December’s Walk

Image of people walking on the labyrinthIn the final month of this tumultuously changing year of 2019, we come to the final steps in the month of December. Learning more about the journey to the heart through the making of connections and building of communities in the variety that has been explored, the final focus is to contemplate the common ground.

What we walk upon in steps individually, can become the common ground underneath our feet and in our hearts. Discovering the journey to the heart in this month will be full of evidence from the ways it comes from our common threads.

Walk the weeks of December with these weekly suggestions to discover the nuances of common ground and its journey to your heart.

Use these suggestions to creatively enhance your experiences:

Week One: Consider the idea of what creates grounding and how experiences become better when we do.
How are we grounded by the labyrinth and how does it ground all who walk?

Offer the ways you ground, and what you suggest for others.

Week Two: How does the labyrinth become common ground during a walk? How does it become a place of unity for a community?

What do you add in your art, walks, programs, labyrinth designs to create common ground?

Week Three: What natural elements affect the point of coming to common ground with the labyrinth? How do individuals find a sense of natural or nature on the labyrinth? How does that create a journey to the heart? Why does it make a difference?

How do you encourage the natural elements to be a part of your personal or program experiences?

Week Four: When do you realize that a place of common ground has been reached? What do you do to honor this sacred space? In what ways does it offer a journey to the heart?

Tell us how you know that the journey to the heart has been reached. What do you do to honor this?

Thank you for taking the time to walk and express how the labyrinth makes a difference for yourself and others and how you make a difference with it. More will know and understand the subtleties of the labyrinth with the simple thoughts you add or the in-depth suggestions and instruction you provide. Walk each day or once a month. Whatever you December provides, find a sense of common ground and realize why it is significant to appreciating and understanding the labyrinth and a journey to the heart.

Creative Collaborations

Day 361  December 27
In The Year of Honest Living
In The Quarter of: Contribution
In The Month of: Honest Gifts

Segment Five: Skills
Days 359-364

Closer Connections

Image of Star Labyrinth for Segment 5 of Skills. To explore the skill of unity and collaboration, is to see the value of both sides of a situation, in order to see the greater value that exists in individuals as well as circumstances. Balance only shows us what is different and how both are necessary to equate the two. Harmony offers us the opportunity to bring the usefulness of each side into perspective, much like we might in a walk of the labyrinth, what we bring in helps us in one way to appreciate what we walk out with.

Developing this skill is one way to lighten our load, as when we learn to see value, we learn to connect with more purpose.  We can both give and receive with others and find its a way to develop ourselves in what, who and how we relate to. In collaboration we bring the divisions together for a true oneness.

Our experience during August offered a long walk across the United States to explore the ways that labyrinths brought people together in different states. Each day a labyrinth was super imposed on the shape of the state to create a unique individual state perspective with a collective purpose nationally.

The labyrinths explored in each state provided service to uniting the communities they existed in, offering a purposeful existence for each. They symbolized the simple ways to unite and in visiting 31 of them in the month, a labyrinth trail was created nationally.

Daily Insights of this 361st day…
Walk and consider the skills that have improved with collaboration this year. What gifts where realized?

The Unity in Unity

Day 243 August 31
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Application
In The Month of: States of Being United

Today we complete the many states of exploring our perspective of the ways we can be united in ourselves, with our abilities and in the ways the labyrinth offers. We’ve crossed the nation moving through a great many of our states and even creating a labyrinth of lines that for the first time have to step over a line we’ve crossed before on the map. It reminds us of the many lines we step over and beyond in order to find the honesty of our abilities and purpose. In a year that has had us questioning what our truth is, this experience has led us to discoveries and explorations of ourselves and our relationship with the labyrinth.

