Hive Celebrations

Day 131: May 11
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Education
In The Month of: Celebration

A honeycomb labyrinthThe beehive represents community and in communities there are parts that come together to make up the whole. Bees work together to create a harvest and like all communities that pull together there are times of celebration to commemorate special occasions, honor customs or provide ritual.  Bees are essential for our survival because they pollinate up to 1/3 of the world’s food supply, that’s typically one meal a day.  In their small way, the humble bumble bee and the multitude of varieties that make up the world’s bee population exist and produce simply because it is a function of community. It sends an important message about the small steps we take each day in pursuit of a purpose, goal or dream.

Finding six nests in the low hanging rafters that border the side of the house a year ago, I waited till the season had passed before removing them and offering them to a local beekeeper. Today, they are back perhaps to remind of the importance of our role in community. By removing select honeycombed pockets, the gooey wonders of a walk with honey brings a sweet celebration of the steps in this day.

On this 131st day…
Consider your contributions to the many communities you belong to today in your walk and how significant your participation is.

The Month of Celebration, Appreciation and Realization
May’s Focus: Celebration

Life is a celebration to explore in the next 31 days. With the idea of walking the labyrinth and its tri-focus on releasing, receiving and reflecting, let’s shift the perspective to one that walks in with appreciation, finds the honest realization from each day and walks out in celebration.  Observe what 31 days of this focus might reflect and how it elevates our life condition.

Four focus points to expand your celebration of this month’s experience:

  1. Share your ideas, in your personal experiences, how you share the labyrinth with others, art, design or method of construction or in other ways that it may be utilized. Let others know about this daily experience and opportunity by sharing it. Find us on this blog and on the Labyrinth Societies Facebook page
  2. Join our Mid Month Dialogues on May 15th at 2pm CST for a lively look at what you have created and will create in the idea of celebration. This month’s theme was a direct result of our last month’s Mid Month Dialogue!
  3. Participate in the daily opportunity of this educational focus of  your personal journey, how you lead, teach or share with others, and what you create for contribution or purpose with this theme.
  4. Remember that our theme is about finding our greater capacities, abilities and true realities in being honest with our potential. We focus on what we can do as it is inherently more useful and productive.

Day 116: April 26
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Education
In The Month of: Amusement

Day 116 Labyrinth, the wheelHaving spent the better part of the last few days behind the wheel of a car traveling cross country, the wheel became a fascination with circular reality. It purposefully led the direction and where it went straightforward mainly, there were turns and new directions to embrace; each defining the journey and the point of direction. The wheel itself turned left then back to center, right then back to center and continued in a natural way that appreciated the labyrinth and what it can offer in similar migration.

The next time you partake of a journey, consider the directions and redirections made by the simple turn of fate and turn on purpose. Let the wheel of life rotate to bring great directions and reflections.

On this 116th day…
Take a walk today on the labyrinth  and notice turns and directions that guide you. Consider the many turns and directions throughout your day and where they lead.

April's Banner Year of Living Honestly 2018April’s Focus

Let this month unfurl your creativity, spontaneity and jocularity. It feels good to feel good and while we have been conditioned to shush our good times, let the labyrinth be our own private creation station of amusement, enjoyment and playful experiments. This month educate with amusement and see how much farther you get. Have fun and be creative.  We have three opportunities to education your potential with amusement this month that involves either your personal walk, your ability to design and how much you can learn by sharing. On your Mark, Get Set…Go!

  1. Innovate – Walk Amused
In the 30 days that grace this month, play with the way you personally experience the labyrinth. Let this season of education be one of personal bests and enjoy finding a new way to be innovative, creative, inspired and amused in your personal experiences. I’d love to see what you come up with!
    Please share your wonderful experiences!

