Mid Month Reflections

Day 15: January 15
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Awareness
In The Month of: Definition
Today is the walk of reflection of what the month has defined in honesty so far and thoughts of what we might like it to provide for the remainder. It is the Ides of the month and a time that I think brings us into a better place to communicate with honest insight. I’ve been a part of and have run many programs and life development games  that give the instruction at the beginning and give the opportunity to exercise activities throughout the month, though one of my favorites is the Game of Confusion where our essential work is done in the middle of the month.

As we have been in the process without any rules and only the suggestion of defining what honesty is to us and utilizing the tool of the labyrinth to excavate it, the time has come to uncover what was discovered. In today’s walk, reflect upon the previous days from January 1st until today. Consider the experiences you created and how they defined what honesty is to you.

Here are a few prompts to consider:

How has what is right and working shown up in your walk?
What is more true today than it was when you began?
What greater appreciation of your walk and yourself do you have?
What has changed in your attitude since the beginning of the year?
What has changed in your life since the beginning of the year?

Mid month will be the time of open discussion for any that care to share. (See Below) It is a time to consider what has been and what will be based on your current considerations of this year of living honestly. In this month of defining, it is a look at what we have defined and how it brings the truth, trust and our own life code into the picture. In this way we can also evaluate what is of service and adjust what is not. By the year’s end we will come up with some truly great reflections about how we made our honesty work for us.  Do join in or send me a note:  365Experience@labyrinthsociety.org

A suggestion to walk with:

Today whatever shows up in your walk, ask yourself, is it true?

Idle Insights

Day 11: January 11
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Awareness
In The Month of: Definition

The idle moments can provide a useful reflection of what we do in the waiting periods of our lives. Today was met with doctor calls and hospital visits. Lots of time in between and no labyrinth to walk in the waiting, though there is always a way when we get clear about our intentions. Labyrinths in hospitals provide a benefit to waiting family members, patients, staff and community in a variety of ways. On the other side of town, there is a labyrinth at one of the hospitals so the pattern has been established and the labyrinth made on paper today might well become the labyrinth of this hospital in the future.

The test of time and patience walked in my fingers today and with the reflection in being honest with myself about expectation and defining the results, the clarity of the walk wasn’t about whether I would find function with my time or more patience, it was about how much I would create with the time in between. Once the question of being honest with the circumstance and myself was on the table, there wasn’t a need to search; leaving only wide open wonder to explore with what was available.

A suggestion to walk with:

Between drama or dreams, which is honest?

Contribution

TLS 365 Experience #215
October 1, 2017

Illinois Labyrinth focused on Contribution

October begins the last chapter of the TLS 365 Experience for 2017 and the topic is all about Contribution.  Walking on this theme this morning it seems like it would be no surprise to meet others on the walk who wanted to know a bit more. It was in meeting individuals who wanted to add a labyrinth for their community that the topic really made me smile.

Everyone of us contributes and without even knowing it most likely.  In your walk of this day, consider the value of what the labyrinth represents and how you are contributing with it. Maybe you have been contributed to by others?  It can be as simple as answering a question for someone, or as large as creating a community for understanding and using it. It can also be just showing up and supporting another’s efforts…

Share your story with us and acknowledge your efforts and those of others, together we make a wonderful contribution for awareness, understanding, and the application of the labyrinth.

Asked and Answered

TLS 365 Experience #204
September 20, 2017

“Calm and Collected.”

This was my response to an individual who inquired of my experience after walking the labyrinth. They had observed though not intruded as I took steps on the path and where I felt my reserve flowing, they sat with inquisitive wonder.

They asked about the labyrinth itself having read a little, though wanted to know the introspective of a walker and I was happy to share my experiences. I found myself called to service in my explanation and listening to what they wanted as I responded about the basics of a labyrinth. It seemed they wanted more, so shared a story and some insights and that is what made a difference.

I noted a sense of dipping of the toes, like the first step of the labyrinth and then a comfort in the walk to share the information desired and the turns from the questions to answer more fully. Deepening with personal introspection neared the conversation to finding the center point that brought their inquisitiveness and my sharing to a conclusion. Asked and answered fount a mutual completion, like the goal or center of the labyrinth.

It takes the walk and the practice to notice how much we operate as the labyrinth over time.

Questions and Answers

TLS 365 Experience #177
Aug. 24, 2017

It was a beautiful day and one of relative calm to walk the labyrinth as a group. We had a painted design outdoors and a canvas labyrinth we had intended to use indoors. With the warmth and call of nature, we opted to move outdoors with intention to walk the labyrinth noting and answering the questions that were affixed to the borders with Post It Notes along the path. As we independently found our answers, we wrote them out in brevity each on a separate post it note and stuck it to the path border where ever we happened to be in the moment of realization.

As our walk progressed, post it notes created our borders with questions and answers. When all had completed we took another walk and found how interestingly enough the answers to a previous question found themselves situated with a different question. It was  a wonderful way to appreciate the value of questions and answers and afterwards in our sharing circle, the conversation grew rich in the discussion about how are questions become our answers and how the answers created questions. In the midst of our communication, a gust of heavy wind stirred up from the otherwise calm day and this unexpected force blew the post it notes into the air and off the painted lines of the labyrinth.

It was as if our questions and answers had come to life, reinforcing our conversation to dance in the sky together as they uplifted with the wind into a recycled purpose. It furthered our appreciation for the walk, the sharing and the messages that came. We couldn’t have planned a better ending or perspective.

The Temperature of Gratitude

TLS 365 Experience #141
July 19, 2017

It is so hot that the air seems to be sitting on top of a furnace unmoving allowing the atmosphere to swell and take up what might be left for natural breath.

I came outside this evening in hopes to cool a bit, though it is just as hot outside it seems and as I sit wondering of a way to cool, I look out upon the labyrinth looking for a switch to relieve the intensity. I am used to asking questions of the labyrinth and find a gratitude of the heart in what it answers, knowing it is but a sequential structure for my mind to relax and inner knowing to flow, though it is nice to be able to extend the gratitude outward and get my heart and mind reprogrammed a bit.

It is in this thinking that I rise and move toward the labyrinth in this question of cooler solutions. I walk in and consider that maybe stillness wouldn’t work up a sweat, though I move on. As I move more in quite and subtle ways I begin to consider coolness. As I traverse the paths I remember my body in cool and relaxed ways. I seem to find a calm and a cooler perspective by the time I have reached the center and with much gratitude I begin a coolness meditation with my focus and breath as I walk each pathway and when I arrive at the end.

I find that this discussion has changed my inabilities and found an inner reserve that adapts, speaks and blissfully relaxes the anxieties of the heat. Mind and body are relaxed, ready to rest and appreciating the opportunity to question and answer.

Sometimes

TLS 365 Experience #82
May 21, 2017

Sometimes there is pressure and sometimes there is stress.
Sometimes I create it and sometimes I allow it.

It’s times like these that I take out that handy little labyrinth in my pocket and begin to remember what I am doing, why I am doing it and where I am going with it all.

Sometimes I want to savor it and go very slowly, I remember how precious this time is for me.
Sometimes I just want to know the answer so I speed through the experience, it is then that I get the idea that maybe I ought to slow down and review. Amazing how that makes it all clear.
Sometimes I am very present and I ask a question, and sometimes I don’t.
Sometimes I get an immediate answer and sometimes I don’t… it comes in the next metaphor.

The thing about this walk of curiosity, is that when I do it, I never know what to expect… and sometimes, the sometimes is a very telling thing indeed.