As we complete the coast to coast journey, we arrive in the northern and Easternmost state in our nation, Maine. There are a number of beautifully designed labyrinths for private individuals that take in the impressive coastal nature of Maine, and a variety of bed and breakfast, spa centers and botanical gardens that embrace the walk of the labyrinth as well.  The Labyrinth Guild of New England incorporates Maine’s labyrinths and unites the individuals and enthusiasts who are part of the curious circles of support and resource too. A graduate student did a remarkable job of exploring and uniting the passion and purpose of the labyrinth in a thesis report as well as became an instrumental part of the building of a labyrinth at the University of New England in Maine.

labyrinth image in the shape of the state of MaineAt the end of our walk, we can be impressed at finding so much that unites the interest in the labyrinth with the people who cultivate it in Maine. What better way to end the month and the theme than a walk in Unity. The Maine Organizational Farmers and Gardeners Association is a uniting of those who dwell with the land in form and function with education and advocacy for a growing community of the better ways to use our land for our people. This association, interestingly enough located in the town of Unity, Maine came together to build a labyrinth of perennials for the annual Farm and Homestead Day utilizing 800 square foot of land to build this three circuit labyrinth that will continue to bring life growing forward.

To end our month on a note of unity in Unity was intentional, though very much a gift of divine discovery on this last day of the month. It seems when we are focused intently, the way of the path appears.

While we did not travel in all fifty states of the USA, we traveled from Alaska to Maine in coast to coast exploration. While a few of our paths might seem to encourage a new step to stay on the path, the rest made for an interesting unity of one line of labyrinth walking.  Link to our United Path for August

Day Three… Finding Unity in the Community

We are playing… The 12 Days of Labyrinths Game
12DaysOfLabyrinthsPlay along in December, any 12 days or just make it last all month. Today’s post moves beyond the simple preparations into the action of the game itself. Read The Game and How to Play in the link below to follow along. Then send along comments of your experience.
The Game and How to Play
Preparations…12 Things that Matter
Preparations…12 Gifts, Talents or Abilities
Preparations…12 People of Influence
Day 1  l  Day 2

CPark_SignOn the third day of labyrinths, Charlie Frias Park was the location for the walk of the day. This interesting park, situated near the Red Rock Mountain recreation area, really used the natural elements well and in some uniquely creative ways.

The Park had two levels. The rock formations that surrounded the length of a six block area also contained parking, tennis courts and play areas. The center was the main focus of the park and almost a natural amphitheater that sported a long triple length field at sub level for a variety of sporting events.

They called this a maze, though it had only one entrance path. At one point in the design, it gave a choice of direction and by labyrinth standards, this could be classified as a contemporary style instead of a maze. The one choice just gave the walker an opportunity for a little diversion before completing the walk.

CFriaspark_PathsFrom the list of things that matter in this game, the idea of unity in the community has long been one of my themes in leadership. While in the past I have coordinated people with purpose and passion and brought things together that were meaningful and fitting. This past year I had some new opportunities to create some unique ideas for individuals that wanted to learn some new skills that uniquely fit their abilities. I loved designing specific programs to meet these requests and realized this was just another way to bring the unity of the myriad of abilities each of us has into the community of the individual and how they lived in work and play.

As I walked this labyrinth I was reminded of wanting to bring unity to the many diverse branches that make up my community. Simplify became a word I had been using in this diversely transitioning year as I knew the more I simplified and reduced, the more of what was really important and significant would show up.

CFriaspark_PathsLike this labyrinth, the outline or structure of it was set as the unity and the many ways I could walk it would be the community. If the directions I was taking didn’t fall into either category, it wasn’t necessary and just added complication. This labyrinth had a built in point of diversion, though the choice to take it was always mine. A good reminder that I can choose to keep it simple or stir things up a bit when needed.. it’s all part of my community of choices.

The person who playfully popped into my head was one delightful individual that I had the opportunity to assist in putting a workshop program together with. I created an outline and over months of time we chatted and filled in the pieces. We often side tracked with other conversation, relative though not germane. To build the many aspects of the workshop, we tossed out a community of ideas, and then over time unified them into simple concepts.

CFriaspark_GirlsLike this walk today, two girls happily came running into the labyrinth and raced around to the center. A young boy came with  a dog he hoped would walk the circuits unleashed and then a young mother with two children in tow talking constantly. Each had a different pace and purpose for being there, though all walking together with a common interest in mind building a unity in our community as we walked appreciating each others individuality.
