364 Unbirthdays

Day 146: May 26
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Education
In The Month of: Celebration

The labyrinth among birthday aftermathAfter the annual pilgrimage of another year sets in, what does the next day look like? There is much in celebration and anticipation that arrives with any impending event, though when the event has made its arrival and completes, where do we find ourselves in the emergence of a new voyage? It reflects an altogether different kind of realization, appreciation and celebration.

In our annual trip around the Sun, we move from a single step at the beginning and encounter a wide variety of experiences in our journey to the center of the labyrinth. Similarly our reverse path can be seen as a half year point, the shadow side of our walk, or even the inner experience to name a few of the many ways we might interpret our walk to full circle completion. It is the wisdom of those 364 different journeys that we do the living and the one day in which we give attention to appreciating those steps. The Unbirthday is the walk of awareness, education, application and contributions that make the birthday fully what it is.  For that one singular sensation that we give much attention to, much goes into making it so and when we stop to consider value in the Unbirthday, we can find a richness in the realization of how much it carries.

This double labyrinth design allows for many opportunities, though in the land of the Unbirthday, one could walk one side remembering the promise and messages of the birthday and then take that into the other side of each day of the unbirthday to keep a focus, dream or goal of the birthday.

On this 146th day…
Celebrate the new freshness of your first step today and let it be a great realization of how the others are placed to make it count.

The Month of Celebration, Appreciation and Realization

May’s Focus: Celebration

Life is a celebration to explore in the next 31 days. With the idea of walking the labyrinth and its tri-focus on releasing, receiving and reflecting, let’s shift the perspective to one that walks in with appreciation, finds the honest realization from each day and walks out in celebration.  Observe what 31 days of this focus might reflect and how it elevates our life condition.

Four focus points to expand your celebration of this month’s experience:

  1. Share your ideas, in your personal experiences, how you share the labyrinth with others, art, design or method of construction or in other ways that it may be utilized. Let others know about this daily experience and opportunity by sharing it. Find us on this blog and on the Labyrinth Societies Facebook page
  2. Join our Mid Month Dialogues on May 15th at 2pm CST for a lively look at what you have created and will create in the idea of celebration. This month’s theme was a direct result of our last month’s Mid Month Dialogue!
  3. Participate in the daily opportunity of this educational focus of  your personal journey, how you lead, teach or share with others, and what you create for contribution or purpose with this theme.
  4. Remember that our theme is about finding our greater capacities, abilities and true realities in being honest with our potential. We focus on what we can do as it is inherently more useful and productive.

Pause for Reflection

Day 135: May 15
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Education
In The Month of: Celebration

Mid Month Calendar Labyrinth

Tis the Ides of the month in the middle of May and a time to mark your calendars as having reached the 135th day of the year marking that we are more than a third of the way through the year at 37%.  On this day we join in dialogue and celebrate what we have found significant in the first half of the month, how it has helped us to realize more of who we are and what we are capable of and how we might have appreciated our journey of discovery so far this month.

The second half of our month offers a chance with realization to celebrate and appreciate in a different way, the things that come across our path, make our trails or migrations that we intentionally design.

Find your significant places on the labyrinth this month, one for each celebration you have created. Rejoice, appreciate and look forward to adding markers of celebration to the second half of your month.

On this 135th day…
In your walk of this day, celebrate what you have realized and appreciated in the month this far.

Welcome May

Day 121: May 1
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Education
In The Month of: Celebration

Celebration confetti and balloons rising from the labyrinthIn this year of living honestly we look at the ways we can evolve our understanding of ourselves, our purpose with the labyrinth and our connection to others in the way we share it or comprehend larger meanings. We focus on quarterly concepts such as the awareness we’ve appreciated in the first and the concept of education for ourselves and the way we use the labyrinth with others in these three months. Our focus changes to add ways to appreciate that education differently and while we used the power of amusement to widen our focus, this month’s exploration focuses on the idea of celebration.