2. Create – Design Inspired
To date I have created 95 different labyrinth creations and designs since the beginning of the year, let that inspire you to create something new this month that is inspiring and firing for your imagination. Einstein said that playing with ideas was the highest form of research and this is an education for all of us.  As you walk in new ways, share your designs as I have done with mine last year and this. Perfection isn’t what we are after, amusement is! I look forward to seeing what you come up with! I will toss out lots of inspiring ideas… stay tuned daily.
Share away and become a glad designer instead of a mad one!

3. Relate – Share with Care
One of the best ways to learn anything is having to teach or explain it to someone else. Whether you facilitate others, teach or simply share with a few, spend the month discovering amusing new ways to help others get more out of their walk with a lighter attitude and a more earnest enjoyment in what you share. Anything you want to know more about, share and this month share with a fun flair and notice how much more you actually begin to understand. You just might find a side of yourself forgotten. To receive all that, be a great giver.
Share what you discover!

Tetramer Togetherness

Day 81: March 22
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Awareness
In The Month of: Discover

Tetramer Togetherness Labyrinth DesignThe spiral continues to fascinate in its expansiveness and it is no surprise that the spiral of honesty evolves as we grow into our capacities as human beings in the same kind of fascination, to discover we are more than we think we are.  It can also be a spiral in a different direction when we aren’t discovering or have forgotten our values; the key is that the spiral moves as we do. As human beings we can begin to discover that we are  completely full of spirals in our natural design.  Today this design came about as a direct relation to the research into the spirals of the protein molecules, as it is both a labyrinth and a protein molecule. Our bodies are made up of mostly water and protein molecules, so understanding the non fluid side and its relation to the spiral and our walk of the labyrinth becomes a natural curiosity that expands our understanding, which grows our capacity… and the honesty we live with ourself.

Protein molecules are sophisticated in the complexity and function of their structure, having adapted  in chemistry over billions of years; our evolution is a spiraling growth of adaptation.  There are 20 types of standard amino acids in each protein molecule that give it shape and size. They form into chains becoming unique and different. These chains tend to twist, spiral and turn and when observed, the spiral is evident giving an interesting rise to the labyrinth of human origin.

Today’s design is formed from the microscopic four subunits of peptide chains of protein molecules known as a tetramer. In its circle upon circle connected format each of its quadrants has a purpose that join together to produce something greater. As we walk into a new season it might not be such a stretch to realize how the four seasons indeed create a year. That is the nature of the Tetramer to find value in its role and contribution to the greater whole. Similarly where our molecules automatically know what to do to help us grow, as humans we are quite often confused about our role and our contribution. Connect your molecular spirals and internal labyrinth as it seems when we walk in circles, we figure things out.

A suggestion to walk with:

On this 81st day…
Walk in the value of each part you play in many roles of your life and realize  great value independently and to the whole.

March’s Focus

As it is now the third month of the year and our last month of growing awareness before we delve into the ways of education, allow this month be one that creates both the light hearted discovery and profound realization. How can you create more awareness with the labyrinth personally or in the ways you share with others? Where do you notice a spiral effect that takes you to the point or away from it? Be on the lookout for the spiraling nature this month.

  1. Realize
In the 31 Days this month offers, become aware of the daily realizations that you create and discover. Walking daily creates compound interest in what you look forward to and discover each day. Let March become your month of expanded capacity as you walk to make each day and adventure in exploration of what more you can explore. Seek to spiral into new and inspiring realization and whether it is rich and profound or light hearted and amusing… be open, walk with intention and you are bound to come away larger.

2. Surprise
One can realize and find much in the depth of understanding that awareness offers us, though when we look forward to realization of that depth and awareness, it can inspire new ways of appreciation and discovery in both our  process and capabilities as we are constantly growing, no matter what age. Invite the element of  surprise into what you realize as it can lift what you discover into seeing a bit more than before.  Notice the spiral effect of how you move from realize to surprise and make discovery more significant and true.

