Getting Natural with What’s Natural

Day 227  August 15
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Application
In The Month of: States of Being United

The natural landscape of the Southwest is something to whole heartedly embrace. With picturesque mountains and open sky, there is a goodness of nature that beckons a call to spend time immersing ourselves. We often don’t notice the absence of the daily cacophony of noise or talk, as the mountains echo with silence and small sounds in a way that helps us to remember. Our spirits can be renewed and revitalized when we grant ourselves permission to discover the innate qualities of our human possibilities and unite them again in divine order.

Just above Flannigan’s Inn at the hilltop beyond the accommodations and services, and situated almost at the entrance of Zion National Park, the labyrinth of contemplation awaits. With all that surrounds an individual on a hike, climbing or simply enjoying the area, the labyrinth can actually be a tool to ground, listen, feel and recall what it is to use more of our sensory perception.

State of Utah as a labyrinth
With a simple walk, we can become aware of what we are coming aware of. That just might be the purpose of this concrete continuous ring of ancient design that is present to provide a number of services, including the soul reattachment commented here. Weddings, ceremonies, events and more are appreciated on this labyrinth located in the southern area of Utah in the town of Springdale.

Daily Insights : On this 227th day…
Explore your own natural perceptions in sensory expansion as you walk today.

Opportunities for August

As we traveled the globe in search of exploration and returned with an abundance of realizing the consecutive connectives of the world in June and July, we touched the mere surface of our planet through the eyes of the labyrinth.  In the month of August, we continue the explorative nature looking for what insight brings us to unite. It can be a  discovery of the united purpose that we connect with others, or in the way we bring who we are with what we can and want to do.  What August brings is a focus of how the labyrinth brings state of being united, within ourselves within the United States. Send along the labyrinths, programs, art, and offerings within the United States that you feel best represents this for daily postings.

  1. What Unites
Reach out and share the unique labyrinths in this month within the United States that serve to unite. We look for the unique design, interesting purpose, connected message, in the labyrinth or in the ways we share with others in message or program, art, design and education applied. Share your ideas, programs, purpose images and experiences at the 365 Experience on the TLS website providing some detail of why you design, share, create, build or simply walk, who benefits and how it helps us unite. Personal insight or National perspectives are welcome.
  2. What brings Insight
As we take each day of the 31 available in August exploring what brings us insight with our selves or as a nation through the paths of the Labyrinth.  This quarter focuses on the ways we apply the insight we gain and as we are united with our own insights, may we use them as well in a way that unites us personally and also purposefully with others as a nation united.
  3. Join the online  Mid Month Dialogues Call on Friday August 15th at NOON PST
Be curious, research and share what you know of unique United States labyrinths, the people, the programs, the designs, the resources or simply the desires in the first half of the month and apply something that you find unique to your own life walk. Join us on the Mid Month Dialogues to share what you discovered, ask questions and hear from others about what they explored and discovered. Walk a Smile in Your Mile

Day 94: April 4
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Education
In The Month of: Amusement

Walk a Smile

This was a labyrinth created for a conference in 2008, ten years ago this month.  It made everyone feel happier. We shared a discourse on happiness, joy and positive experiences and what made them so.

With a few exercises and activities to help individuals tap into the differences between knowing what each was cognitively and experiencing them with sensory and emotion, the overall walk allowed for moments of reality expression that was healthy for each participant and definitely happier for everyone.

Each left with a smile on their face and in our workshop helping to accomplish our goal and elevate the mood of the whole conference.

On this 94th day…
Breathe in and exhale into a smile as you walk each length of path today, as you turn, repeat until you reach the center. Reflect and repeat as you return.

April's Banner Year of Living Honestly 2018April’s Focus

Let this month unfurl your creativity, spontaneity and jocularity. It feels good to feel good and while we have been conditioned to shush our good times, let the labyrinth be our own private creation station of amusement, enjoyment and playful experiments. This month educate with amusement and see how much farther you get. Have fun and be creative.  We have three opportunities to education your potential with amusement this month that involves either your personal walk, your ability to design and how much you can learn by sharing. On your Mark, Get Set…Go!