Life is a gift to celebrate daily. Life also offers us adversity and many of our former lessons have focused on overcoming and surviving that time for appreciating the celebrations becomes the thing we do for special occasions. Living the idea of celebration through appreciation and realization is an opportunity in the next 30 days to walk differently, share differently and care differently in the month of  May. Look forward to sharing innovations and creations, sharing in our mid month dialogues and taking steps to create a celebratory experience in this month.

Defining Lines of Imagination

Day 18: January 18
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Awareness
In The Month of: Definition

The call for an early morning walk brought an experience of what I would call a semi labyrinth and an opportunity. There seemed to be a directive in my steps and fond remembrance to come to this vacant area where just over a year ago I created a peace labyrinth on parachute material.

At the time a tarp was used underneath, though a surprising realization of paint where the outer edges bled through to leave left an impression of surprise to myself as well as on the concrete surface below.  I thought to repaint the surface at the time, though with predicted rains assumed it would most likely wash the traces away. The honesty defined in this moment brought forth a happy and higher regard for the durability of the paint used and simultaneously,  a responsibility of restoration to leave it a place better than when found.

Presented before me today was a walk of partiality with a charge to restore the area to its former status or to develop it in a better way.  I made the most out of the experience by deciding to walk right into the dilemma and use what was available.  It was an honest walk and a veritable look at the footprints we create. While I could walk the clear lines of the outer edges, the internal lines called for memory and imagination. What were clear were the external memories of my labors, and what was unclear was the imaginative internal structure.

As soon as I stepped into the imaginative uncharted pathways, I knew I would develop it to a more purposeful use rather than a mere resurfacing. My thoughts and actions often tend to lean toward not just making a place better for having found it, but better because of the way we experience and inhabit it. Blocks away from a school and historically vacant, a labyrinth here might be put to better use with this addition than without. I realized I could bring a little paint at a time and enjoy the unfolding process of the creation over time in it’s gradual development.

A suggestion to walk with:

Create a way to make something better today because you were there.

Honest Discoveries

Day 8: January 8
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Awareness
In The Month of: Definition

The Huntridge Park LabyrinthA whole new perspective was appreciated today in the walk of a labyrinth I have not visited in about a year. Being an unusually warm day, the park that is usually vacant was an eye opener to realize either a new use as a place for the homeless or one I had not known before. There were only about 20 individuals and some were clustered in groups, though each found a welcome refuge in the park. As I walked the labyrinth a few discoursed political and conspiratorial without concern of my presence, which served to remind me that I had ventured into their territory. Their plight couldn’t help become part of my walk and as I noted how the park had been updated and somewhat cared for since my last visit, it seemed only natural for those seeking a haven to perhaps feel the extra care as well.

There is an overly large center in the middle of the labyrinth, where a singular tree branches out as an expanse of shelter and coverage where in the intensity of the summer heat, it might provide some needed relief. Thoughts of this relief occurred as I arrived at the center of my walk and as I meandered around the large open space, I noticed a car that had been sitting for some time parked next to mine. A woman and man emerged with bags and set up a line of these that stretched about 20 feet and contained clothing, shoes, totes and items for warmth. Slowly the park’s population took notice and migrated over to investigate and procure what might satisfy a need. I suddenly realized I had bags of collected coats to donate in the trunk of my car that I might have driven away with and not remembered until later.  An honest and grateful moment awakened me as to good intentions that were not yet carried out.

As my walk completed and I met the couple, the discovery of their project of community care fit the criteria for another project I had been involved with that made a great collaboration. When I looked back at the labyrinth, my walk must have sparked curiosity as there were now park occupants walking. It began as a simple walk and became a day of greater appreciation for the homeless community, personal realizations and new connections.

A suggestion to walk with:

What do we do with our honest discoveries on the labyrinth?

Realized Walk

TLS 365 Experience #290
December 15, 2017

This is the happy walk of realization!
When working on a project, idea or creation, walking on it over the months has produced little bits of important information. Where walking on it more has created new and different insights. Walking even more in those curiously blocked moments has developed a range of perspective not otherwise noticed. Then when all those moments, in those walks of inquiry, release and prayer have found their saturation point, there is one more walk left. It is the moment of happy realization in the completion, appreciation of the struggle and affirmation of the goal. This is the walk we wait for and when it is said and done, we look for the next idea or project to come.

