In the Paphos Archeological Park in the House of Theseus is the Mosaic of Theseus. The ruins of the house and buildings are scattered and bricks surround the edge of the labyrinth, though the mosaic tile is intact and at the center is the tell tale trial of Theseus and the Minotaur.  Originally built in the second half of the 2nd Century AD, the House of Theseus had 100 room and was believed to house the Roman Proconsul and served inhabitants until the 7th century AD. The Mosaic Labyrinth of Theseus was added in the 3rd century AD accompanied by two other mosaics that were added in the fourth and fifth centuries.

In this depiction, the path is made up of a chain to represent Ariadne’s thread allowing Theseus decent from the labyrinth to safety. In the center are the images of Theseus, Ariadne, the Minotaur and another character who is said to represent the labyrinth itself. The Roman design of quarters is incorporated with eight circular paths making its round Roman influence known on the Island of Cyprus. While it has had minor adjustments to its structure due to Earthquakes during the 4th century, it is relatively well preserved for its ancient status.

On this 188th day…

From the Ashes and Ruins

Day 186  July 5
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Application
In The Month of: Exploration & Return

In Pompeii in the House of Faun is the House of the labyrinth where a famous mosaic tile of roman labyrinth design resides. At its center is Theseus and the Minotaur

On the Eastern edge of Italy, North of the ankle of its boot resides the famous city of Pompeii near the bay of Naples. Mount Vesuvius has erupted over 50 times in this area and the one that makes it more well known is the eruption of 79AD where the city was completely covered in volcanic ash. Today Pompeii is home to many historic ruins and private homes that were excavated in the early 1830’s.

One of the homes is called The House of the Labyrinth. It contains 51 rooms and is filled with floor and wall mosaic designs, corinthian columns and the Greek Key designs to add to the focus of the name of this house, which can be found in room 20. A black and white mosaic floor tiling depicts a Roman style labyrinth design with the art at its center displaying Theseus’ battle with the Minotaur.  Adjacent to this protected room is area 16, known as the Peristyle. In it a large Roman Labyrinth natural hedge design is available for walking. It seems only fitting to share a Roman labyrinth design while in Italy and become aware of how we take in what we discover in expedition.

A Walking Gift in the Blue Labyrinth

Day 161:  June 10
In The Year of Living Honestly
In The Quarter of: Education
In The Month of: Exploration

The Katoomba Labyrinth of the Blue Mountains Photo Credits Katoomba Labyrinth Facebook Page

On the Edge of Australia in the Blue Mountains is a community garden that brings out the best in those who walk its artistic design. The labyrinth is situated within a historic landmark site in an area called New South Wales in the town of Katoomba. Its brick and mosaic design features a large mosaic in the center to symbolize our unity. The Katoomba region is in the area called the Blue Labyrinth, referring to the mountain range for its natural wonders, hiking and sacred respect.

Exploring this labyrinth, a true find was discovered in the video made by Lisa Gidlow Moriarty of Paths of Peace. Walk the labyrinth in peaceful steps as if you are there. Notice how the natural artistic design and your mind unwind in real time appreciation. This might be the exploration many might not make in this lifetime, though it is a true gift to be able to explore through the help of another’s giving nature. Enjoy your explorations.

On this 161st day…
Explore the gifts of your abilities that you give so easily to others, and the ones that you might like to share more of. Walk on the how and the why….