  1. Innovate – Walk Amused
In the 30 days that grace this month, play with the way you personally experience the labyrinth. Let this season of education be one of personal bests and enjoy finding a new way to be innovative, creative, inspired and amused in your personal experiences. I’d love to see what you come up with!
    Please share your wonderful experiences!

2. Create – Design Inspired
To date I have created 95 different labyrinth creations and designs since the beginning of the year, let that inspire you to create something new this month that is inspiring and firing for your imagination. Einstein said that playing with ideas was the highest form of research and this is an education for all of us.  As you walk in new ways, share your designs as I have done with mine last year and this. Perfection isn’t what we are after, amusement is! I look forward to seeing what you come up with! I will toss out lots of inspiring ideas… stay tuned daily.
Share away and become a glad designer instead of a mad one!

3. Relate – Share with Care
One of the best ways to learn anything is having to teach or explain it to someone else. Whether you facilitate others, teach or simply share with a few, spend the month discovering amusing new ways to help others get more out of their walk with a lighter attitude and a more earnest enjoyment in what you share. Anything you want to know more about, share and this month share with a fun flair and notice how much more you actually begin to understand. You just might find a side of yourself forgotten. To receive all that, be a great giver.
Share what you discover!

Tickling the Thalamus

Day 87: March 28
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Awareness
In The Month of: Discover

A Thalamus TickleAs we admire the many turns and redirects of the labyrinth’s path, we might relate it to the folds in the brain that appear to navigate a similar path. The soft matter the brain is made of however doesn’t allow for a navigation through it, rather this area of the cerebrum is made up of grey and white matter which consist of nerve cells and fibers.  What may appear to be tubes are really folds in the brain. The Cerebrum makes up 85% of the brain mass, though it works in conjunction with 10 other regions in four lobes in two hemispheres to produce the full function as command center for the nervous system; that is a lot of work for something that takes up only two percent of our body mass.

We activate the nervous system when we walk in the spiral that is the labyrinth. The relaxing setting and the movement move blood flow away from the subgenual prefrontal cortex, the area responsible for repetitive tasks, allowing us to move more easily without our busy interruptors. The more we spiral into a central point, the more we relax stress on our nervous system and give our 86 billion nerve cells a happy little vacation. When we take this path of stepping away from being busy and into a healthier habit we reap many benefits that the nervous system cheers about. Debunk the myth that the hemispheres of the brain are only for certain aspects, the whole brain is happy when you walk a winding path.

Today’s design spiral of the labyrinthic  brain moves up the brain stem through the cerebellum before making the journey that traverses the folds of the cerebrum. It completes in finding a center moving past the corpus callosum that connects the two hemispheres and into the Thalamus. This is the area that acts as a nucleus of relay passing information between subcortical areas and the cerebral cortex. It activates all the sensory systems aside from the olfactory and so makes a great place to center and reframe when when taking a walk through the brain.

A suggestion to walk with:

On this 87th day…
Experience the subgenual shift in your walk and observe the Thalamic center as one of heightened awareness of the messages passing though.

March’s Focus

As it is now the third month of the year and our last month of growing awareness before we delve into the ways of education, allow this month be one that creates both the light hearted discovery and profound realization. How can you create more awareness with the labyrinth personally or in the ways you share with others? Where do you notice a spiral effect that takes you to the point or away from it? Be on the lookout for the spiraling nature this month.

  1. Realize
In the 31 Days this month offers, become aware of the daily realizations that you create and discover. Walking daily creates compound interest in what you look forward to and discover each day. Let March become your month of expanded capacity as you walk to make each day and adventure in exploration of what more you can explore. Seek to spiral into new and inspiring realization and whether it is rich and profound or light hearted and amusing… be open, walk with intention and you are bound to come away larger.

2. Surprise
One can realize and find much in the depth of understanding that awareness offers us, though when we look forward to realization of that depth and awareness, it can inspire new ways of appreciation and discovery in both our  process and capabilities as we are constantly growing, no matter what age. Invite the element of  surprise into what you realize as it can lift what you discover into seeing a bit more than before.  Notice the spiral effect of how you move from realize to surprise and make discovery more significant and true.