Imagination

Day 58: February 27
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Awareness
In The Month of: Love

Describing the simple nature of the labyrinth today to a few interested souls, it was a lesson in conveyance. Some had ideas of the maze, others shared they already knew as they had participated in a walk in the past, while others found this new information. It was a discussion without visual imagery available and in this, picking up on the idea of imagination became a wonderful way to open the doors a little wider with possibility. Having a number of different ways to describe its use and purpose, depending upon the audience, there is always a general communication that everyone can relate to well.

Asking them to close their eyes, an impromptu labyrinth meditation came to mind where visualizations could become volumous and what might be received in the experience could be significant to each in their own way. Using the breath as the path, the labyrinth had opportunity to enter the individual in a virtual walk of imagination. Each had a different connection and a unique response to share as we completed. It just may have been the most honest labyrinth walk ever created and one that allowed for the individual to experience as their own personal pilgrimage in a heartfelt manner.

A suggestion to walk with:

On this 59th day…
Walk the labyrinth of your own mind tracing the steps and relating to it differently with imagination as a guide.

February’s Focus

As it is the second month of the year, enjoy two opportunities… discovery and realization.

  1. Discover your Love capacity:
This month’s 28 days will focus on how we are loving the moments we are creating. Learning to be “in love” with our focus, it expands who we are beyond the partnered relational aspects and into the focus of loving what we offer the world, who we are in community, relating at a higher level to everything and everyone; and most significantly,  elevating the relationship we have with ourselves. Prepare for a wonderful experience of exercising the power of love with the freedom of honesty to realize a greater look at possibilities and potential n a delightful way. Discover how capable you are!

2. Realize synchronous evidence:
Inspired by the variety of heart shaped labyrinths, this month capture your experiences with images of the heart. Be on the look out for where the synchronicity of the moments where your heart is in focus and then look around to see where you can find the shape of a heart in symbol. Your awareness will expand and you just might be surprised to find that when we look with an open heart, we can find it in reference near by. It does require a bit of imagination, though the findings are wonderfully worth it. Share all the heart shaped labyrinth images you find with images, links or comments and I will be happy to post the images and moments.

Ides of February

Day 46: February 15
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Awareness
In The Month of: Love

Today is the walk of reflection of what the month has defined in the growing identity and honesty of who we are and what we are purposefully here to do.  It is again, the Ides of the month and a time that marks our half way point through this month of love.  Where the first two weeks bring a suggestion and walks to consider that suggestion in each day, the second half of the month takes what we discover, realize and appreciate and brings the dimension of reflection and purpose to a broader perspective.

We might think of this month as the first half of walking into the experience and the second half of walking out of the experience. How much more aware and evolved do we become when we have had the first half to consider? I’ve often heard that children have second half growth spurts in their annual aging as if the first half of their year was studying, reflecting and contemplating the world and the second half was diving in and exploring what their awareness could be.  Where the concept of discovery and honesty is both simple and deeply profound, appreciate what you do discover and discard anything that isn’t about your growth and discovery.

Here are a few prompts to consider in mid month reflection:

How has what is right and working shown up in your walk?
What is more true today than it was when you began?
What greater appreciation of your walk and yourself do you have?
What has changed in your attitude since the beginning of the year?
What has changed in your life since the beginning of the year?

Always feel free to join in with your thoughts, sharing and offerings that bring more wisdom to this experience.   Correspondence:  365Experience@labyrinthsociety.org

Meaning Assigned

Day 14: January 14
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Awareness
In The Month of: Definition

Sometimes the labyrinth I choose defines the walk and sometimes the walk defines the labyrinth. Years ago when I made a point to travel the expansiveness of the entire state and get to know the labyrinths that were present, I learned the stories of the labyrinth from walking them. What spoke to me emerged from where they were located, the design used, the materials applied and the way it was cared for. I found I could tell a lot about the labyrinth just by walking it. There were rarely any indications as to the intent of any individual labyrinth, only the standard suggestions that most left in signage or pamphlet.

