With historical reference we unite our history with our spiritual significance. Whether we walk with a simple personal memory and reflect on how it shapes who we have become or in a larger sense, realizing how we appreciate  a national treasure for its past presence and live with its benefits better as a result today, our past paths provide presence.  Such is a case of the simple labyrinth that was added to Lincoln’s Church in Springfield, IL. Familiarly it is called Lincoln’s Church, honored by the attendance of Abraham Lincoln’s family, it is formally called the First Presbyterian Church of Springfield.

The Minister of Lincoln’s Church, and his wife, joined our Heartland Labyrinth Circle years ago, traveling three hours, to attend our monthly group activity. Befriending them both, they presented an invitation to visit their labyrinth. Joining them a few months later, a wonderful tour of the church provided a peak into the many levels this church was designed with.  On one of the lower levels was the construction of a simple labyrinth designed with a single strip of black tape.  This  simple design created in a simple way actually served this church well as it was a spiritual home for a very simple President.

State of Illinois with labyrinth designAbraham Lincoln’s simplicity was his genius as was the wisdom of the Minister in opening the smaller congregation to newer ideas. The invitations of the Minister and his wife grew interest and a congregation of families that helped to revive and restore this church that holds reverence for our history and spiritual significance.  Most of my older photos were destroyed of this simple labyrinth, so this is a minor representation of the larger understated labyrinth.

Opportunities for August

As we traveled the globe in search of exploration and returned with an abundance of realizing the consecutive connectives of the world in June and July, we touched the mere surface of our planet through the eyes of the labyrinth.  In the month of August, we continue the explorative nature looking for what insight brings us to unite. It can be a  discovery of the united purpose that we connect with others, or in the way we bring who we are with what we can and want to do.  What August brings is a focus of how the labyrinth brings state of being united, within ourselves within the United States. Send along the labyrinths, programs, art, and offerings within the United States that you feel best represents this for daily postings.

  1. What Unites
Reach out and share the unique labyrinths in this month within the United States that serve to unite. We look for the unique design, interesting purpose, connected message, in the labyrinth or in the ways we share with others in message or program, art, design and education applied. Share your ideas, programs, purpose images and experiences at the 365 Experience on the TLS website providing some detail of why you design, share, create, build or simply walk, who benefits and how it helps us unite. Personal insight or National perspectives are welcome.
  2. What brings Insight
As we take each day of the 31 available in August exploring what brings us insight with our selves or as a nation through the paths of the Labyrinth.  This quarter focuses on the ways we apply the insight we gain and as we are united with our own insights, may we use them as well in a way that unites us personally and also purposefully with others as a nation united.
  3. Join the online  Mid Month Dialogues Call on Friday August 15th at NOON PST
Be curious, research and share what you know of unique United States labyrinths, the people, the programs, the designs, the resources or simply the desires in the first half of the month and apply something that you find unique to your own life walk. Join us on the Mid Month Dialogues to share what you discovered, ask questions and hear from others about what they explored and discovered. Be inspired with a greater appreciation of what unites us with more impactful insight that brings our labyrinth connection in line with greater perspective in our year of living honestly.   Call connection Information

An Unfolding Decade of Wisdom

Day 145: May 25
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Education
In The Month of: Celebration

The Lotus Labyrinth Design by Lynda TourloukisLast year I mentioned the idea of creating a birthday labyrinth and as I have created special labyrinths for organizations to community and for family and friends, I hadn’t yet designed a labyrinth specifically for birthdays or to signify a new year. For me this day signals a new year and a new decade as well. Walking on the decade of the past there was much in observance and celebration of the gains and losses and great appreciation for all. It had been a decade of laughter, play and great creativity and now the curiosity of what a new decade might offer left much in wonder. It is with the community of friends, family, acquaintances, supporters and collaborators that the sage in wisdom spoke to allowing what appeared and using what came naturally and simply.

In cleaning up paperwork and completing tasks, the Lotus Labyrinth I designed last year fell out of a folder and floated onto the table and as if by magic resurfacing to remind of the simple joys that went into creating it and its natural flow. At the time it seemed to have a purpose not yet realized, though its return and appearance today spoke volumes in the wisdom of what might lay in the decade ahead.