Activating Sensory

Day 4: January 4
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Awareness
In The Month of: Definition

Meditation is simple. It is being in the moment of whatever you are doing in a full and present way. Not always easy, but simple in its plan. The flow and cycle of breath can be a simple meditation, though keeping one’s focus on the breath is often distracted by thoughts from the mind. This is where the labyrinth in its walking form keeps one in the flow of meditation as the focus is on the movement where the busy mind unwinds in the traversing pattern and relaxes interruptive thought.

Today’s walk used the double intuipath finger design. Meant for the connection of two, it can serve as a quieting or connection of both hemispheres of the brain. In the dark all sense is heightened, and touch, our first sense, is magnified. Tracing the pattern becomes a synchronized movement that unites what opposes and in the dark the definition of both labor and labyrinth, also become one in experience. It creates a deep listening that encompasses what lays beyond sound. In the dark, feeling is intensified and breath finds a slower more efficient rhythm. It defines the experience, realizing more of the intricate and finite nuances that blend and in this way arrives at an honest and complete expression of the moment.

It is a definition of an honest use of our faculties and an appreciable way to intimately know the lines and patterns of the labyrinth. It is a falling away of everything that is not truth for a great revealing.

What is defined in the intimate listening in the walk of today?

TLS 365 Experience 2018: The Year of Living Honestly

Whether it’s a daily walk, teaching others, sharing an experience, expressions of art, building or design, we explore the questions of what brings us to honesty in our use of the labyrinth.

In a world of emerging truth, the labyrinth is a great experience to discover more of what is right and true about ourselves and humanity. Join us in sharing the honest moments it reveals.

An Honest Welcome

Today I wanted to stretch into the new year. To take my time and get to know it before making any kind of proclamations, declarations or insinuations. Not one to make resolutions, I think I will take the first week to explore this full moon welcoming. Where others around me are in some kind of hurry, I am honestly not and happy to just take it like the labyrinth, one step at a time.

So I waited til the evening to take my walk and chose the Grace of the Desert Labyrinth to explore the welcome message that 2018 was keeping for me. At first it seemed to be one of silence, moving as I was called and listening to; and then as the dusk turned to the evening’s darkness I realized I received both the benefit of day and night in waiting until I was ready. It seemed a little backwards to move into the experience where I could see all and end where  vision was challenged. We tend to walk in with the darkness and move to the light, so loved the contrary oddness in the message to do it my way and walk from the lightness into the dark. It was just honest!

I realized that what I think I know and what I think I see isn’t always what I know and see when I move away from the ritual of regularity.

Anatomy of a Question

TLS 365 Experience #200
September 16, 2017

When I walk the labyrinth, it is often to bring up thoughts, feelings, ideas and questions that are floating around inside of me and wish an external outlet. As I take steps onto the path I am headed inward and the awareness of my body, mind and soul alignment are brought to my attention.

Sensory perception awakens constriction and location.  The more steps that traverse the path inward, the more the emergence of emotion and logic that arise, observe without intrusion. The walking body negotiates the turns and sets the pace of function and as the application of movement spirals inwards traversing the pattern of back and forth, the gentle rocking of what is unimportant loosens and releases the unnecessary in the constriction.

By the time the center has been reached in the labyrinth, the falling away of what is not relevant reveals a true question from the former constriction. The question can now more uniquely fit to evolve circumstance. Knowing a true question, makes finding the walk of the answer one of application and allowance. The walk of reverse is where the additions become the discoveries and the journey to the answer is one of purposeful and practical curiosity.

Natural Sole

TLS 365 Experience #130
July 8, 2017

Walking naturally and with sole appreciationI enjoy feeling connected to the labyrinth in my walk.

I really appreciate the times when a natural meeting of my barefoot being integrates with the path of purpose for the moment. It brings a sense of organic freedom and I notice I move differently than when I walk in shoes.

I seem to feel each step more intimately and integrate the experience with a greater sensory perception. I feel the coolness of the stone and notice the unevenness of the pattern. I become aware of the leaves, twigs and seeds that have become windswept onto the path now with touch, sound and visual encounter.

As I complete my experience, I am reminded of how much more I absorbed, as I attempt to brush away the sand, leaves and particles tucked into the crevices of the labyrinth that have imprinted new patterned indents into my sole.  I can reflect perhaps a little more expansively on the patterns and impressions that have been left upon my soul when I walk in this natural way.
