The labyrinth will be an amazing journey at times becoming our great distraction or our deepest truth. It just depends what we are present to at the time. We are what we think about…all day long.

I think one of the great lessons is in choosing which path to take each day because at the beginning of the day is the fresh newness that invites us to take part. If we carry over yesterday we miss out on the opportunity of this day blessed with its 86,400 seconds of living.

In the darkest of hours they are still our moments to live. I am reminded of the grief moments in life where I have sometimes felt I was wasting my moments in feeling despair, though in truth they were some of the best living moments as it was a time when I truly felt the precious gift of life for what it was. In loss we have the greatest times of value, though because of knowing separation and adjusting to it we know it as a dark time and want to be through it to see the light.

I would think that without that darkness their would be no light and the continual dance between them, frought with emotions unchecked or fearful of feeling, become our daily path destiny. Changeable of course as the process transitions us and the great gift of life awakens again inside of us.

So that’s maybe a little deep for this day, though none the less a truth to consider. It becomes a way to understand presence perhaps as a conversation and perspective.

Thoughts, feelings and actions of being on the curious path,