The lotus symbolizes purity, rebirth, awakening, spirituality and wisdom. An interesting finding is that there are five main colors of lotus from blue, white, purple, red and pink. In this design, pink is the actual predominant color displayed in the larger display of the art. The pink lotus is said to the true flower of the Buddha.  As this new birthday rises and new decade dawns, to be in association of these qualities and characteristics are a happy and humble message of the journey of the year ahead as well as the many years into the unknown. The unfolding of years is like the gifts in the blossoming petals that stretch out and find their fullness. Each being a unique and individual splendor, though importantly each representing a part of the whole floral experience.

Feeling the newness spread out in vast array and knowing it is all a gift to experience, celebrate and enjoy as we were designed with joy in mind in this wily and wonderful life.

On this 145th day…
Walk in celebration of your own birth today and be reminded of what showed up in representation. How does that still show up in today’s simple walk?

The Month of Celebration, Appreciation and Realization

May’s Focus: Celebration

Life is a celebration to explore in the next 31 days. With the idea of walking the labyrinth and its tri-focus on releasing, receiving and reflecting, let’s shift the perspective to one that walks in with appreciation, finds the honest realization from each day and walks out in celebration.  Observe what 31 days of this focus might reflect and how it elevates our life condition.

Four focus points to expand your celebration of this month’s experience:

  1. Share your ideas, in your personal experiences, how you share the labyrinth with others, art, design or method of construction or in other ways that it may be utilized. Let others know about this daily experience and opportunity by sharing it. Find us on this blog and on the Labyrinth Societies Facebook page
  2. Join our Mid Month Dialogues on May 15th at 2pm CST for a lively look at what you have created and will create in the idea of celebration. This month’s theme was a direct result of our last month’s Mid Month Dialogue!
  3. Participate in the daily opportunity of this educational focus of  your personal journey, how you lead, teach or share with others, and what you create for contribution or purpose with this theme.
  4. Remember that our theme is about finding our greater capacities, abilities and true realities in being honest with our potential. We focus on what we can do as it is inherently more useful and productive.

Humility in Design

Day 71: March 12
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Awareness
In The Month of: Discover

In creating a walkable path through the design of the overlapping structures that make up a Vesica Piscis, there were many illustrations of the curvature of lines, spirals and points of radius to consider. The elements of geometry come alive in the labyrinth and in observing the many components that showed up in this creation, it demonstrates the richness of what we are walking into. This design formerly presented a quandary when laid out in the diagram of ovals and circles on paper of the correct path to walk the elements.  Even in more permanent land designs the richness of its contents seemed to be missing in the walk.

The Vesica Pisces in simple form can be illustrated in partially overlapping two circles with the same radius to reveal an almond shaped gem which holds the secret of the two. It is often called the lens as a result. It is the first step in forming an equilateral triangle as the vertices of the overlapping circles creates two triangles at the top and bottom of the design.

Today’s creation was a walk of a different nature, appreciating the elements and components more significantly. The first design touched on every aspect, though the energy of the walk would be abrupt as its meander seemed destined to confuse. This design encouraged a gradual flow and a more unique appreciation and gives rise to the power of the polygon as it honors the root foundations of the intricate Flower of Life, Tree of Life, Square Roots, Harmonic Proportions, and sits welcome in the world of science and spirit with great respect. What began with curiosity became humility in artistry.

A suggestion to walk with:

On this 71st day…
Walk on the aspect of humility, where is it so great that only the truth shines.

March’s Focus

As it is now the third month of the year and our last month of growing awareness before we delve into the ways of education, allow this month be one that creates both the light hearted discovery and profound realization. How can you create more awareness with the labyrinth personally or in the ways you share with others? Where do you notice a spiral effect that takes you to the point or away from it? Be on the lookout for the spiraling nature this month.

  1. Realize
In the 31 Days this month offers, become aware of the daily realizations that you create and discover. Walking daily creates compound interest in what you look forward to and discover each day. Let March become your month of expanded capacity as you walk to make each day and adventure in exploration of what more you can explore. Seek to spiral into new and inspiring realization and whether it is rich and profound or light hearted and amusing… be open, walk with intention and you are bound to come away larger.

2. Surprise
One can realize and find much in the depth of understanding that awareness offers us, though when we look forward to realization of that depth and awareness, it can inspire new ways of appreciation and discovery in both our  process and capabilities as we are constantly growing, no matter what age. Invite the element of  surprise into what you realize as it can lift what you discover into seeing a bit more than before.  Notice the spiral effect of how you move from realize to surprise and make discovery more significant and true.