A Walk with Ribbons

TLS 365 Experience #285
December 10, 2017

As I wrapped another gift, the box of ribbons tipped over and landed in a pile on the floor. Sitting down to re sort them in the box, I realized how easy it’s become to see circles in circles and understand the nature of the flowing ribbons of life.  As I sorted the ribbons, I played with them a bit creating a labyrinth of ribbons. It brought back a time out on the labyrinth with others twirling silk ribbons and feeling the wonderful flow being created.

Putting my fingers through the walk, I enjoyed the idea of ribbons winding and unwinding resembling the weaving and movement that is all around us.  Stories have a way of unraveling to create meaning. Events can just trail on in the meandering way of a ribbon, noting that they all have a point that one gets to, even if it isn’t in the center. I find unwinding is often the point. From the release or increase of mind or body and the greater mysteries of  the flow of life life to the simplicity of adding a ribbon to enhance and decorate, the ribbon can be a quiet symbol of significance.

As I completed and put the ribbons back in the box and reordered life, I stood in the realization of the enjoyable moments and memories made in the moment of mishap.

Exercising Variety

TLS 365 Experience #283
December 7, 2017

Coming out to find some air, the labyrinth in the garden seemed to invite some blood circulation with a walk. Rubbing palms together and pulling the scarf around my neck, I enjoyed the cool snap of crisp air as I entered. Thinking of it as an exercise, pumping arms and marching steps became part of the movement.

As I was getting into the movement, another joined me on the labyrinth. I had a moment of hesitation as it seemed a private experience and interruptive of another’s quiet time. Just as I was about to surrender my large movements, the other woman did the same arm circles and called out, “Great idea!”.  As we both continued to exercise the labyrinth, we were joined by others who had been watching from inside and soon we had to watch out in our thrusting of arms and legs, not to make a harmful connection.

It became a cheering experience of movement and amusing connection that invigorated all of us. It was also a chance to realize a different experience of the labyrinth, rather than the quiet mindful walks I have known. Realization on the labyrinth comes in many forms and today I moved myself in a variety of ways.

Change on the Path

TLS 365 Experience #227
October 13, 2017

In our classes on Prosperity and Abundance we thought to bring the community into an exchange idea, so for the month we invited our participants to walk the labyrinth everyday or as many days as they found possible. When they did they were to bring change in their pockets and based on ideas we were sharing, leave some change on the border of the labyrinth where the moment of realization occurred. Whatever they pulled from their pocket was to be left and the walk was to carry on.

As they circled around with the ideas, each time they gravitated to the new ideas being shared and could see the way they could incorporate it. At the moment of realization they were to notice if change was on the path or border where they stood, if so they could pick it up and take it with them, noticing what the total amount was to carry out their plan. Money was left out all month and there was always something on the path to resemble both the changes being made and the change they were concentrating on in a monetary sense.

By the end of the month this simple concept worked well in our ideas and goals and many realizations had become new thoughts and realities for many. We proved our point that change was always on our path and when we let go of what we didn’t require, others might be able to use it to inspire at different times and at different times, we might be those individuals either releasing or increasing.

Unwind and Unbind

TLS 365 Experience #126
July 4, 2017

blue labyrinthOn this day of Independence,  I walk alone bringing back a memory of a group that had a focus on coming into their independence. The labyrinth was a natural compliment as it allows for a sense of liberation and freedom when we release the mind from the busy matters and unwind what is tangled in the body too.

There are so many different ways in which we feel we lose our natural ability and many times we constrict it ourself with tension or closing our mind. The walk of circular spiraling energy that moves us with purpose in an unwinding fashion naturally relaxes our grip and offers us a sense of freedom.

Where the group I led created their own dialogue from the question of what gives you freedom and what takes it away; the messages ranged from what was personal to world concerns. The metaphor of their messages came down to the realization that if we each take care of knowing what binds us and move in this way that unwinds us, our individual independence becomes world liberty.