Getting to know the labyrinth we tread upon and the intimacy of time together, comes purely in the moments of created time and observation. It may not seem important to many, though in this walk, however brief, an honest relationship is born and an experience realized. There is much to take in of our surrounding, intent and activity and when we drop into this, it is authenticity defined.  In speaking to people that either provided the care or were responsible for their creation, information that was shared supported the story I felt in walking.

In today’s walk I am reminded of a labyrinth that kept defining itself with deeper and deeper meaning in each path and circuit that appeared. There was no information and no one to speak with; it was simply found in the woods in an area no one seemed to frequent. Further research provided no leads. It became the consequential essential labyrinth; existing for whatever meaning we might wish to give it and for whatever reason we might wish to walk it. Metaphorically; alone in the woods, a truth lies waiting.

A suggestion to walk with:

What meaning brings life to your walk today?

A Fine Vine

TLS 365 Experience #291
December 16, 2017

A Labyrinth Vineyard in South AfricaYears ago when looking for holiday gifts, I ran across several wines with a labyrinth name. As my brother in law was a wine salesmen, it seemed the perfect gift from a Labyrinth enthusiast. Investigating further, there was one choice really to settle on as in reading their information, looking up more and later talking to a representative,

I learned that they had indeed planted the first vineyard labyrinth in 2003. In drinking the wine,  one would essentially have enjoyed a taste from each of the vines that made up the labyrinth. It was the name that caught my attention, Labyrinth 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon by Simonsig, the conversation and the purpose and mission in creating that sold me. It also made a wonderful auction item too and turned out to be a very decent wine.

Realized Purpose

TLS 365 Experience #265
November 20, 2017

The labyrinth at our Health Center had been received with such enthusiasm only a year ago upon its unveiling, and I wondered as I walked it alone, where were the people using it today? There used to be many and I liked when I was with others, it gave me a sense that this was a tool of purpose; even when I didn’t understand it. The more often I walked it, the more I began to fall away from what I thought it was, to what it became for me.

One day in walking, I began to realize where there were many disagreements in our department, and though they do get smoothed over, the realization of how beneficial the labyrinth would be in smoothing over more of them. In fact, if they used this regularly, there just might be less of those disagreements and more time and energy for creative use.  Walking further, it dawned, that retention is something we gain by using, understanding and realizing importance and purpose. Maybe if I had stopped walking it, I wouldn’t fully understand what I do now.

By the time I finished my walk, I realized a greater value in what I could offer to re-stimulate the labyrinth by sharing my own discovery of repetitive use. I wrote an article and created a walk for our department. Later I created some walks for the center and then for the community. It was in the walking and practice that I learned how to be of value and purpose for myself and my center too. Do what interests you and share it, then you really add.

All Souls Walk

TLS 365 Experience #246
November 1, 2017

A walk on the labyrinth for All Souls Day in the midstIt is the day of All Saints and Souls and post Halloween. It is a day where the veil lies thin across the universe allowing for our time of remembering to move us from the merriment into the meaningful.

As I walk the labyrinth today I am both reminded of the fun and frolic of the light hearted youthful nature the night before and the nature of spirit in the ancestors who have walked their own path. It moves the seriousness of this day into one not to fear, but revere.

Both bring an essence of spirit and as I walk with my ancestors, I am reminded of where I came and what my heritage has brought forth. I am evolved in this heritage as every generation is, walking forth with what has mattered to many before me. As I move from path to path, I call forth the different souls and saints that come to mind in prayer and affirmed gratitudes for their different kind of presence in my world.

It is a day to find the center and mark thoughts of purpose and presents for the souls of the world that walk with us past and present.

Messages of Meaning

TLS 365 Experience #239
October 25, 2017

Messages of Meaning... You are an insightful Wonder, thank you for being.... cards and affirmation of labyrinth appreciation... anonymous

For years I have made design after design and given them away on cards with affirmative quotes for others.

It is my labyrinth mission and one of great purpose and practice that provides a path to giving.

I receive creativity and more of it when I give. The messages uplift me as I hope they might others in the moment they reach for the card.
